My Bride and I will be celebrating our 50th this July. We’ve rented a nice cottage on Keuka Lake for the week. I asked my Son if he would perform the re-affirmation ceremony so......he went and got ordained as a minister.

He’s just too much like me to explain.
This is going to be fun.

Best wishes to you and the wife. We will be happily wed 40 years in April.
-
That’ll work.. :thumbup_smilie: :thumbup_smilie: :thumbup_smilie: :
Congratulations Bob.
We have another 16 1/2 years to wait for that...
-
Congrats RG, sounds like you have a special week planned to commemorate the occasion!
-
That we do! We haven’t taken any kind of vacation in a couple years. Should be. Lot of fun. Love Keuka Lake.
Thanks ,
Bob
-
Awesome Bob.
-
Congratulations on the milestone. Shoot for 75 now.
-
Congratulations
-
Congratulations to you both!!!! Sounds like a grand week is planned.
-
Congrats to you and your bride, that's one heck of a milestone. My bride and I will be doing the same in June 2022 if we are still alive.
-
Congratulations to you as well.

So, I’m gearing up to make our wedding rings for our anniversary. First attempt is in the works.
(https://i.postimg.cc/dDBD9WZD/1-ECD554-F-75-EA-46-DA-9-DD3-4-E3363-D5-E602.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/dDBD9WZD)
Phone kind of focused on my dust collection port and not the ring. Just received the wet sanding pads to take the finish to 12,000g. The test ring is a piece of Brazilian Ebony I had. Also picked up a couple blocks to play with. Bolivian Rosewood and Purple Heart.
Ultimately, mine will be of a piece of Gaboon Ebony I have stashed. My Bride’s is still undecided.
More to come.
Rg
-
Very nice rg. Can't wait to see what you finish up with.
-
Thanks. Just getting started, but I like where it’s going. I’ve always loved turning things on the lathe for my Bride. This is something very special.
Rg
-
rg , when in july ? My wife and celebrate 30 years this July 6th.. I definatly caught a keeper in her
-
Well I’m very pleased with the first attempt.. the
(https://i.postimg.cc/xJwLQD43/2758-C969-0680-48-E2-B1-B4-C08-EDC9-FE022.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/xJwLQD43)
It’s actually much more glossy than the picture depicts. Very wearable, comfortable and the finish is hard as nails. Next I’m going to order some gold wire and do an inlaid version. All I have to do is keep them hidden from my Bride. If I don’t screw up, it’ll be a great surprise for her.
Rg
-
That is so cool! Awesome craftsmanship!
-
Thanks. I’m just getting started. Helps to have most everything I need already and to have a bit of wood turning experience.
Bob
-
That’s awesome Bob....
-
Thanks Dom. I have more cores on the way to play with. Gonna make one for my Son’s.... uh....significant other....I guess. I’m holding off on the final wedding bands for my Bride and I. Want a bit more practice before investing in solid gold wire and such.
One of my more interesting and meaningful endeavors.
Bob
-
Did a copper wire inlay on this one as an experiment. I plan on purchasing 24k gold wire for our wedding bands. Pretty pricey to experiment with process, tooling, finishing or material. I’ll get that down first
(https://i.postimg.cc/Ff27YnYK/9083-C574-7361-4-EEF-9-A1-F-571-F1908-A3-A6.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Ff27YnYK)

The wood is Mopane, a South African hardwood. The wire was a bit testy to get in place, but it’s very fine wire. Actually it’s medium fly tying rib wire. The CA glue finish is pretty spectacular.
From the looks of the pics, I could use a manicure.
Rg
-
That looks phenomenal rg. That finish looks like a mirror polish
-
It’s pretty flawless. Can’t take credit for the process, but I can take credit for my results.
It’s killing me not to show my Bride what I’m doing. She’s my best critic. Not that she’s critical...more supportive than anything. But....this is a surprise project.
Rg
-
Dam, that's extremely nice looking.
-
Yeah, but I’ve got to find a way to keep my raggedy old fingers out of the pic.
Rg
-
Those are the hands of a working man. Nothing to be ashamed of there rg.
-
Not really ashamed, just think I could display a nice ring like that better. My Daughter has volunteered to help me set up an Etsy shop to sell some of the things I make. Since I retired from Lowe’s, it would be nice to have some side income to help support my hobbies.
We’ll see how that goes.
Rg
-
Nice job on the ring the final ones with gold inlay will be stunning. The Etsy shop will probably do well.
-
Picked up some gold craft wire to do a couple more test pieces. May skip the cores and just do a couple wood rings with inlays.
Rg
-
You think you need a manicure Bob? 8) And I washed them 3 times since I have been home.... ;D. I will be super glueing finger cracks in the morning...,, :P

Have gloves ever crossed your mind?
Bob
-
I do sometimes.. ::)
But they just get wet and the soil sticks to them or gets inside..
-
Did a ring for my sons girlfriend. Purple Heart.

Have a bit more tooling and cores coming this week. Tooling will improve the process and accuracy.
Rg
-
Looks great. Are the cores a metal backer or is it just a blank for you to turn the ring?
-
The cores come in different styles for different applications. The ones I’m using are flat exterior surface and smoothed and rounded inside
(https://i.postimg.cc/V0gV3FhP/5-ED14666-68-E0-40-DD-8-EB7-24-D8-EAB45-D7-E.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/V0gV3FhP)
The outside surface can be made from anything stable like exotics, Burl, acrylic...the materials list isn’t limited.
(https://i.postimg.cc/Z93ZX1xk/B6096-D94-0-A04-4-F66-89-D4-98-BB86088-A48.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Z93ZX1xk)
The cores come in stainless, titanium, ceramic and probably some other stuff like copper and brass. I’ve only made 3 of these and the results get way better each time.
Rg
-
Thanks. I’ll pass on the tranny fluid.
Rg
-
Thanks for the info rg. I think I need to dig out my grandfather's lathe and start messing around a bit.
-
You can get parts and materials from Craft supplies.com (aka, woodturnerscatalog.com) nice people. Fast shipping (you pay for shipping) there’s other suppliers but I’ve been dealing with them for a long time. Never disappointed.
It’s pretty fussy work to get the wooden exterior to fit the core properly. I tried making several specialty tools to no avail. Very hard to get a perfectly sized, perfectly straight inside surface on the wood blank by hand. So, I ordered a boring bar and cutters for my lathe.
Haven’t even made the wedding bands I set out to produce and I have several orders for bands. The finish will take some practice if you choose to use CA glue. I’m working on it.
Rg
-
Did another sample today out of Redheart.
(https://i.postimg.cc/qhq4LthM/2937-A34-E-FC50-4-C69-994-C-C95-EE19-C09-A9.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/qhq4LthM)
I’m waiting on a few more cores and a boring bar to make sizing through blanks to the core way easier and more accurate.
Turned out pretty nice anyway. I’ve got 4 months to get really good at this before I make our wedding rings.
Rg
-
I like it..👍
-
They’re getting better Dom.
Bob
-
Very nice rg.
-
Thanks, still in the tweaking process. One thing I’ve learned from 40 years of woodworking is, get the mechanics and process down and you can let your imagination take over.
Not quite there as yet.
Rg
-
Well I decided I had to tell my Bride about the rings. I couldn’t take a chance on it not fitting and 24k gold wire for the inlays is pretty expensive. Good thing I did, she wants a narrower band than I had planned on. She still won’t see the rings until the day arrives.
She loved the rings and the idea. And now I get to wear some of the bands I’ve already made.
It worked out well.
Rg
-
Always better to ask the boss for her approval of the finished product. Lol. Those rings are looking awesome rg. I'm sure you will have a ton of business from online sales to keep you busy.
-
They do look good.
-
Thanks. My Bride requested this one in the meantime.
(https://i.postimg.cc/XXKhgzXD/E371-A80-D-49-E4-458-B-8003-E3-B3-F8-E29-E1-D.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/XXKhgzXD)
It’s wider than she wants but I got a big hug, a kiss and a “you’re amazing”.
Priceless.

Beautiful craftsmanship. It's nice to see it still exists. I get so upset being in the construction industry that it's speed over quality. Or even pay... I do quality work because of my integrity not how much the job pays. You can have good or fast. You can't have both
-
Don’t let it get you down. Stick to your principals and keep improving. I’ve never really worried much about what others do. I have always taken pride in what I produce. Not for what others think, but for what I think.
A couple of those rings were finished, stripped and refinished a couple of times before I was happy with them. The one I made for my Bride today didn’t suit me so I stripped the wood band and started over again. I can’t settle for “pretty good”.
The ring with the copper wire inlay has a piece set in to fix a gap because I cut the wire too short. It’s about 1/16” long and took me 5 tries to get in place. My Son couldn’t find it even after I showed him where it was.
The person who makes an item is most likely the only one who knows or sees the defects. But, that’s all that counts. The biggest obstacle I have is my old eyes. I need lots of light and magnification.
Rg
-
I agree 100% rg. I hold myself to a super high standard. I mostly do residential framing but I want my cuts and fit up to trim quality or better. And I find hand nailing makes for a much more stable structure. Don't get me wrong, air or pneumatic nailers have a top place on trim work. But not in structural applications.
-
You never stop learning. Or improving.
-
You can’t finish out a badly framed structure.. just like finishing anything. It’s what’s underneath that counts.
Rg
-
You start out good. You end with good. If you start out with a mistake or bad decisions you chase them the whole way....
-
When you say good enough it's time to give it up and do something else.
-
How about the old “can’t see it from my house!”

My barber used to have a sign hanging in his shop that said: "We do three types of jobs here- good, fast, and cheap..you may choose any two. If it's fast and cheap, it won't be good. If it's good and cheap, it won't be fast. And if it's good and fast, it won't be cheap!"
I always loved that sign. When I used to work construction my motto that I told people was "I don't do s!#t work". I usually took a little longer than other people, but I never returned to fix a screw-up and that was where the real money advantage was also.
The rings all look amazing Rg! Great work
-
Yup! Do it once right and you make a lot more money.
Have to put together a little light box today to photograph some of my turnings. I need to get a portfolio together for sales.

Took a while to figure out the lighting, background and display.

Looks great rg. You're going to have more business than you can handle. Might even cut into your fishing time. Lol

Thanks. Just hoping to sell some to support the hobby.....habit.
If all I did was fish, it would be easy. But, I guess I’m not built that way. I kind of force myself to learn something new. The brain keeps the body alive.
Probably have to mow the lawn in a couple days. Now there’s some brain coma.
Rg
-
I actually enjoy mowing the lawn. I mow a touch over 2 acres. As far as learning something new. I'm right there with you on that. I have many irons in the fire as they say. Lol.
-
I really don’t mind mowing. I do our home and the one next door. It was a bit of a pain when I was working. This year I don’t think I’ll mind much at all.

Paperwork is on the way for our local farm/craft market. I’m going to test the waters there this summer and see how it goes.
Rg
-
They really look awesome Bob.
-
Thanks Mac. I’m getting better at it. I have another dozen cores coming this week to complete the samples.
I found a source for 24k dead soft solid gold wire for our actual wedding bands. Stuff is expensive so I want all the practice I can get before making our bands.
Rg
-
Very nice.... :thumbup_smilie:
-
Thanks Dom. Can’t wait for the first market day. My Son and his Girlfriend are really talented artists and are going to join me.
It’s a little intimidating at my age but not something I’ve never done. Lots of work to keep me busy.

38 days and counting down. We’ve chosen the attire for the ceremony. Hawaiian shirts, shorts and flip flops. Gotta find an extra small muumuu for my Bride to be.....again.

Well, today it’s our 50 th wedding anniversary. We’re stationed at a nice little cottage on Keuka Lake. Family will be here later for food, beverage and celebration.

Happy anniversary to you and your bride Bob.. Sounds like you picked the perfect location..
Sure hope all of you have a great weekend……

Congratulations Bob!! Enjoy your stay and each other’s company. That’s a beautiful lake that your staying on.

Congrats Bob and bride hope you have a wonderful celebration. Many more to both of you.
-
What a beautiful day it was. Surrounded by our small but close family. We re-affirmed our vows. My son presided over the occasion, having been ordained a minister by who knows what church.
We exchanged vows……again…..and re-affirmed our commitment to each other..
Not a Dry eye on the crowd or the participants.
Good food, great family, incredible bride……..I won the lottery 50 years ago.
I’m such a lucky person.

First congrats!
Secondly you have some interesting skills!
And thirdly your manicure comment reminds me of just before I got married my wife said some serious scrubbing and trimming was in order for our wedding photo close up of our hands. I was doing taxidermy then and with all the paint, borax, etc. my nails were a fright.

Should be casting a popper out there…😀
No fishing this trip. We wanted to just relax and spend every day together. I didn’t bring anything to fish with. I did look at some stuff here, but restrained myself and stuck to the plan.

They came out really nice Bob.
How did she like them?

She picked them from a dozen different samples I made. We both liked the lighter colored wood.
-
Nice, they look great.

I'm a little late to the party but belated congrats on the milestone. That's awesome, Bart

Thanks Bart. This is our last night at the cottage on Keuka. It’s been a wonderful time for my Bride and I. We’re watching some thunderstorms roll down the lake right now. Just saw lightning hit the lake near the East side. Glad they got the Camp Cory kids that were sailing off the lake.
