A thief struck in the night
« on: Jun 10, 2006, 09:36 AM »
Last night at my future- in -laws camp, a black bear came in and took off with our 2 foot long bird feeder in the middle of the night while we slept. I am heading out to go look for it now. I am bringing my friend Mr. .357 along just in case he thinks I may be food. Any one else ever run into this type of problem?

I found the feeder about 60 yards from the camp under some blowdown. Looks like the bear ate all the seed and he also took a suet block. I'll post picts of whats left of the feeder on Monday.

I have a coon that stops by nightly to knock down the peanut or suet feeders.  Saw him do it in broad daylight Memorial Day weekend.

While I was in Alaska my boss was out on vacation, and his wife adn 3 month old had stayed there, well she put out the garbage one night (onto the back porch in bear country  ::)   ) and as it turns out black bears like baby diapers.....   A lot.     Got a call on the intercom at her screaming about 3 am when she went to let the dogs out.     That black bear stood higher then the door, it was a biggee for sure.     Bears were a constant problem.      After that incident though I usually didnt wander far unless I had the .338 ultra-mag ( i think thats what it was) or the .280 with me.     Turns out the only other time I didnt was when I turned the corner and met the same black'ie about five feet away.
      They tipped over a b-b-q grill and got into just about anything else they felt like around the hatchery.

We had a black bear climb up the tree in front of my inlaws camp last year and took down the bird feeder, too.  He even took out the branch that it was on and clawed the side of the deck that was next too it. Needless to say that my inlaw grandmother didn't want to go back up last year after it had happened.  ;D It will quieter up there now, hehe.

I guess we'll see if it happens again this year.  :P

We were fishing on a fly-in lake in Canada - no access to grocery stores for 10 days.

On the second day, a bear broke into the food in the coolers.  Ham - gone.  Bacon - gone.  Jelly - gone.  Butter - mostly gone.  We did find some in the woods and along the beach.  We were desparate so needed to clean it up.  Even the Coke - the bear must have liked the taste because he bit into all the cans.

Basically, all we had left was dry stuff (pasta, bread) and lots of fish.  We usually have walleye for dinner every night on these trips, but having it for lunch every day too got old. :P

nice job, I had a bear climb up into my tree stand over night and rip my cushion out and pee bottle off the bottom of it.
No I wasn't in it.  ::)
It happened over night, when I went back the next morning, boy was I surprised.  :o

My future father in law was mad. The feeder is about 4 feet long and he just paid $35 for it.  ;D  I told him a  little duct tape and it will be as good as new.

Heh, why do people pay for tube feeders for finches?  Seed socks are next best thing to free!
