Title: Best (non chain) tackle shop
Post by: esox v on Jun 23, 2009, 09:19 PM
After reading the Gander thread... I was wondering what you guys think the best non chain store tackle shop is? In your area.. or that you have been to in our state.

Niagara Outdoors, Witmer road in North Tonawanda. Jeff (owner) is BEYOND knowledgeable on hunting and fishing. Great selection, if he doesn't have it he will get it.

When I'm out west, B & E Tackle just this side of Rochester, up here Hands down, Jimmy Dence's place All Season's Sports! When on Oneida I go to App's he filled the walls this summer, plus hand tieing thousands of jigs! Walls are full of jigs!

Cant think of any left. There is one upstairs in the Old Forge Hardwear Store, but it is expensive and mostly fly fishing stuff.
Other than an occasional marina that sells minnows and worms I really cant think of any.. :'( :'( :'(

I go to Fish307.com in Queensbury NY. It is near exit 20 of I-87. Jeff and the staff are very aware of what it takes to catch fish and fisherman.  8)

Hey Snagger, I was going to say B&E Tackle.
Next to the giant windmill on rt104 in Ontario, a few miles E of rochester.
Unlike the chains you can buy ice tackle throughout the ice season.
I have never been let down there.

Woody's gets my vote too. Always stop there when heading to Sandy Pond and Chaumont. Also a big fan of Thousand Islands Bait and Tackle.

Chock up a vote for fish307 in Queensbury. Good bunch of guys. Even better bunch of guys when they recognize your face as with most shops. A little loyalty goes a long way.

Nice guys, With the economy in shambles I am going to try to buy as much from non chain stores as I can. Even If it costs more. Local knowledge and service go along way and If it costs me more it's worth it.

Is that the place near Gunlocks?   Wow have not been there in years..  I will have to stop in the next time  I am in the area.

Fish307 in this area has my vote> They have a real good ice fishing lure assortment.  The best that I have seen yet.

You can't even consider the Dick's here a tackle shop.  The one in Madison caters to the bike riding sports playing crowd.  Their guns and fishing stuff are crammed upstairs out of the way as to not offend the liberals.  Phil and Son is the bait shot I frequent here.  Located inside an old Harley Dealer they have ample space for all their jigs, rods, reels, guns, ammo, etc.  They are also a drop off site for getting my tipups repaired or re-lubed.  I buy almost all my stuff their.

There arent any left in my little village outside of Buffalo. Used to be Dustys Bait and Tackle. And Outdoor Cabins. They are LONG gone. Gotta get closer to the water to have any success in the tackle shop biz.

Only tackle shops ive been in in the last couple years are Slippery Sinker in Olcott. And i also take a ride over the border to Fishin Niagara right on the river near the peace bridge, and if im feeling really adventurous, Petes up in St. Catherines. All great places, all great people inside

You are right on the money with that comment. I had a friend that worked at Dicks for 3 yrs and at one time they were thinking of getting rid of guns. At the same time they cut the amount of  space they were devoting to fishing and hunting and put more clothes in its spot.

i go to mickeys also,

I used to live 2 blocks from Mickeys.  That is a great shop. And the place to go in the Syracuse area.
Now I am prejudiced towards FISH307 because I spend so much time there.  (about 60 hrs a week)

I buy all my bucktail jigs from Mickey's. The guy does a great job on them. They usually have great live bait, too. Good guys to talk to. The "sonars" come from All Season Sports - only ones I will tie on!! Simplecarpieguy is right too - Oneida River Tackle has real nice bait!
