Title: Lake Ontario Browns
Post by: reeleyz on Mar 28, 2017, 05:26 PM
I figured it was time to get this started.

I hit the big lake today with my mom for our annual spring trip.

We ended up going 12/15 in the fog. It was a great day!!!

We had this visitor too. That was kind of neat.

Jeff and I won't be hitting the browns this year.
Wife and I are taking a very long cruise and leave week after next and not getting back until mid May.
So I decided to leave the Lund in storage this year until after we get back.
By then our place on Erie will be able to be opened and I'll simply go right to eye fishing instead.

Next year for the browns.
(Gives them time to grow more)
 ;D

Nice job Bruce.

Still have Red II, the Impact? I think I remember from last years post?

Oh yeah! I still have Red II but it is in storage, so Red I got the dip. Red I stays at camp all summer and Red II gets used on Oneida and Ontario normally.

I know you guys fish these browns in pretty shallow water. I have a connection out of catfish creek that i can get out with but only if hes available. My buddy and i were curious as to whether or not (on a calm day) we could take his 17ft bass boat and flatline stickbaits for these things? Iv been on the lake a bunch and know things can get wild out there so we would only go when the conditions were just right for us. But Iv got the place to stay just have never done it without riggers and boards.

You could definitely flat line them in shallow on a calm day. I caught them playing around with a spoon on 1 color of leadcore down the chute last year so even though the boat is supposed to scare them you can still get them without boards.

Like you said though, just watch the weather.
Title: Re: Lake Ontario Browns 2017
Post by: bigredfishing on Mar 30, 2017, 08:53 AM
All the browns we caught out there last year, we didn't take a single one on boards.   Almost all of our fish were caught flat lining gold stickbaits  100'-150' back trolled at 2.3-2.6mph at the transition line in 15 feet of water, although we did take a few on the leadcore setup like chowdaire mentioned.

this was our biggest last spring

We flatlined them for years. 2 rods with rapalas straight back 150' and have had some awesome days.

I have caught them 50' straight back behind the boat in 6' of water, midday on a sunny day with clear water. It doesn't seem like the boat affects them much.

The only reason I like big boards is because it is easier to run more lines and get them spread out.

Nice football BigRed!

Well you guys made that pretty easy on us. Im going to talk to him today and get in touch with my contact in catfish creek to keep an eye on the weather for me. I dont know enough about the weather out there to make the call so ill leave it to him to tell me when to come. Thanks for the input guys.

I don't know what other guys use but I always check the site below when I'm fishing the big lake. I have an 18' Lund right now but got into trouble once last spring sitting on a hot bite while a storm rolled in. I was sure thankful to get out of that one.

Just click on the zone you're heading to.

I also have a bass boat of sorts and this time of year I enjoy casting spoons or stick baits right up into 2 to 6 fow,  just like bass fishing only I catch nice browns. They seem to hang around boulders like small mouth bass. Try it you'll like it!

I'm hoping to get out for the shakedown Sunday, but it could be a game time decision. Fingers crossed she lays down Saturday night with the winds shifting to out of the south. I have a 16.5ft sea nymph, going out of Oswego, always tricky finding the right day to get out on the big lake with a small boat

Been there done that rlowery, in my 16 starcraft .
Still fishing out of it and is older than you, she is 38 yr. old.
Runs like she's a year old.
Fished out of it this year March 6 , Fair Haven bay .
My brother and I got 63 nice perch.
In Fl. now hope to be home before Easter.
 Good Luck  kill them.

Me and a friend used to do some epic trips in his 16' starcraft in long island sound.  You really learn the weather and how to be safe fishing like that.  Easy to take a large boat for granted.

As far as Ontario goes...I did a poor job maintaining my batteries on my boat so they must be replaced.  Driving to Jersey next weekend for the 8hp tohatsu...going to be a couple weeks before my boat gets out there.

I've fished  both the  sound  and Ontario .... I  am  more weary of Ontario bye far ....read somewhere the great lakes  have  more ship wreaks then  per capita  then anywhere  else ......after seeing  a   real north western wind  come  up I can see why, fish  safe  and  smart   get the weather  before you go out

Keep eyes open for debris boys.  Shoreline will likely be a minefield of logs and wood after these stream and river blowouts.

this  might  sound  stupid  but it it has  caused  at least on fatal boating accident in Oswego ... when  you  launch your  boat  and  hit  the  chord   into  your  GPS  remember there is a  BREAK WALL ....  as  you  get  to the  slot  and  head  out of the  harbor    hit that spot into  your  gps ...if  fog or  it  gets  dark  go to that spot  and  not  to the  launch  or  your  going to  hit the wall ...sounds  stupid  but it's  happened many times and  once  it was  fatal

Fished out of Oswego Saturday, bite was slooww. Went west all the way to mouth of Nine mile creek and back, only hit one fish but it was a very fat 10lb brown. Ran 6 lines, mix of sticks and spoon/ boards and riggers. Talked to a few guys that fished east out to the plant, similar reports. Hopefully it picks up

I was out there on Saturday too. Went East to the plant pulling 2 sticks and a spoon and nothing. Drove around to Mexico side and went 1/2. Both smallish cookie cutter size. Same for everyone I spoke to. Tough bite for sure.

I used to do a lot of trolling for browns out of Oswego. Looking back at my notes for this time of year, there is a feeder stream that comes into the Ford Shoals area. We used to stop trolling, anchor, and cast, right up tight to that stream. Did very well there. Not sure if it's the same 20 years later, but should be worth a try! If we trolled to much we would spook them out of those shallows.

You can go to "Lake Vision" and check out the camera image at Oswego for a real time look at the wave conditions. They also have a near shore forecast you can click on.

Cam has been frozen since 10/4  >:(

After seeing all those browns got me excited so this morning I grab up the rod and a small box of lures and hit the shoreline for some casting and managed 1 brown which I tossed back after a quick pic

Thanks KP!

Nicely done Fred. I was surprised that I didn't see anyone shore casting near Oswego.
