Hi All,
Brand new to this site, so if this topic has been covered before, please feel free to direct me there!
I'm involved in some fisheries research in the Arctic. We're looking for some equipment to do some depth/bathymetry work. We don't need to actually find fish, but we are going to use a fish finder for the work.
Our main priorities are:
- depth of ocean
- bottom terrain/topography/structure
The main challenge for us is that we're working in depths up to 1000-1,500 meters, so we need something that will go deep. I realzie we won't get any down or side imaging, and that's fine.
I'm pretty brand new to putting together a depth finding rig, so I want to make sure I have a good combination of stuff and am not missing any piece in the puzzle.
I've narrowed it down to 3 possible combos. If anyone has any advice, opinions, or suggestions, I am all ears!
Option 1:
Humminbird Helix 10 > XTH 9 DB 74 P transducer
Option 2:
Garmin GPSMAP 7608xsv > Airmar M265LH transducer
Option 3:
Simrad NSS9 evo2 > Simrad S5100 sonar module > Airmar R509LH-W transducer
The folks at Simrad suggested I use a sonar module in between the chartplotter and transducer to boost my signal. No one else (Humminbird or Garmin) recommended this, so not sure how necessary it is, or if maybe I should plan on that no matter what combo I go with.

I would 100% go with Simrad, their stuff is topnotch, same electronics used in multi-million dollar yachts, research vessels, etc.

I agree with Lance.
Especially in saltwater.

X3 on simrad.. also if trying to go cheap Garmin for fresh water..
