HOOKS for bluegills
« on: Jun 12, 2018, 01:05 PM »
will try and answer your P.M. here,so all can see.
i use a 14 aberdeen gold hook[open water] and smaller in [hardwater] if i can not get the
14's or smaller i will adjust 12 aberdeen hook to a smaller size with with my loop pliers[photo  next]
the pliers have different sizes [ 3.5 mm,,2 mm , 1.2 mm ]
gills have a very small mouth [study in 1999 show that 6in gill has about a mouth gape of 10 to 11 m.m.
but does get bigger as the fish gets bigger
WHAT  i want is a hook with bait to fit into that mouth, gills inhale bait most times.
 ;D ;D ;D

That will catch a lot of gills no doubt. once it gets hot in the summer, I catch my biggest gills while searching for crappie with this combo

It really helps sort through the small ones when they get aggressive

I believe you do need a license, if your handling the gear and transporting fish. https://www.maine.gov/ifw/fishing-boating/fishing/laws-rules/license-requirements.html

As for the gills, they are an invasive species here, not all waters have them but they are getting around. If you get into them, take all that you want, there’s no limits for panfish here and not many people actually fish for them. On that note, if you do come and keep any fish, make sure you’re killing them immediately. It’s illegal to keep them alive on a stringer or in a bucket, and transporting live fish (except legal bait) is illegal as well.
I’ve also just noticed I’ve been post in a lot of NY threads since I started check all unread posts instead of just staying in the Maine board. It seems my state has been kinda quiet this season...
