Pike Spawning Colors
« on: May 11, 2006, 05:29 AM »
There is a picture in the pictures section of a bowfin in spawning colors.  The fins are green as well as the lips and tongue.  Do pike change like this?  My buddy caught a pike at the end of ice fishing this year that had green lips.  I've never seen that before.

From what I have heard it's nothing to do with spawning .
It is supposed to do with the seasonal changes in water clarity, water temp , and more vegitation .
Dont know for sure but this is what I have found in books and magazines .

im with 1tigger on this one....i dont think they get anymore vivid depending on year..its the lake and forage base that ive noticed...a lake stocked with splake with alot of sand by my house produces large..dull pike...right across the road is a heavily vegitated and has a dark marl bottom..the pike are super dark green with big white spots and red fins..about the green lips..what color are the pikes you catch normally?

Only thing I know is they lose some teeth over the summer, I would think nature allows different solor patterns in certain species.
Mutations in certain bodies of water?
Don't know bud? They all fight about the same!
Internet heros give it a rest!

A pike's body color variation like others have said is more to do with there habitat than the time of year. In a sandy area the pike will be very lite colored and in a weedy environment they are deeper greens and richer yellow spots. I believe they can very there coloration a bit if they move to a different type of bottom but it takes time.

All of the pike we caught from this lake had dark green markings.  The one with the blue/green lips looked exactly the same except for his lips and fins.  Maybe someone dropped a magic marker in the water and the stupid thing ate it ;D

Look at any fish that is traditionally a darker color and this will happen to all of them !
The darker the water and amount of vegitation will dictate how dark the fish will be .
It's nature at it finest and the good lords way of camoflaging the fish .
