Title: tent or camper?
Post by: billditrite on May 06, 2005, 04:36 AM
for many years i was a tent guy and love to cam till just a few years ago my wife suggested we look into buying a camper . bought a little 8' starcraft pop-up and totally love it. it takes me no longer to set up than a tent would. it tows very easy i tow it with my wifes lumina.it is nice to be able to stand up and if its rainy the kids can come in and watch TV....while dads fishing

That's quite the set-up, Scott. Can the whole family sleep in it?
I have a 4 person tent, but my GF and I are the only ones ever sleeping in it because we bring so much stuff and fill it up.
Tents do bite when it's raining, but that's all part of it.

as long as the weather isn't like it is at our last camp out i can stand sleeping in a tent. i like the pop ups with the luxury of home but i like sleeping in my tent in the summer and enjoying the weather. my fiance just got me a got a great little tent off of ebay that was dirt cheap compared to want gander mountain wanted for it. it is a two person bivy tent that weighs 3 lbs. and sets up in about 2-3 minutes. we ordered it and it was at my house in 2 days, great little company. i had to return the one after i burnt that hole in it with the mr. heater.

I am more of a tent guy for several reasons. First obviously i am 19 and can't afford a camper but i have used them and there is no doubt the are like a 5 star hotel compared to a tent but they are not very portable. A lot of my camping is done at secret fishing holes or high up lakes that i have to hike to so a lightweight tent is my only option. A tent is plenty comfortable for me especially if the fishing or hunting is hot but once again i am only 19, maybe when i am a 50 year old trout bum with a bad back and hip i will want one of those campers :D

camping is as individual as fishing itself. we all do it a little different and thats why this forum is a great idea

I would make a comment, but I've been warned.  ;)

True camping to me will always be a tent. I plan on getting a smaller, one-person type tent this summer for hiking adventures. Something lightweight that won't break my back...

I've been camping for about 40 years. Started out in a tent as a boy. One of the  first things the wife and I bought when we hitched was a 9x12 tent from Sears. That thing lasted for years. Moved up to a pop-up, then a tag-along, then a slide-in. I got tired of wrestling with them and now we are back to a small tent and we love it.

I keep the camping gear ready to go, all we have to pack is food and clothing and can be ready in less than an hour. We can put everything in the boat and get away from the crowds. A small tarp and good rain gear are essential for those rainy days.

I was a tent camper through and through until the birth of my twins.  Had to buy a camper - makes things much easier.  Maybe someday I will be able to revert to my former self.

when its just me hiking into my favorite brookie ponds or hunting camp I use a 12x12 tarp... maybe 2 of them
when my wife and kids go we have a nice 8 person tent

tenter all the way, i hate camping and people in their trailers wathing tv, camping for me and the kids is enjoying nature, not bringing home necessities with you, although wife wants a camper, oh well a air mattress makes it a bit more comfy for the women. Id recommend a decent tent, preferrably a eureka, they cost a bit more, but will keep ya dry(ebay is a good way to get a bargin on them, as someone posted earlier). Dicks has them on clearence alot. The sunrise is a great tent. no matter what ya buy make sure you seam seal them, no matter what the salesman tells ya no tent is waterproof out of the box. good luck camping

at my age its hard to stay up past 9, especially when you get up at 0400am everyday.i understand what you are saying. when we are going to stay there longer than 2 days . the wife makes me get a cabin just because of the critters and the bears.

I have to say the ASP is a great place to fish and camp.
I was impressed and will be back there soon.
Where are the tent sites located?
Title: Re: tent or camper?
Post by: bw9fish on Jun 14, 2005, 10:47 AM
You guys are funny! It sure makes the day go by faster!

There are tent sites in Quaker- Cain Hollow and a few at the Deihl area by the store which are not too bad.
Red House are right along ASP1 across from the store.

I prefer Quaker area because I always get to see bears.

cain hollow on the quaker side i do beleave.

yes cain hollow right near the lake i believe its less than a mile from quaker lake. i have never stayed in the tents in quaker i have in red house and its a mad house there. i was told by workers there that if you just take a hike off the beaten path that no one will bother you if you wanna camp and have a small fire. quaker does have a good bear population but i find you see more in red house acroos from the tent siter behind the store also where you come off the 86 exit into red house on in and summit area has some good siting but ive seen the most spotting way up ASP2 up at the top of the hill but my all time favorite is scaring the crap out my kids in the bear caves in quaker lol doesnt work on the older 2 anymore but i got a 2 year old thatll get it in a while

Title: Re: tent or camper?

Tents sure do have the advantage in my oppinion.   With campers you are stuck in roadside camping sites.    With a tent you can get a light one adn just start hiking.    I camped 3 miles back in the wilderness in alaska and there is no way a camper could have gotten back there.    Although stuffing three guys into a 2 person tent in the middle of bear country is sort of borderline baiting them in rather than a sleeping area.
Tenting seems to test your skills a bit more too, you have to choose what you pack wisely if you are going to hike in a ways.... say the right fuel for your little camp stove (learned that lesson the hard way up there)
In stead of being able to pack everything you have to make choices wisely adn eliminate things that you really dont need but still want.
I like camping and Im not saying that campers are all bad.     I bet I'd sure wish I had an AC'd camper if I was tent camping it in 95+ temperatures.     Campers can offer a lot more luxuries but tent camping seems to me to be more fun and challenging.

I still tent it at 41 yrs old when I hike up the mountains for some goat hunting or fishing some back country lake. The only way you could get a camper in there would be to fly it in. I also have a camper that I like to take if 4X4 access and I'm hunting moose or bear. I stay away from other campers especially in the provincial campgrounds. Brother in law loves the social aspect of camping. I hate that part and if I see another camper swing in and ask if they can camp next to the creek or river I'm at, I usually talk real loud, scratch my privates, pick my nose, take out  my eye and lick it, while making loud humming noises...They get the picture real quick. But I haven't had to do that in quite a few years. Most of the places I go are 4X4 access and very limited access. I camp for the solitute of it all, and if the going gets real rough, I pull out the tent and continue. Lots of times it is just a tarp especially if I'm after grizzly, then I'm moving and searching lots.

If there's a security guard driving around...telling you to go to bed at 1 am...that's not camping...if in a tent or camper.  I like my tent (with an air mattress)...but it does suck when it rains hard.

I prefer to tent camp, have several tents (wife works at LL Beans).  I bivy camp and have lightweight backpacking tents and large dome and cabin tents.  I usually take one of my inexpensive modified A-frame tents, lightweight inflatable air mattresses and hit the trail.  Have a 21' Hi-Lo a friend "gave" me and will use that for hunting in the fall.  It's nice to come back to a dry warm environment after a long day in cold weather.  Let the clothes dry and cook a hot meal.  Spent two weekends this spring in northern Maine scouting and slept out both times under the stars listening to "yotes".  I guess I've always been a tent guy.  I usually hit the woods for solitude and quiet....

I have always been a tent guy.  i've had a LL Bean 6 man tent for years and i have never had a problem with no rain.  Boy that thing could tell some stories!  Love the portability to go to some very remote places.  Gets a little hairy when you have a couple of bull moose fighting outside 15 feet away.

I camp in my pop-up camper, nice cause its like tenting but with something more comfortable on your back. I do have a tent and use that when I am towing the boat to go with us! Best part of camping is the food/cooking!! I can spend all day doing that, with a beverage in hand! Thats relaxin!! No TV No Phone...

I always tent camp, but I would like to get a slide in. I have an Ex-Cab long box GMC, with overload springs and holes drilled for tie downs. It was obviously set up for a camper, so why not? I figure this will allow me to keep the wife and kids from bawling about the tent, and still pull the boat. Shoot, what is the purpose of camping if you aren't gonna fish! ;D

5th wheel camper! I have a 22' 5th wheel prowler that I tow with my F-150. That way I can still tow my boat behind it. I tented when I was younger and then I bought a 12' tent trailer but after 2 seasons with it I was sick of popping it up and down so I got the 5th wheel....best investment ever! And im only 22 years old so anyone can get into the sport...if they save their money. Tenting in the rain and cold is never any fun.

I remember one night last June when we had a bad thunder storm and the tents were all collapsed and coolers and what ever else was heavy enough set on top of them. I watched out the window of my fifth wheel as all the tent campers sat in their vehicles all night. In the morning I had a cup of coffee and went fishing while they were trying to repair the tents. A few had to be brought down from the tree where they ended up. A camper tipped over two spots down from me. Yup, tents are great, but I'll stick to my fifth wheel. I still own four tents and they get used once in a great while.

I fish a river with Islands and its rather hard to set up a camper on a island.I like campers but the tent is more mobile for me.
I ember fishing the river and  camping out the it rained a lot the river was rising and overtaking the small island we were on. we were prepared for the rain and stayed to the last moment. Good fishing and being with Friend's that's what its about. We got a little wet but I would not change a thing. The memories of surviving the elemants will stay with me forever. And I look forward to the next time.Besides I'd rather be on the water fishing rather in a camper.

I didn't read this whole topic yet,at least not right now,as I have limited time to post, but I am posting so that I can follow this one. It's been pretty good from what I've read so far.

Nice topic Billditrite!:D

I have used tents & campers, but my family & I like the mobility of tents. We still have our P/Up camper, it's been all over the midwest & to the east coast & back, but the tents seem to get used more. At least in late spring /summer /early fall.
But, It sure is nice to have the camper on the truck when deer hunting and it's cold out...
;)
Not to mention some of those early spring Trout fishing adventures, or Spring Fishing opener....
;)
oh,   & I forgot waterfowling...
;)
You get my point...

I like a tent, we have a nice two room tent. We used to have a popup but I must confess I did like it alot, still dont know why I sold the ole rockwood but I did. The popup is basically like a tent but a few more options, alot dryer, and easy to set up. Maybe someday I will get another popup. Probably not to soon as no job = no money.

We had a camper for 15 years and after the kids got older I sold it and went back to a tent. It's just less space to store when not in use, which got to be 364 days a year as the kids grew out of camping and into boyfriends and girlfriends.  If the weathers bad I sleep in the Expedition. If the weathers decent I usually sleep in a lean to or small tent out on a beach along the Missouri River.

I have a 32' fifth wheel with double slides. It's just about right since most of the time there are five of us and two dogs when we use it. When my brother pulls in next to me with his 41' diesel pusher I kind of feel like I'm from the wrong side of the tracks until I think of how much less I spent for my rig. Around here most camping is done in a campground with electricity , showers and stuff. If I want to rough it, I still have four tents and my brother has a slide in pickup camper for when it's just the two of us.

I got a 18' Mallard from a friends parents last year.  Now that I got this the wife doesnt mind camping so much.  We started with the tent then a pop up, now with this she started asking a month ago when we where going to get out and start camping this year.  I guess I did the right thing getting it.  Even the kids enjoy using it better than the pop up.  I guess cause it has a bathroom w/shower.

Bought a Pop-Up camper in 1971 and used it until two years ago, when I gave it to my son (he's been bugging me for it for years and he's got five girls, so, what the H####).  Went out then and bought a complete tent camping set up and had fun with it for two years, but yesterday I saw an ad for a really nice older pop-up by Coleman which the owner had not used for 15 years.  New guy bought it and "pimped it out " with Microwave, Flat ScreenTV, full electrical and water hookups and much more, but had to sell it (divorce).  Bought it today !!!  Can't wait to get back "On The RoadAgain".

Anybody know where to get a small, thru the wall furnace for Winter camping??

Started out with a quilt strung between 2 trees. That was 45 years ago. Used tents till I hit 40. My back cant take it anymore. Air mattress may help. Bought a Viking pop up and my wife loved it.  Sold it and went to a 22 foot Layton hardside and we both liked it. When gas prices went nuts we went back to popup. Got a Jayco. I suppose we will use it till I tip over. Does everything we need of it. Warm and dry. I still have a cap on my pickup and sleep in it on early spring trout fishing trips.  Steve

I love tenting and have not gone in over 3 years due to the birth of my daughter.  I really miss it.  I do have a cap on the back of my truck and used it as an area to sleep during hunting season.  I need to get a camping pad if I continue to do that.

I use to do the pickup thing but I made a fram over one wheel well and used a single mattress on it.  Had my other equipment on the other side.  In your case if theres more than one going you might consider an inflated mattress that will fit between the wheel wells.
