You Never Know What You’ll See On The Canal
« on: Sep 01, 2020, 10:34 AM »
Fishing the canal near Fairport this morning when this thing came motoring down the canal.

They pulled up near me and asked “Where’s the nearest boat launch?”
Something you don’t  see every day. An old amphibious car.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

That’s awesome!

Years ago I saw one on lake Winni in NH, and the car was in d**n near perfect condition. The owner fortified his passengers who let out an crazy scream ad they dunked in which caught my attention, lol.

Any idea what kind of car they are?

Research says they’re called “Amphicar”. The first mass produced amphibious car. I’ve seen a couple in the past that were perfect. I remember one on I-Bay...Red and looked to be brand new.

This one looked to be in the total restoration or total neglect phase.

Either way, still pretty cool.

I owned a Karman Ghia back in the 60’s. Never knew it would float.

A long, long time ago, my grandparents had a cottage just North of Long point on Conesus Lake. Our neighbor's had friends across the lake that had one of those Amphicars and would run across the lake to our cottage and drive up the beach. It was their short cut to Geneseo.

Tha best part was the fact they also had two Seadoos. Some of the first out. What a thrill for a 12 year old like me to drive when they would visit.

Brings back memories. When I was a teenager my family had a camp on Saratoga Lake and every night this car and I would fish the same area for walleye. We fished close to each other several times a week  and the guy would keep his net right on top of the car and reach up and grab it when necessary. We'd have fun together, me in my 12 foot aluminum and him in his red car.  We often fished after dark and he'd shine his bright lights on me kiddingly and honk his horn, really weird seeing a car coming at you over 25 feet of water.  Good times. And we caught a ton a walleye back then.

I live very close to both Erie and Champlain canals and it is fun to watch. Most interesting boat I saw was the actual "Bounty" from the movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" with Marlon Brando.  They were bringing it somewhere for restoration.

I have been back and forth to Seattle the past 6 years to visit my son and they had a “ ride the bus” tour. They are left over amphibious landing craft converted into buses. Unfortunately, there was an accident last year and a number of people were killed and injured. The company is now bankrupt and selling the buses off.  We can all buy one and save the cost of a boat trailer :D
