While fishing yersterday at a small local lake, my buddy caught a 4 lb cat on a night crawler. I caught one on a shiner.

I only fish channel cats.My bait of choice is bullfrogs. If frog season is closed I switch to cutbait.

I mostly fish for channels and have my best luck with chicken livers or fresh cut bait such as bluegills or shad. I used to catch a lot of them on Sonny's Super Sticky stinkbait. I recently moved near a couple of rivers that hold a lot of flatheads so I think I'll be using some live bluegills for them at night.

Hi all,

Have any of you tried artificial baits like the Gulp Alive regular Gulp, Berkley powerbait, Yum LPT or mr. twister Exude?

For real bait how about frozen smelt or mackerel for cats?
Would it be better to cut them up or use them whole?

Have any of you had any luck with any of these bait for channel cats or black and brown bullhead?  ???

actually, this is something i have been curious about for years. there is so much goop out on the market for catfish bait. i have been trying differant baits bought at walmart or likewise places and up until this year could not figure the stuff out or if it even worked. well this year proved any doupts wrong!!i have been killing the channel cats on bagged shad , gulp, dough balls etc.. and the stuff is increadable.the bait works rather well and comes in handy when i don:t have fresh bait. now i always have a package of the catfish baits from the store.i never thought it worked but proved myself wrong so i give it a  :thumbup_smilie:

sm. glow pimple w/ a 6in. dropper,sz.4 hook tipped w/ a small minnow or sucker w/ the tail clipped off. the bait moves the pimple around which attracts them from a distance. works great on cusk in the winter too! charge the pimple every half hour or so.
