What kind of catfish is this???
« on: May 15, 2008, 11:03 PM »
I caught this catfish tonight on a breadball fishing for carp and it is definitely not like the brown and yellow bullheads I have caught before. I am thinking it is a channel cat but I have never seen one before except in pictures. Any one have any ideas?

I just got an email back from a biologist and he told me that this is a white catfish. This is the firs time I have ever caught one of these fish.

Definitely a white.  Identified by the white chin barbels.

Do you live somewhere on the east coast? I have always heard that there are white catfish along the Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico. bear

When I poasted this I did`nt see the barbel sticking up out of the nostril area. ???
In our waters around here we have the bull head species and the channel cat.
The smaller channel cats have the spots like a brookie and the larger ones seem to outgrow the spots which I had always thought were the mudcats but was informed by a F.W. and parks biologist that We do`nt have mudcats in this area. ;D
Thanks for posting this so`s I could get a bit of an education in catfish. :w00t: :whistling:

Yeah I live on the east coast, more specifically, Lowell Massachusetts. This was caught in a river called the Concord river, a part of the Merrimac river watershed. I guess catching one of these fish is a big deal but I have caught 3 at this one spot while fishing for carp. I guess I found the White catfish honey hole

Fish the Connecticut River.  They're all over in there.  Most people think they're catching small channels, when in reality they're whites.
