I don't fish there so it means nothing to me, but I just read an article from april of this year titled " thousands of perch found floating dead in lake Michigan "

That was terrible journalism

Local CBS in Chicago found a picture on a forum or on facebook, and ran with it. Then Field and Stream picked it up and just rehashed (not bothering to even interview anybody) and then Fox picked up Field and Stream's article and rehashed it, again not bothering to interview anybody.

No dead fish were ever found by 4 separate people that went looking, including Dale Bowman of the Sun Times, and Illinois DNR. There were numerous "perch boils" or "perch upwellings" of LIVE perch this winter and early spring in the slips. Huge aggregations of LIVE perch would boil up to the surface. If you took a picture of it, they look dead. But the videos that were taken clearly show they are alive.

Thanks MC.  It's always to great to get the correct information!!!  Another example of: "if it's on the internet, it must be true!"

Was this the article that ran at the same time of the leak at Portage?

Do not want to hijack this but any more info on the leak? I assume the fish are ok to eat as far away as Chicago area (Cal Park/96th Street) to Michigan City?

The article came out the same time frame as the leak, but the leak happened 10 days or so after the perch "kill" was reported

Also the leak was 20 miles away, was downcurrent and downwind of the 87th st slip, and there was no fish kill associated with the leak

the latest info from EPA is that the chemical was below detection frequency in Lake Michigan, which is a good thing. Long-term monitoring is in place
