This spot used to have no signs except one saying "please do not litter." Looks like a few careless a--holes ruined it for everyone. >:(

Lots of reasons for such an occurence lets not assume fishermen got the access closed.
-
i'd call the owner ...........funny the sign isn't signed
-
and by law it doesn't have to be sign
-
I'm not sure that access point can be closed off. First off, the road (State Route 9L) is owned by NYS, so there is a right of way on both sides and they can't stop you from parking there. Second, the land to south of 9L and west of Harris Bay Yacht is NYs Land, can't stop you from parking there. Lastly, according to the tax map the lake (again NYS property) butts up against 9L on the north side for about 50 feet between the yacht club property on both sides, so that should be a legal access point. I will try to have an ECO look into it.

At least one sign shall be posted on each side of the protected area and on each side of each corner of the protected area, provided the corner can be reasonably ascertained. we had a something like this happen on big bay a few locale home owners tried saying the access was their property when in fact it was the towns drain pipe for the road ....you might want to check this one out boys
-
Happens down at the shore a LOT. See a lot of illegal fences accross easements.
-
Anyone can walk into a store and buy a Posted sign...h2l
-
my friend went out to cut wood and someone posted half his woods!!!! crazy
-
you do know you can just bring up the tax map for that area on a computer and see if anyone owns it .....if it's state land why not contact your local legislator and try to get a official easement on it ......

Awesome, thanks Capt JJ.

Just take the signs down, go fishing and see what happens. Perhaps you'll get to confront the individual responsible for the signs.
Then you can call an ECO and make them prove they have the right to post. What have you got to lose....a $25 ticket?

I've taken this approach and paid a bit more than 25 bucks to get a criminal tresspass charge dropped....add a 1000 to that number. Mega pita. I'd still do it again but anyone who considers doing so should be aware it can be painful.
Easier to show up before sunrise and go fish.
-
it's easier and cheaper to google a tax map or go to the town hall and see who actually owns it ......
I wouldn't be pulling those signs down not only are you trespassing ,but that's destruction of private property and a black eye for all hunters and fisherman ...take a minute ,do it right and check who owns it
-
Agree. Any Tax Assesors office will send them to you. Keep them on you and show the authorities or anyone really, as needed. I will say though sometimes even that doesn't work. Depends on which officers answer the call.
-
Some counties even have tax maps online (I know Hamilton county does). Then you take the tax id and search the tax rolls to find the owner and his/her mailing address
-
onXHunt app for your smartphone. has all the information and land owner name and mailing address (from the tax rolls) I use it all the time to see who owns lands adjacent to where I hunt trap and fish.......

As far as I can tell the area belongs to Harris Bay Yacht Club?

Yep...tackle wrappers, worm cups, cigarette butts, etc. I used to pick that stuff up on my way out every time I was there. One time though someone even dumped a huge pile of steaks and fillets and various other meats in the grass there. Stunk for a solid month. >:(
I guess I will be contacting HBYC to see if I can work something out personally. I have been hand launching my canoe there for years. It was great being able to set out at 3AM or literally whenever you want on the hottest fishing bay on the lake.
Will really be interesting when hard water season arrives and people want to access Harris. Think that's when people will really start to get upset about this.
-
well I always say if you step over garbage your as guilty as the people that threw it there in the first place ,and this is why ,you see trash pick it up,if you don't start looking for new access because the one your using soon will be posted .............
bye the way, i see taking the signs down going fishing and seeing what happens was the wrong answer :rotflol:
-
That's a shame Neil. Hopefully you can work something out.
-
neil most times when I have knocked on a door and shown respect I was given permission ,sorry you have to go threw that because of pigs
-
Same old story🤢,the few slobs ruin it for the rest of us,I bring big trash bags with me fishing and hunting and I can't keep up...oh well, you can't fix stupid!!!
-
Sorry to hear Neil
Some People just don’t care what problems they cause for others but will complain when accesses get shut down 🤬
