May Results

May was true to form....not the fastest action, sort of stuck in between seasons, but also good for the variety pack. 8)

I started out with some deep wading for splake.  Not as action-packed as the fall, but the rewards were there.

While the big browns have continued to lag for me, I did get a few decent ones early in the month.

In my book, the hatches for the month were pretty weak.  :P  It might be a result of our overall cool evenings.  Still, a few fish would "look up" and take a surface presentation.  Often, an emerger like a Griffith Gnat or Partridge & Green used as a trailer behind an EHC or Parachute Adams is what drew the strikes.

The highlight of the month came during the third week.  I was surprised to find a pod of very nice brookies in pretty small water that hadn't been producing well at all.  I was able to sneak up on a holding fish and snap a quick pic before going to work with the 5-weight.  I ended up just short of double digits on the fish count, with 5 over 16".  It was one of those outings with a high shock  factor that I won't forget any time soon.

In between trout trips and especially at the end of the month, warm water fish became more prevalent.  I caught some decent smallies, largemouths, and other species that gave the 5-weight a continued workout.  Some even in scenic small water.

And I always enjoy getting a few pics on my outings that aren't of fish  ;D

Wow, impressive month of May for you Jim.  That's really a cool picture of the brookie in the shallow water.  I've yet to toss a dry fly this year I'm thinking it's about time now that it's june. i've been seeing flying ants, a few grasshoppers (still early for those), lots of mayflies, surprisingly not a lot of caddis though (yet).

Thanks for the nice comments.

That's the first time that I've ever gotten a pic of large brookie holding in the current like that.
