South Shore Trip Tomorrow help (Open Seat)
« on: Aug 05, 2018, 09:30 AM »
My father and I are heading to the South Shore (somewhere from the RI to the Cape) tomorrow for a day on the water with our 18' boat. Thou, I have fished down that way many times, this time of year I would be fishing off the North Shore normally, but Dad at 73 can't reel up many cod and haddock before he is done... He also likes to catch fish he wants to eat (no Blue Fish for him). So, I think SeaBass, Fluke, Scup are the way to go as his hands will hold up much longer bottom fishing, rather than casting. I was hoping for some intel on what is happening down that way... Thanks in advance!
Just had a friend bail, so I have an open seat, let me know if interested...

Went out of Galilee and had a blast, not as many keepers as I would have liked, but the action was none stop (my father has little patient) with dinner plate scup, Seabass (Dad is the searobin king...)and a number of 18.5-inch fluke (grrrr). Plenty of fillets to go around!

Deerhunter, I will be taking you up on that offer, thanks...

You ever keep any of the sea robin?  The bigger ones have decent sized fillets like a scup and are actually very tasty.  I had never tried them until a friend introduced me to it this year.

Another great fish for the smoker. I actually do not fillet them but instead cut around the head and pull the skin off. then with pliers i remove the top and bottom spines and finish by removing the guts and head. The meat comes off the bones very easily. Try marinating them in some Worcestershire combo sauce and grilling as well. I also just recently tried smooth dog fish and made it during a party. People were raving about it and I actually enjoyed it myself. VERY light and easy to eat. The trick was marinating the fillets in lemon juice for 24 hours.

Not sure if you can see how the sea robins are cleaned in this picture.

Here is the marinating dogfish
