Title: Kodiak Commando's A.K. adventures, check for updates.( big male coho)
Post by: Kodiak Commando on Apr 10, 2005, 09:10 PM
My favorite topic on this forum is TFB's trout of fame and now that big red is doing something similar i dedided it would be fun to have a chronicle of my fishing year. It may start out slow (At least compared to TFB and big reds topics) but once the summer turns around expect lots of updates, probably at least every 2 days. My goal for this topic is to get a trophy fish posted for a dolly, halibut, rainbow, steelhead and all 5 species of salmon.

I personally can't wait for this. I know your fishing smokes mine...my updates will be very slow until early july, except for the occasional big bluegill I will post. When the rivers turn muddy here, I really don't have anywhere else to go that produces consistently. Can't wait to see a 15 pounder! Good luck.

Here are some pics from a recent trip. I am fishing a lake that has only a mile of shoreline but has lots of 4 to 6 pounders with a few 8 pounders. I'ts defentetely not as good for big bows as the big alaskan rivers but hardly anyone fishes it, probably just me and my friends. I didn't catch any monsters but it's the first good kodiak open water bow fishing i had in a while. I caught 8 total including a 21 inch 3 pounder that i realeased. Since i was alone i couldn't take any pics of fish i released without hurting them but next time i should be with someone else.

This was the first time i have fished saltwater since september and i was fishing for dollies on a beach within city limits about a 5 minute drive from my houst. I caught 10 dollies in the hour leading up to high tide.

I rarely keep any dollies on purpose. Sometimes i will guthook some and have to keep one. They don't taste bad by any means but i just don't keep them that often.

Man you would have loved the one we caught in the Nass last year when we were chinook fishin. We thought it was a sockeye until we got it to shore :o Real beauty. I wanted it released but my buddy's dad caught it and he wanted dinner so into the pan he went. They taste really good. I think it weighed about 8 or 10 pounds. I've never been able to get them in the chuck (mainly because I've only done it twice)......what do you use to get them? (If I can be so bold) Thanks dude

Nice fish, PGkris! I have only caught one over 8 pounds in my life and i go after dolly's a lot!

I don't have to be bold on telling you what to use because many things work. These dollies are gorging on candlefish so they can fatten up. Many baitfish patterns will work, Clausers, smal Surf Candies, Thunder creeks just to name a few. If if it's a long slender baitfish pattern, it will work!

I caught this nice 25 inch rainbow on a kodiak lake fly fishing from my pontoon boat by myself. The photo isn't too great because it's hard to take pics by yourself in a pontoon boat without hurting the fish but that hen bow was great and is still swimming!!!

Nice rainbow! I entirely agree on how difficult it is to take pictures of fish from a tube by yourself....tough.....really tough. I've got a few pics I'm waiting to get developed. There's a fishy swimming around out there that I wish I had a picture of. Nice 23" bow I got last weekend from the tube. It's really starting to pick up around here. Hope the tourney starts soon so we can get at 'er!

I went camping at a secret lake for rainbow trout on memorial weekend on saturday and sunday. The fishing wasn't too hot but my friend and i managed to catch 12 fish apiece, all over 15 inches with a few topping out at 24 inches. We were fly fishing from our float tubes in pretty deep water. As you can tell i zoomed in quite a bit on the pics so you can't see the lake backround, Gotta keep your secrets a secret right ;)

Post by: Kodiak Commando on Jun 04, 2005, 09:05 PM
I went fishing the yesterday night for red salmon at the buskin river. I was going to pick up my dad at the airport so i decided to fish at the outlet of the lake. Right when i was about to leave i saw my strike indicator dissapear and i set the hook hard. A large male red salmon cleared the water several times and then took off downstream. I ran after the fish for about 100 yards and finally landed it after a 10 minute slugfest. Below is the pic of the fish that was destined for the frying pan!

I did get it on a fly rod and no it's not a pink pgkris it's a red aka sockeye salmon. Much harder to catch than pinks and they are a little bigger. Reds are widely considered the best eating salmon
Title: Re: Kodiak Commando's A.K. adventures, check for updates.(Nice Male Red salmon)
Post by: TroutFishingBear on Jun 06, 2005, 02:30 PM
I'm sure reds are the best salmon as kokanee salmon (landlocked sockeyes) are the best eating fish I've ever had and I've eaten pink salmon and coho before. Those reds just remind me of big kokanees, get me drooling! You are so lucky, if I was around the bear might have stolen your fish ;D ;) LOL just kiddin but you got my hunger going now!

Post by: Kodiak Commando on Jun 20, 2005, 10:14 AM
I went out at 4 in the morning today with kings on the brain. For the first time this year i busted out the 9 weight and boy it felt good  . I fished a hole in the river for about 5 minutes when i saw a fish follow and hit the fly. I set the hook hard and a 18 pound kind started headshaking and took off downstream about 50 yards. After several minutes i landed the fish and found it was smaller than i thought but it didn't matter, a king is a king. Later on i caught a jack king which for those who don't know is a male salmon that returns earlier than normal so they are much smaller.

Title: Re: Kodiak Commando's A.K. adventures, check for updates.( 9 kings in two hours)
Post by: Kodiak Commando on Jun 26, 2005, 12:41 AM
I went fishing on friday for king salmon at a local river. I went to my favorite hole only too see no fish at all which made me discouraged since the ocean was so inconsistent. I walked down the beach about 200 yards to the water since it was low tide, at high it would be a 50 yard walk. I didn't expect to see anything but after watching for 10 minutes I saw a big fish fin and then another and then a few kings breach, my heart started to pound then. I have caught all the kings at that point in the river which is great but the river is small and the kings true fighting greatness can only be experienced in the ocean. The fish were too far out to catch from shore so i got a workout by dragging my 70 pound scadden pontoon boat to the waters edge. I finally started rowing and spotted the school. I got within 60 feet and made a great cast with a lefty's Deciever and on the fourth or fifth strip and fish slammed it and immediately peeled off 100 yards  :o
I eventually landed the 15 or 16 pound female and started to fish and over the next two hours i landed 9 out of 11 kings which in the ocean is a great hook to land ratio. All of the fish were between 15 and 22 pounds, since i was in my pontoon boat i didn't get any pics and i was releasing them anyway so i didn't want to hurt these precious fish.

It isn't too hard to sneak up on the fish as long as it isn't calm and sunny. Even if it is sunny it is usually windy.

I went out again today (6 days in a row now, i am a true fishing bum) and caught 5 king salmon in my pontoon boat at the same spot i caught those 9 on friday. All the fish were between 15 and 20 pounds and fought like they were possesed. I need to take a break from this fishing so i don't get too spoiled  :D

Title: Re: Kodiak Commando's A.K. adventures, check for updates.( 12 pinks and one bear)
Post by: Kodiak Commando on Jul 21, 2005, 09:58 PM
Man oh man it was good to get out fishing today because i have not been out for a week and a half! Any way i went fishing  for pinks salmon at the buskin river which is a 8 mile long river that comes out of a big lake, the river is about 20 feet wide on average and gets about 80, 000 pinks a year and last year it got 120,000 pinks. It's quite a site to see a river that small clogged with 10,00 4 to 8 pounds salmon per mile  :o

I went to my favorite hole and one of the few river spots i enjoy because most of the pinks are still chrome and because buskin fish are big, about 4 pound average with plenty of 5 to 8 pounders. The river was real low so i had to be sneaky and i just dead drifted a clauser and watch 12 fish in an hour come and hit it. I was setting the hook purely on sight, no feel involved. Because the fish were still chrome they had plenty of power for my 5 weight especially 3 fish that took me into my backing which is vere impressive since they don't have much water to work with.

After the last fish a guy with a camer notified a bear was coming. So i left the river  but took some pictures of the bear that i have seen a lot. Unfortunately for the bear it's getting way to used to people so it may be a dead bear soon.

Title: Re: Kodiak Commando's A.K. adventures, check for updates.( Naknek River hog bows)
Post by: Kodiak Commando on Sep 10, 2005, 11:29 PM
Well i just got back friday night after fishing the naknek river for 6 days. For those who don't know the naknek river is located in bristol bay and along with the kvichichiak is considered alaska's best place to catch a bow over 30 inches. I never caught one over 30 but i did catch 4 around 27 to 29 inches and all were fat and full of piss and vinegar so they fought like possessed fish. My dad caught the biggest fish of the trip, a 34 inch 13 to 14 pound hog. Most of our fish were caught wading from shore but the big one and a few others were caught from drifting in our or our guides jet boat. Because of all the big fish we caught, the countless 18 to 24 inch bows and the chance to spend worry free days with my dad i would say it was a very successfull trip. Unfortunately i forgot to bring my tourney card but it would have been hard to get a good measurement pic anyway cuz of the size of our boat and where we were wading.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv503%2F99615%2FIM000464.jpg&hash=4e4a7ef738c31e3863cabe9db5d3dc0f)
This is the big one my dad caught, it fought so hard and long it was really tired so we had to release it quick which explains the crappy pic but no pic is worth hurting or killing such a magnificant fish!

KC,  Oh so familiar area!  I lived in King Salmon for 4 years.  Worked part time as a guide for bows and kings.  Great river!!!  Did you spend most of your time on the upper river, (above lake camp) or did you fish below rapids camp?  My best fish was a 33" fish caught right after ice out.  They're suckers for black maribou jigs.  Great pics, reminds me of the good ol' days on the Naknek. ;)

Barleydog are cabins were near the rapids camp. We mostly fished two areas, a group of islands in a place called the Braids and by the red salmon counting shack. I really love that river, i could never see myself living in King salmon but i know i will be back for fall of spring bows in the future.

Very nice,  Fished the braided area a little.  The bigger fish are up the river towards lake camp.  "If" you get back, see if you can fish by the old abandoned cabins 1/2 mile below lake camp.  HUGE fish!!!!  Add some monster grayling on a 5 wt., nice dollies, and some run-a-way silvers, and it's a great time! ;D

Species: Coho
Length: 32.5 inches

My father was able to get off work early yesterday so we bombed out the road to a popular lake on the road system. There were lots of boats there but i still managed to catch this male hog in my pontoon boat on a secret fly of mine! We only fished for 3 hours and the fish were real skittish so i wasn't too dissapointed that we only caught 1.
