Title: Thriller's 2005 Open Water Adventures
Post by: Thriller on May 15, 2005, 05:31 PM
Opening weekend finally arrived here in southern Manitoba.  Yesterday was a bit hectic with errands and the weather wasn't very nice (cloudy, windy, hovering just above freezing), so it wasn't going to be a family fishing day.

We went to a small reservoir called Stephenfield to make sure the boat was OK and everything working properly.  It was, except for marker lights on the trailer (we were travelling in daylight, so it wasn't a real big deal).  Anyway, the family went fishing on Mom's birthday and we didn't get skunked.  I caught this 20" pike trolling with a lipless crankbait I got for my birthday (first time it got wet)...it swallowed it and was bleeding pretty badly, so he came home and is now filleted - supper tomorrow.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mts.net%2F%7Edthille%2FDT_Stephenfield_pike1.JPG&hash=fb8804fb56156bf7c1f81250b1877489)

I can't have a post here with just one photo, so I had my wife take a photo of the rig as we were loading up to come back home.

I have a couple reels to re-spool now too...I am far too good at procrastinating, but they proved themselves to have too much memory and the one almost seems rotted - it broke every time I was trying to tighten a knot.

I saw a few of those legend boats on the weekend. They are pretty nice boats. What does one of those set a guy back?

That outfit is the V-151 All-Sport with a 40 4 stroke...got it last year...price was about $15...$19k after taxes - check out http://www.legendboats.com/.  It's a year old and I haven't got too many hours on it yet.  It has the canopy and full cover.  My wife was the one who decided we needed a full console for comfort's sake.

Troutbum - after doing the boneless fillets (first time I attempted removing the Y bones), we just dipped in a beaten egg, then Italian Style Fish Crisp, and fried them up in olive oil.  With my cholesterol levels, I should probably learn to bake / broil / grill fish better so that I can make it a bit healthier.

ginnz,

Not that I am going to remember, which boat were you in?  There was a couple (older than us) that we briefly chatted with as we passed each other.

Today we spent about 2 hours on the LaSalle River - a small tributary of the Red - we were just outside the city and had a bit of fun.

Well, things started off slowly, but eventually we got a few.  First fish was a rock bass, my very first.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mts.net%2F%7Edthille%2FDerek1strockbass1.JPG&hash=466b0790511987a829c8ae9d9f4373db)

After that, the order gets a bit confusing.  Suzanne landed her first rock bass.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mts.net%2F%7Edthille%2FSuzanne1strockbass2.JPG&hash=54e08df9914fefd5684fdb5ebb3d945f)

Somewhere in there, she lost a sauger, I had a small sauger hit my coloured weights as they were coming out of the water.  I caught a small sauger and then a larger one (maybe 14").  Then the joy came, and Suzanne caught her first MA.

It came in at about 10.5"

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mts.net%2F%7Edthille%2FS_MA_rock_measure4.JPG&hash=8564cb2ba9440747df381cd4cc15d7a8)

Final tally - Suzanne landed 3 rockies, including an MA.  Derek landed 2 sauger and 2 rockies and had a number of other hits, but tried to set the hook too quickly.

Except for the first fish, they were all in close to shore (a rod length out)...I was releasing my second sauger, my jig went into the water, and I had a rocky on while I still had a sauger in my hand...needless to say, that one got off.

Anyway, it was our first time there, we generally had a good time, and Suzanne's name is going to be in print.

Odd colored rockbass, the one's I get are brown with red eyes.

Nice fish! 8)
Title: Re: Thriller's 2005 Open Water Adventures
Post by: Thriller on May 29, 2005, 08:30 PM
The smaller ones were darker...I've seen enough colour variations not to count on that for identification.  I can't speak for the big one with any certainty, but the fish we caught today did generally have orange / red eyes.  I did notice on at least one that they were kind of blotchy with some parts of the iris red and other parts darker.  I don't know.

It has to be a rocky - the only other possibilities for the watershed are bluegill, white bass, and black crappie - white bass have separated dorsal fins, I've seen enough crappie to know the shape is wrong and it would be a monster bluegill if it weren't a rock bass.

They're definately rock bass, just that big one looks different to me. Very interesting! ;)

Good to see that Suzanne got her first Master Angler!  I hope you have a whole wall available for all of the certificates that your family is going to get in the next few years.  Congratulations to her for the nice sized rock bass!

Nice rock bass. Way to go. Hopefully your summer keeps going as well as it is starting.

And here I thought we were off to a poor start...two trips out in the boat and one fish boated...2 shore trips (I think) so far and the first was one sauger and a few stonecats...it took us two weeks into the regular season to have a half decent time...funny thing was with the number of other folks around, we saw only one other fish caught while we were there.

Let's hope Sunday afternoon was the start of a better season  ;D 8)

Monophil, I'm thinking the certificates will primarily go into a binder in protective sleeves.  I'll make sure to pass along your congrats.

The boss was on call, so she had to go to the hospital and do rounds this morning, so I took the kids back to the LaSalle river just on the edge of the city.

I got the kids set up with a piece of crawler on a jig and told them just to hold it off bottom (i.e. a rod's length from the shore).  I was setting up my rod when I heard Joseph.

Here he is with his first rock bass.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mts.net%2F%7Edthille%2F20050604Josephrockbass1.JPG&hash=12731ef9a3f38955b7dfea1c31c1e487)

A little while later, Luke got excited.  It turns out he had a small bullhead on.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mts.net%2F%7Edthille%2F20050604Lukebullhead2.JPG&hash=896134b281a8944734fa4c6031265efe)

On the same piece of crawler, Luke then caught his first rock bass.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mts.net%2F%7Edthille%2F20050604Lukerockbass3.JPG&hash=237bfd31668e95e7fec8f443c3a73abd)

The boys eventually tired of fishing...we had a couple of snags and lost a couple of jigs.  I caught a small sauger.  Finally, Teresa got into a fish and caught a nice rock bass.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mts.net%2F%7Edthille%2F20050604Teresarockbass4.JPG&hash=224add768050e923eb76c245b759e7fb)

Teresa's and Luke's were nice fish - about 9"...just short of the 10" required for a Manitoba Master Angler.

The kids enjoyed themselves, which was the primary reason for getting out today.

There seem to be some problems with the photos...I'll try editing them again and uploading again.

Finally something worth posting about again.

Here's a 37.5" channel cat

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050625DerekMAchannel5.jpg&hash=94c48b990bf775464db358c4637554f0)

My 9 year old daughter caught this 33"...she was a real trooper...first measure had it at 33.5, just a half in shy of a Manitoba Master Angler award, so we measured again, more carefully and came up with 33.  She wasn't disappointed - more like pumped although she did take a bit of a break after that fight.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050625Teresa_channel6.jpg&hash=b7306a48adf9819cb622afce7f20702f)

Thanks guys...the cat fishery around here is truly amazing...only problem is that it is one of many fun ones we have.  This was only the first time really targeting them this year.  I'd been thinking about heading to my favourite crappie lake today, but the weather isn't too nice...I guess we'll maybe get the laundry and vacuuming done  :o ::)

Post by: TroutFishingBear on Jun 26, 2005, 06:32 PM
My biggest channel is a mere 8 lbs. I did catch a 2.2 lb bullhead once though which is pretty nice. I'm not much of a catfisherman mostly because the only place around here that's any good is the colorado river which isn't what it used to be. the no bag limit bs and the removals by USFWS and CDOW really have hurt that fishery. We also have to deal with the predatory roundtail chub which hits anything you throw out there immediately and you have to deal with 10 of those for every channel. What is your regulation on keeping cats up there?
Title: Re: Thriller's 2005 Open Water Adventures
Post by: Thriller on Jun 26, 2005, 07:14 PM
Well, a number of years back, a few people interested in the fishery convinced the government that every channel cat over 24" has to be released.  There are still some poachers out there, but it has helped make for an amazing, world-renowned channel cat fishery.

Well it hasn't been much of a weekend for fishing - we have too much water...launches all over are either closed because you can't find them or access is too mucky.

Anyway, today we tried to find a shore spot.  Amongst all the current, we found a backwater pool full of carp.  It was a bit tough to get them to bite, but in under 2 hours, I did wind up landing 2 and had 2 others get off.  One of the ones that got off took me for quite a run - that might have been a Master Angler length...oh well.

My MFF tourney card was on the freezer by the back door instead of in my truck or one of the tackle bags....

Here's the first one that was about 25.5".

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050702DTcarp4.jpg&hash=577d12906db35c455fd111866376584f)

Here's the second that was about 26.5".

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050702DTcarp5.jpg&hash=1e4835b9fa2755829a5c22bb1aae4c8d)

It wasn't fast and furious by any stretch of the imagination, but those were good fights...I have marks on my belly from where I was trying to leverage the rod.  The 7' rod I was using today doesn't have much backbone, so it was bent over pretty good.  I need to find myself another rod...hmm...maybe while the wife is away this coming week...  ::)

Well we went out to the same spot late this morning and bumped into a friend and his wife who I had told about yesterday.  He was pretty excited as they were having a blast with both carp and channel cats.

It was pretty tough to start - I could see lots of fish in the grass, but couldn't get bait to them as I would have liked.  Anyway, once I started fishing the more open part of the pond, I got a little carp.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050703DTcarp2.jpg&hash=39b0d59a18a2c6cc6a53278a4b8730a8)

A little while later I had a hit and a great fight on.  While the fight was on, Suzanne had a hit...double header.  The result was 2 Manitoba master anglers...a 34.5" channel cat for me and a 31" carp for Suzanne.  Here's a photo I like to call fish crossed lovers.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2Ffishcrossedlovers7.jpg&hash=57d8c449720638e28120ed8942ed5c30)

I had a couple more fish on, but lost them...I got a smaller cat as well - about 32".  Then we were thinking about packing up when a thunderstorm hit us - it was short, but we got wet and there was a bit of hail.

It wasn't perfect, but we had fun with some nice fish.

Title: Re: Thriller's 2005 Open Water Adventures
Post by: TroutFishingBear on Jul 05, 2005, 03:23 PM
nice cat and carp. The red river sounds like an unbelieveable fishery. That's awesome that every cat over 24" has to be released, here our CDOW and USFWS urge everyone to keep and kill every catfish so endangered chubs and suckers can live. I'm sure the colorado wouldn't be a fishery even close to the red river but it would be maybe a poor man's hudson. Nice cat though, what's the biggest you've gotten in there?
Title: Re: Thriller's 2005 Open Water Adventures
Post by: Thriller on Jul 05, 2005, 07:14 PM
TFB...I only began targeting them last year and have really only been out a few times...so far, my biggest is 37.5"...that will change in time.  Channel cats, carp, freshwater drum, walleye - there are many other species in the Red that can be a lot of fun, but these are the ones most targeted...it is an awesome fishery...throw in a crawler and who knows what you'll get.

We have very high waters right now due to rainfall, which does limit access - many places now if you cast from shore you will cast into trees...a number of the available launches are closed...somehow we persevere  ;D

Post by: Thriller on Jul 12, 2005, 02:32 PM
It's hardly worth posting, but I walked to the Assiniboine River this morning (about 3 blocks)...you get some looks carrying a 7' rod in the heart of the city...anyway, the river is high and just downstream from the Osborne Bridge, there is some slack water...I thought I might find some goldeye there...set up with a bobber and crawler...had a few tugs...probably bait-stealing stonecats...I saw a couple fish in the grass that the water is up to...it was a nice morning to be out as I beat the heat, saw a duck family, and saw some fish activity...I was about to walk home for breakfast when this little kitty came up to wash the skunk smell off...

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050712kitty2.jpg&hash=9db30c2c95471c03f593ebe8ba33d227)

They sure are pretty when they are smaller.

Title: Re: Thriller's 2005 Open Water Adventures
Post by: Thriller on Jul 14, 2005, 05:58 PM
OK, here's a response that is a bit more worthy...we figured we would get out for an hour or so this morning...we were at the spot about 3.5 hours as the fishing was good.

Luke started things off with a pretty little drum.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050714Lukedrum1.jpg&hash=c4527f8a911d377440fbde08f16eb179)

So the kids pretty much wound up taking turns with the one cat rod...here is Joseph fighting a fish with a bit of help from Suzanne...

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050714Josephfighting4.jpg&hash=c3ee0095705e5ef0952099f035d4aec1)

And here is the result...a 34.5" channel cat...Joseph picks up his second Master Angler fish in a second species.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050714JosephMAchannel5.jpg&hash=062162ecd86762dba8b4cd9c14585122)

Next up was the princess of just and inch too short...she got a big channel cat, but it was about 33", one inch too short for a Master Angler award.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050714Teresabigcat9.jpg&hash=19d2d8dc92d47ac092055148a8abbcae)

Somewhere in there, I was catching a few fish too...got a smallish drum and a couple of cats in the 32-33" range, as well as some smaller ones.  Anyway, since it was Luke's turn, he wound up with this 32.5" beauty...he was a bit disappointed it wasn't a master though...

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050714Lukebigcat10.jpg&hash=68f511a06ac93911c439aebdc7d38a8e)

Suzanne got in the action with the only carp of the day...a 31.5" Master.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050714SMAcarp12.jpg&hash=d4d87adf4e83d8c02ae26889989e5cde)

After that, things get blurry...between baiting, casting, catching, netting, it was a busy time.  Anyway, after a while, Luke did finally get his first Master Angler  :thumbup_smilie:  - a 34.5" channel catfish...it was quite a bit more colourful than Joseph's...unfortunately, the photo with Luke didn't turn out very well.  However, here is a photo of the fish.

Toward the end, things slowed down a bit...we got a bit tired as evidenced by us losing fish...here is a parting shot of Teresa fighting a fish...we stayed as long as our little bag of bait lasted  8)

There are some folks around here who do catch these cats on fly rods...I'm not a fly fisher (at the momeny anyway), but I believe they typically use an 8 wt rod.

Um, there can be plenty long fight with a 7.5' heavy action rod and 20 lb. test...besides, any cats over 24" have to be released, so minimizing fight is best for the fish.

I caught a 26.5" carp on a general purpose med-light with 8 lb. IronSilk on it...that poor rod had me worried for a while.

So the kids pretty much wound up taking turns with the one cat rod...here is Joseph fighting a fish with a bit of help from Suzanne...

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi22.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fb327%2FDThille%2FFishing%2FSummer%25202005%2F20050714Josephfighting4.jpg&hash=c3ee0095705e5ef0952099f035d4aec1)

And here is the result...a 34.5" channel cat...Joseph picks up his second Master Angler fish in a second species.

Not to take anything away from the nice catch by the little kid, but shouldn't he have to catch the fish all by himself in order to receive the Master Angler Award?  I know for other records nobody can so much as touch the line or pole.

crappie66 I hear you and I thought my wife did a bit much...but it isn't like a line record...these are brutes to get in and young guys like him wouldn't be able to get them in at all, but he wanted to go fishing.  I don't feel great about submitting it, but I haven't seen anything specifically forbidding it.  How far does one take it though?  Can someone else net your fish?  Someone pretty much needs to with some of these bad boys.

Anyway, we took a trip to a nice little impoundment...my wife is tired of going there...we got into some baby walleye.  I caught one crappie, which is on the tourney pics.

I had a couple small walleye get off at the boat...my wife brought a few to the boat...biggest might have been 12" or so...here's the smallest.

Don't get me wrong, the fish is definately a brute, and every kid should hook into one.  It would be a sure fire way to get a kid hooked on fishing.  I am not saying it is right or wrong to submit it, that is for you to decide.  I was just wondering if it is ethical.

Considering you only need 2 witnesses to actually submit the paperwork, truly unethical folks could simply fill out a bunch of paperwork without actually even going fishing.  I appreciate what you are saying - it is definitely a gray area.  The little guy waited with the bait in the water and hooked it himself.  He had some assistance bringing it in.  I certainly don't think my wife should submit it as she didn't do it all either.  This is a tourism program, not an official weigh-in or anything.

I guess what it comes down to for me is this - when the little guy hooks a fish, gets some help because he isn't strong enough to bring it in himself, the fish is landed and measured and determined to be MA size and his eyes light up and he starts jumping up and down from excitement, I don't think I'm going to deny him because he wasn't the only one touching the rod.  When they are old / large / strong enough to fight the fish themselves, they'll be doing that.

I understand the ethical issue you are raising and appreciate it.  These kids are hooked for life on fishing now and are being taught to respect the fish and to treat them properly and to respect our natural resources.  Personally, I think that is more important than whether or not a form should be submitted because his mother helped him.

Respectfully,

Derek

Sweet catfish and congrats to the little ones, getting them fishing and landing a bunch of nice cats has gotta be great for them.   I bet they are still smiling.
