What kind of fish is this?????
« on: Oct 14, 2007, 06:17 PM »
There's a two page debate over on Ice Shanty on what type of fish this is.  I thought I'd put it here too for people to see who don't go on IS. So, whatcha think?  It was caught last winter on lake Winnipesaukee NH by my buddy in the pic.

Landlock Salmon.  It is not a brown.  A brown would have more of a blunt tail.

I know it's a big no no, but just 20 minutes earlier my other buddy released a traditional looking Landlocked. This looked nothing like that one, if it had, a pic would not have been taken..........

That fish is in spawing colors.  You will find some spawn later than others and hold their spawning colors later in the year.

I think somebody posted something on IS about them changing colors. First I had ever heard of that. This fish has a different shaped head. It's flatter and longer than the fish caught earlier.

Google Atlantic Salmon and click on images.  There is one from a cornell site that looks exactly like your fish.

I've caught a bazillion LLsalmon and another bazillion Browns and that fish is a LLsalmon. Some of them are tough to tell because they don't all have a very deep fork in the tail, especialy the males. Things that identify this fish as a salmon to me are for 1 its body shape, It's torpedo like, slender toward the tail, bulky towards the head, not football brown like when they get that size, 2 its eye sets well inside the jaw whereas a browns would sit just inside the corner of the jaw. 3 The spots on it and its color have that faded just recently spawned salmon look which I have noticed a few salmon exhibit early in the ice season.

I could be completely wrong and it could a weird looking Brown though  ::)

That is a Brown Trout .. the long and slender look appear because it's the dead of winter and he's not eaten all that much due to metabolic reductions and has lived on body reserves.

It looks just like the Atlantic Salmon pictured on the back of the NYS 2006-2008 Fishing regulations.

TRAPPER and PP,
Look at the link in my post above.  LL Salmon all the way.  It is a carbon copy of the fish Home Wood is holding.  If you can't tell it is a LL salmon, put on some glasses and try again.
