Hey Fly Tiers...What's In The Vise?
« on: Feb 15, 2011, 03:47 AM »
I've been working up Pheasant Tails, Copper Johns, Cahills and "Mini" Wooly Buggers. What are you guys tying for spring?

Yarn Flies and glow bugs.. My kid and I were messin with the fly tying stuff at BP when I purchased my waders.. He bugged me relentlessly for a month to get the stuff because he wanted to tie flies. I picked him up a cheap vice and an tool kit for Christmas and he's whipped a hundred or so since then. Glow bugs, yarn flies, some streamers and hair jigs are about the max of my capabilities... So it work's out perfect for a 7 year old... ;D ;D ;D if he sticks with it I may get him and I lesson or two..to whip up some real flies. Going to start tying some tiny hair jigs soon for spring. Soon as I find all my painted jig heads...

Right now it's still #10 and #12 stonies, hairsears, prince nymphs, in dark olive, brown and black. For the Spring it's buggers, and jigs.
I fish for a living. I fish for fun. When I have a day off I go fishing. I see a pattern here.

Just had my 2nd fly tying class tonight. I'm greener than the grass! I'm told though that my firsts will catch me some fish so we will see. Now it's time to purchase some of the tools to make more. Purchased materials for Wooly Buggers (Olive & Black, Caddis (Olive & Black). Afterward, Pheasant tails, midges & scuds. Probably Stoneflies after that.

I used a Peak rotary vise tonight but I didn't much like it. I looked at the Sava F1 vise from Slovenia but it's 330 euro's which is about $400 in US. Way out of my range.

To many choices so I'll have some homework to do.

Take a good look at Danvise. I've been using one for almost a year now with nothing but good to say. Very affordable and rock solid hook holding.

Very nice alewife pattern. Epoxy head?

I've got a Tuffle Eye kit on my "to Buy" list.

i use a nor-vice for most of my patterns, but tie egg flys on a cheep regal knock off vise, the nor-vise can do some cool things with its lathe type rotation, but will set you back a pretty penny ;D

The alewife is about 2and a half inches long and the leech is about 3.
The head on the alewife is the new fish skulls from Flymen fishing company. They make the streamer heads and beadheads for nymphs with eyes. Real cool stuff.
