Trolling for browns
« on: Mar 30, 2006, 08:13 PM »
Question: what lure do you use in trolling for browns?  I know a spot that has produced browns consistently and I want to give a shot trolling.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

If you are trolling browns in the spring near the surface try jointed rapalas in the 7 or 9 size in perch, orange and gold, black and gold and fire tiger.  Downriggers in the summer, Michigan Stinger spoons.

Charter captains I know who troll for browns use a variety of "flutter spoons" in various colors. They seldom troll very deep or very far from shore either, using downriggers to fish at specific depths, once they mark fish on their sonar. Friends I know who troll for browns and salmon on Champlain in the early spring, use planers and run just off shallow gravel bars, even beaches, often running the lures over less than  4 feet of water.   -Jim

In the spring I troll big streamers out of a canoe with sinking fly line it usually produces well.
