I hit the water around 9:30pm and the area that had been producing was weed grown and I moved on to other water. If it was slow, I would come back and hit it with a weedless frog. It has been slower (size of fish) this year for me and I think between the colder water and the much higher water (I think this is the main reason) I was hoping to find some of the quality fish that I normally can find. It started out with a slow pick of 3lb class LM, fun but not what I was looking for. I had 7 fish and around 1:00 the fish turned on with the smallmouth hitting hard! Most of the fish were in sandy or rocky areas. I had the biggest fish of the night, come unhooked at my feet as I climbed down rock filled, a ankle breaking bank, in the dark (no light, it spooks the fish) so I could not tell if it was a LM or SM... I broke one nice fish off and it was my own fault; ten fish and I had not re-tied... I know better! I re-fished spots that I had hit earlier and the fish were now hitting! I have often found the fishing improves as the night goes on... In the end, 12 bass with a wall hanging smallie being the best! The high water has made it MUCH harder to work the shore line, but the effort is worth it!
The owls, loones and whippoorwills were going at it big time last night making for great background music to the slapping of a jitterbug being taken! I also got one nice pickerel (a rare catch for me at night) and countless rock bass...
The trip was worth a little lost sleep! Went to bed at 3:45 and up at 7:00 and I feel great!
