I just picked up a big Shimano at the pawn shop. i know these AX 500S aren't that much in the U.S. but this stuff always costs more in Canada. Does anyone else have one and how do they perform?

The ax is a cheaper version in the shimano catalog of reels. I have had some pretty good luck on them in the uls version fishing on the ice.

I discovered the lesser quality when I was carp fishing! It worked fine...even caught my pb on it...and the drag worked allright...but when I turned the drag right off and used it as a baitrunner I found that it didn't turn nearly as freely as the big pit zebco I have. Bottom line I guess is the fewer bearings, the less smooth the action.
