Title: new to me
Post by: Eastciderida on Nov 17, 2015, 04:42 PM
Decided not to spend a ton of money on a boat picked up this bad little fishing machine for 850. Good running 2 stroke 20hp downriggers ton of rod holders. Only thing it needs is a good vacuum and next year a new floor which I'm pumped about. Has aluminum stringers so no having to rebuild the support just cut a new floor glass it and thinking some vinyl cover instead of carpet. Off to the q next year.

Nice man!!! I got the same boat i think lol. You got a great deal. I picked mine up for $2500 with a new 2005 25hp 4 Stroke. Also needed new floors. I got it tagged for Quabbin and spent as much time as possible out there.

What gate do you plan to launch from?

Here is mine with the new floor and seats.

Looks like the same floor plan. How long did the floor take you?  Think it's gate 8 I fish the big long section. Candle and bait shop right at end of the road.

So it's 45 for quabinn seal and only 8 bucks to park every time you drop in?

So it's 45 for quabinn seal and only 8 bucks to park every time you drop in?

The seal is 45 but u only have to do that once. It carries over year to year so its free, unless you use the boat on another body of water or break the seal. They also do free tagging twice a year in the winter. Parking is 8$ per trip or 50$ for a season pass. Season pass pays for itself pretty quick.

The floor didnt take long at all. If the carpet is still in tact you can use it as a template. If not, try to keep the old flooring together as best you can. Which will be hard to do if its the same plywood stuff i had. Came out in pieces. The boards are pop riveted to the aluminum cross beams, so youll have to drill those out. There is also blown in foam under the flooring which the wood will most likely be stuck to.

I stripped the old carpet and wood out in a couple hours. Shop Vac'd and scrubbed down the inside (i used diluted bleach/water) and rinsed it. Then gave it a couple days in the hot sun to dry out any moisture that was in there.

I launch out of 31 as it is the closest to me and provides excellent bass fishing areas and a short ride to productive laker/salmon spots. Gate 8 is primarily known for the salmon and lakers. Long, skinny, and straight makes it great for trolling. Its not known for its bass fishing tho. In speaking to the Rangers they will confirm that bass arent as plentiful as the other side.

Here is a couple pics of the the floor in progress.

Old flooring (very spongy in main traffic area):

Good idea with cutting the carpet and using as template will make it so much easier. The foam in mine is just small little pod section nothing like that but going to strip it's saturated. What foam did you use?  Also not sure how it's conceded to the stringers. Going to probably cut carpet before winter and work on cutting the new plywood.
Title: Re: new to me
Post by: Baitbucket on Nov 18, 2015, 09:20 AM
I didnt replace the foam. It was wet, but a couple days in the sun and it was bone dry. Be prepared to do a little trimming on the new plywood to get it to fit. As the boat tapers and narrows as you go down, the ply wood is not as wide as the carpet. Just test fit till is sits snug. Belt sander works well for trimming it down and tapering the edges.

Also, not sure if you are aware, but i believe pressure treated wood is a no no. The chemicals and aluminum dont play well. I used regular 1/2in ply and sealed it with some Thompsons mold/mildew resistant water sealant (deck seal) on the top. sides, and bottom. But my boat has a cover when not in use in the yard and sits in a garage in the winter. So it sees very little water inside. The carpet is simple outdoor mold/mildew resistant carpet. It was super cheap and easier on the feet than vinyl, especially for the kids.

That is going to be a mint boat for the 💰.When I replaced the floor in my welded aluminum crest liner I discovered water logged foam. I dug it all out and replaced with foundation foam. Cut to fit between the stringers with layers of 2 inch and 1 inch to get to just below the plywood.Good luck with your boat project.

If you replace the foam use a closed cell foam. Reason being is it will reject more water than open cell foam.

lol.... a 50hp 4 cylinder is hard to disguise as a 20hp. little bit of a size difference

Taking it out tomorrow morning for a good test ride. Seafoamed the engine and fresh gas have the motor running first turn of the key. Hope it's idle speed is not to fast for trolling. Need to get a cheap fish finder and test out the bilge pump

Took the boat out twice today. First time using down riggers think I was doing it right. Fished quinsig not a bite. Engine full throttle spits and chugs but back it off a little runs good and fast. Trolls at a great speed. Maybe 1 or 2 more times this season and packing it up.

Whats your top speed and what speeds are you getting trolling? I only ask cause i had a hell of a time getting mine to troll under 3mph.

I would say Def under 3mph. Just putting it in gear it's barely moving I have no gauges so couldn't tell you speed. Will have to bring my GPS next time out and see where I'm at. Top speed with just me in it would say between 20 and 25. Feel like the boat is much heavier then it looks after towing and driving it. Steering is very stiff might try cloaking the steering cable in some solution heard they get gunked up after a couple years.

If its quick you can add a trolling plate to slow you down.

There should be some grease fittings for the steering cable. Mine was a little stiff but is nice and smooth now after a good greasing.

Let me know what your getting for troll/top end speeds when you get a GPS on it. Navionics on your phone is pretty accurate.

Replacing plywood means replacing it again in time. Use wrong plywood and it eat your boat.
1/4 aluminum (diamond plate) instead of 3/4 plywood is less weight  and will never have to be replaced again.
Won't stain like carpet ether. You can use paint on bed liner if you like match color like carpet.
Leave small gap All the  way around so boat can flex some. I Put it in tight first time first set of wave popped rivet lose. Trimmed pcs and remounted work great no squeaks

Not planning on this boat lasting or keeping longer then 5 years tops. Bought it cheap for that reason floor is the biggest thing I'm getting done. Will never replace the motor or put much money into it. Probably got a grand total into boat now with cover lights and other small things if it lasts 3 years I'm happy with that

Bait bucket did you use adhesive for the rug? While floor was bolted down? How much extra carpet did you leave on the edge to tuck down? Ripped the two layers of old carpet out today along with the floor layer over original floor. Have old carpet and some old flooring to make a diagram to cut the new floor with. Marking the str
ingers and cutting the new floor soon just wondering how I should do the carpet.

I used regular adhesive, but i think it may have been for outdoors. I didnt wrap carpet around the edges, i went to the edges.

And so it begins got 3/4 dry ply plywood but going to seal all the floor boards. Just need to fit in the boat and shave some corners to make it fit. Pre drill holes for screws seal it and lay carpet and it's done. Debating on pulling some of the original floor to save some weight.

Nice. Where did you find that plywood, the Depot? I was pricing 3/4" marine plywood a few years back and got sticker shocked. The guy at the lumber yard talked me into 1/2" A/C exterior plywood. Painted it, and painted the edges with two coats. Used indoor/outdoor rug adhesive and it worked well.

One thing to consider is getting marine carpet. When I did that project, I got it. It has rubber base backing and straight fibers. The boat I have now, I just did all the carpet two weeks ago. I got the gray indoor/outdoor from the Depot. It looks good but, the quality is not there and it is looped fibers. Anytime a crankbait or treble hooks touch it, it's a wrestling match to get it unstuck. The marine stuff is a few dollars more per square foot. Another hard learned lesson for me.
Title: Re: new to me
Post by: Eastciderida on Dec 02, 2015, 02:39 PM
Got it at Lowe's. 32 a sheet. Marine was to expensive for my budget. Going to seal the plywood so should last a good amount of time. Going to get some 20oz marine carpet and some adhesive from hd. So far I paid 850 for boat and probably another 500 with seats seat post wood carpet so still not a bad deal for a good boat.

Same exact thing i did with they plywood. Sealant can take a little while to dry. Moild and mildew resistant outdoor carpet is what i used. Very cheap pirce wise and should be fine for Quabbin fishing.

Checked out the carpet at home depot going to pass on that stuff and get marine 16oz. Little cheaper then 20oz but guy said I Def should put in marine. Baby cooperated today and let me get the floor boards shaved down to fit got one layer of spar urethane down on one side of the floor. Need to cut the front seats out and two small floor sections for under the console.next is stripping more of the old floor out and pulling the steering cable and trying to clear the gunk out to loosen the steering.

It's getting there. Take the guys advice. I suggest you get the marine carpet also. I just bought the Depot stuff 3 weeks ago because I was in a rush. I regret it now, live and learn I guess. That's why I suggested earlier in the thread so you wouldn't make the same mistake I did. I know your trying to keep the budget down, but I don't think it's that much more. Good luck, keep at it.

Stripped most of the old floor out. Used spar urethane to waterproof the plywood letting it sit in the house over the winter to fully cure. Here's the final floor put into place
Just need to cut a new front seat out to but that can wait. Packing it up till the spring time when it comes out for the quad in seal

Best 80 bucks I have ever spent going to buy the Co pilot and a new foot control and it is good to go. Also picked up my 5.5hp sears game fisher today starts first pull going to use that for trolling. Everything on hold till the spring and new floor and seats go in. I had a 50# motor with Co-Pilot/keyfob controller last season and it was ok. It was a little small for my 18ft boat and the winds that can pop up on the Q.  I upgraded to a 70lb with i-pilot link and a Humminbird 859CI HD head unit (only brand that works with i-pilot) for the electronic anchor and GPS guided contour following for next season.

I believe the Powerdrive V2 can be upgraded to the i-pilot as well. You may wanna make sure the trolling motor is rated for saltwater use if you ever intend to use it on the salt.

You probably wont need the 5.5hp kicker tho, these 20-25hp motors dont use much gas at all and trolling speed shouldnt be an issue. I can go from the tip of 31 to the barrels and back (~16miles round trip) on a couple gallons of gas.

Front seats cut glued carpeted and stapled. Waiting for a nice stretch of weather to do the floor in the boat.

Is that one of those quabbin  20 hp motors. Cause you take that in ocean and it is a 20 hp. You better keep eye on the weather.
I know a lot of guys put 20hp covers on 35hp motors. Thats a lot boat for 20 hp. What's its  max. Hp Rating?
I wish my carpet was removable for the salt. 06 model. New models it removable. Carpet holds a lot of water during wash down. All the blood from pogies and scales from mackerels can be a challenge.

They go by serial number on motor to know its HP now. My 25hp 4 Stroke cruises at 22mph on my 18' seanymph

It's a 20hp gets up to 23mph with 2 people in it probably more if I get around to cleaning the carb. Just trying to figure out how to get the dam thing off blocked by starter and starter complicated to get out. Def going to watch the weather if I take it offshore. Amazing how much float it has for a small boat sits tall in the water fully loaded

Also don't eat fish so almost all fish won't even make it to the floor plenty of room behind the motor to unhook and realase. Has a little section behind the motor that drains water out the back of the boat

If it was my boat I wouldn't use carpet on the floor. It just holds moisture and is hard to wash out fish slime and blood. After sealing it I would use something like a truck bedliner paint or Tuff Coat. Oh and hooks like to get stuck in the carpet.

Cut pile so hook catching is not as bad. Going to have my one year old on the boat all the time so tuff coat vinyl wasn't an option. I'm a clean freak so not to worried about the carpet getting dirty most fish will be on the back deck drainage area or in the water unhooked quick pic and back in the water. Going to feel much better being barefoot fishing

Will why do you post nonsense?  I have never and will never see them check a serial number and know some old timers that are doing exactly what Knot There mentions.  I dont advocate it however your suggestion of checking is incorrect and if you suggest they have yours its because you look like a terrorist  :P

Eastside....there is zero upside to having carpet....you will learn this in time!  I'd hate to hear your youngster mistakenly finds that small hook that your buddy drops in the carpet and forgets about!

Last season I watched them walk down and check serial numbers. Did it at 31 and gate 8 when I went. To every boat that went thru. When I asked the ranger what they were doing he said they were verifying the motor matched the cover. That's not me speculating,  that's the words direct from the Rangers mouth.

As for carpet,  I had my boat out a couple times a week the whole quabbin season. Took my wife and 2 kids out several times. Zero issues with the carpet. Much more comfortable foe the little ones as well.

Which gate you hitting. I have all next week off and plan to get out as many times as i can. Plan to drive down Friday to get in line and just spend the night in the truck. Not going to wake the wifey and kids to drop me off that early lol. I prolly wouldn't sleep any better at home anyway.

Shoot me a PM when u know for sure, we can keep in contact.
