Picture for fishlessman
« on: Sep 12, 2018, 05:15 AM »
Where did all the salmon go in Sebago?

This picture is the property I look after on Jordan bay off of Deep Cove  Shores. The people that own the property now, knew one of the guys in the picture and said they would do this "often".

They would run the net out half way across Jordan bay and close it up in this little cove, where their guest house is now,  and people would line up with nets and baskets and scoop out the salmon. You can see the net, the salmon splashing, and a guy dipping them like smelts in the background.

Maybe they should be dragging for the togue.

The togue came about 50 years after this picture was taken.

If someone could ID the buggy, it would kind of date the picture, I believe it is a model T, which would make it some time after 1908.

The guy that owns the place said he thought it was from the early 20s??

I get a kick out of how formally some folks would dress for outdoor activities.  The guy holding the net on the right appears to be wearing a necktie.  Looks like they stopped to scoop salmon on their way home from church on Sunday.

I've seen that in old hunting pictures as well.

They don't appear to be over harvesting . The methods are odd by today's standards ,but I only see a couple two or three salmon  per person.  I'm sure there were less boats back then and less fishing pressure from boats then there is today .

Is  WOODCHIP in the back with the dipnet ??
