Wow those gar are huge. I've caught some smaller ones in lake champlain, but nothing in comparison to those monsters.. They have some nasty teeth. I bet a fish of that size could realy do a number on a swimmer... :o
-
Alligator gar arent in champlain I dont believe. I think their are regular gar, but not alligator.
-
When i was stationed in Kansas we use to catch them in the Topeka River. Some of them were four to five feet long, nothing as heavy as the two you have pictures of.They are a crazy fighting fish fun to catch. Most people would just throw them on the banks to die, they said they were garbage fish, really ticked me off, some of the people would get mad at me for letting them go.
-
There are gar in Champlain, I believe Longnose gar, but not the gators, either way they are one badass fish. hey Caroga where in Champlain do they hang out (if you dont mind my asking)? Ive been here 4 years and have yet to catch one but would love to set into one. My buddy just got a boat so we can run around the lake now.
-
I believe they are mostly a southern fish and are not as far as Champlain.
I cant believe they jsut threw them on the banks to die. those things have to be pretty old to get that big. IT ticks me off when people jsut toss fish on shore to die adn leave them there.

We caught them in crown point, if you know where the public campsite is, and the old historical battlefield to the left. There is a long rock pier that comes out from the battlefield. I caught them from the end of that. I was casting dardevils. I don't know if they were alligator gar or something else. But they were deffinately gar.. Good luck and hope you catch a few..

The ones in New York are Longnosed Gar, they grow to about 4 feet and maybe 20 pounds. I've caught them in Black Lake fishing for bass, they hit slow moving lures.
Better sport yet is bowfin, they're aren't very common, but if you can find them, don't go swimming, they're known to take chunks out of people! :o They are in Black Lake as well.

Now THOSE would be fun to bowfish!
-
If you can pierce their hide! :o
-
Cut on contact would take those things easy. I wouldn't try it with an expandable unless you were doing more than 300fps.
-
I think you better read the information about them, it says their skin is a tough/strong as armor.

Ive seen video of people shooting an aligator with a bow, ifa tip can penetrate an aligator hide Im willing to bet it could penetrate through that gars skin, not that I would promote that though.
-
They shoot alligators in the neck, their skin isn't much tougher than cowhide there.
-
Regardless......who's denying it would be a blast??
-
i heard but am not sure but they whole chickens for bait to catch those things
-
Yup chickens.
Regardless......who's denying it would be a blast??
That it would be...lol

There are outfitters in the states in texas i believe that bowhunt for aligator gar, i watched some streaming video of them hunting them at night didn't look like the arrows had any problems penatrating.
-
When I was living in Louisiana, the state record came from a chain gang while they were cleaning out the irrigation canals. They spotted a large alligator gar and asked permission to fish for it but were denied. The individual in charge did give them permission to catch it if they could, and they did. I remember it was over seven feet long and I forgot how much it weighed. They relocated it to one of the larger bayous and released it.
Bow fishing is common in Louisiana, and there is no shortage of guides. They go out at night on large fan boats with huge spot lights all around them. Once you see a fish you shoot it, they don't target any particular species.

ALLIGATOR GAR on Infisherman right now..9pm!
-
Sweet...Im gonna go check it out... ;D
-
d**n! Missed it! lol
-
Holly molly those are big alligator gar. :o
I wouldn't want them to grab you, at the minimum you would probably lose a finger or two. :'(
I bet they were a blast to catch and land, defiantly a extra large steel leader would be in order. ;D

Those are small alligator gar. I lived in MS and you would cast near a fallen tree and watch it swim away. 6-8' is common from what I saw. Just monsters.
-
Those gar are some of the best gamefish in the world. They can grow up to 13 feet long and 350 pounds, though anymore one over 150 is big one.
Sadly they have been horribly mismanaged, almost wiped out in some areas. They always got the blame for eating all the gamefish when in truth they ate only small to moderate amounts of other fish. Just another scapegoat. Kinda like pike in my area get the blame for everything.

That is one scary fish... :o
-
I cught a 5' gar in Brackish water in southern Louisianna a month ago, I didn't know they could survive there...
-
Dose anyone have any history on this type of fish??? It looks to me like a crossbreed between an aligator and a northern pike!!!
-
Gar can live in brackish water.
Gar aren't related to pike, although they do look somewhat similar.
Here's a link... Gar Information (http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/Gallery/Descript/AlligatorGar/AlligatorGar.html)
-
Gar are a pre-historic carryover. They are the only species in the family Lepisosteidae, and there are 7 different kinds(species) in N. America. Pike are in the Esocidae family with muskie's and pickeral, the only hybrid are tiger muskie, a cross between muskie's and northerns and they are sterile like all hybrids.

In doing some reading on tigers they are able to reproduce but only under absolute ideal conditions. There is a lake in Minnesota I believe that hadn't been stocked with them in many years that guys were starting to catch small tigers so the state did some tests and found the tigers were reproducing. Wish I could remember the site.
Now back to the alligator gars, Field & Stream has an article on them in their latest issue. These fish get blamed for destroying gamefish populations when they only eat the lesser wanted fish. I hate how ignorance seems to be what kills off so many great fisheries.
-
Interesting stuff Mike, haven't heard of that with the tigers.
It's all about good info and educating the puplic and ourselves. Gar are a really cool fish that have been around forever, too bad there unappreciated or little known to alot of people..Besides good anglers that is..
-
I know about the hybrids, but I dont understand why they still can't breed ???
-
It has to do with genetics, the two species have a different genetic pattern and at the point where chromosomes are splitting during cellular development, the reproductive portions of the chromosomes(x,y) can't combine correctly to allow for normal reproduction in the adults produced by the genetic combination. That is a mouthful, but it's the easiest way to explain what happens. When cells split, inside the nucleus of the cells are the genetic patterns(that are unique to every different species, including humans),inside the chromosomes. When they don't split and recombine correctly, development is effected. In fish and other animals reproduction is typically effected(the x and y chromosomes). In humans, a common chromosome deficientcy is the cause for cerebral palsy, where one chromosome is actually missing.
-
Hmmm that does not look like a gar?
-
that things nasty!!!just cut the line!!!!
-
I have been fortunate enough to catch a couple long nose gar they were long and lanky great fighters.
tail dancers like a bass. They fought with the never say die attitude it was great. My feelling is they (Gar all
species)have been around for a very long time and without them and other preditor fish,it would greatly
mess up the eco-system.NO needless KILLING of these beautyfull fish . Catch and release (of course photo
if possible)
Could not imagine one of those alligator gar, would make my day to catch one those important pieces
of our marine eco-system.
