Title: It’s fish
Post by: zwiggles on Jul 28, 2021, 05:03 PM
I haven’t posted much on here recently, but figured I’d throw out some photos. Mostly small stream trout, and warm water species on the fly have taken up my catching time this year. I have put a ton of time into stripers on the fly, but still rolling goose eggs there.

My phone died a horrible death a few months back and I lost most of the spring photos I had taken, but here’s some more recent ones:

Nicely done, appreciate the photos!

I wish I had more photos to share myself but I've been learning how to fish saltwater and it's not easy for newbie like me.

And some stealthy local natives from when the water was high a few weeks back. These gems are certainly urban trout by comparisons to the last, and I didn’t keep them out long enough for good pictures;

I was pleasantly surprised to see some of these fish made it through the severe drought from the past few years. Some of these streams ran almost completely dry last year, and early this year.

Finally got out trolling today with my buddy on the big lake, and it did not disappoint. We ended up missing a few good Salmon right if the bat, and doubles to make for some fun chaos:

(https://i.postimg.cc/Z9hd2Hhp/371-D7-AE1-DF62-445-C-BCBA-DA274463-EEEF.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Z9hd2Hhp)

My salmon went airborne a few times, and I’m still not sure how we landed them both! Mine was just at 4lbs, and his was just under 5lbs.

I’m between feeding rock bass to the eagles I landed another nice laker, and then my buddy got a very nice bow also at 4lbs:

(https://i.postimg.cc/75Zc73R1/D1625691-3-B69-4-ADC-AD39-7852-BD774-D13.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/75Zc73R1)

The laker and the bow both went back swimming, and the bow put up a heck of a fight. The salmon will be on the table tonight.

Everything was over 20”, and we dropped a few more which were good fish too. Pretty much everything was on lead and flies.

And I also have the next week off for a serious fishing adventure. I was invited to head farther north in New England then I have ever been before for some backcountry trout fishing. I will certainly/hopefully have some pictures to add here in about 10 days, and maybe I will even catch a trout or two!

Nice going, Z.  If the trip you mention is the one I'm thinking of, you're gonna have a hell of an adventure for sure.  And, of course, the chance at some really nice wild fish.  Cool that you're able to join that group.  Can't wait for the report and pics.

I was lucky to tie into the biggest stripers I have ever caught this year and would agree.

I have been thinking about this, I seem to get all jacked up each time I start fishing for a new species/fishing a new technique (like trolling, fly fishing, ice fishing, deep sea, etc). I watched a video on “micro fishing” the other day on the ocean, and thought “this could be fun”.

I also saw my first “beach wide” blitz the other evening, and the addiction just keeps going… heading out after work to try and find some more.

So it turns out the NMW is a neat place to say the least. I spent a short week up there to close out the fishing season, and it was my first time in what I think is “northern Maine”.

The scenery, the company (who are entirely responsible for me getting there), and the fishing were outstanding. Every brook trout I caught was bigger then any native/wild one I had caught before. The entire experience was awesome, and I cannot wait to go back again.

I also have been chasing stripers the past few weeks, and also some trout before the NH season closes.

The water in the lakes region is low, but not bad atm. I haven’t seen any big salmon or lake run fish yet, and struck out in browns the two times I went. There are plenty of little guys around though who chased down a dry fly:

My father and I also went out after some stripers after work, and after a slow start of driving without seeing any action we got into a dozen or so little guys who where blowing up tiny bait in the harbor mouth. Tons of fun, but I needed to bring a smaller rod. Hopefully their big momma shows up in the next few weeks.

Got my first skunk tonight going for the striped ones. The last week has been fun chasing them. Met up with Steve H last night, and got into a few, and landed one. He did manage a nice one that put up a good fight on the long rod. Feel free to post it if you want, but it was a chunky fish from what I have seen lately.

Here’s the one I got to hand:

I’ve been off all week and keeping on the fish. Highlight so far was 5 acres of blitzing fish all around me in a yak, and armed with a 9w. Got 10 or so fish once my buddy told me to grab a yak and head there from 8-10. At one point I just sat there and had a smoke and watched the fish going to town with birds and even a seal getting in on the action. Shortly after the blitzes stopped, and I picked up a few more before paddling back to shore just plain exhausted.

My buddy treated me to a real motor boat trip, and I far prefer the gas powered boats vs muscle powered  8)

We fished from 5-9 and landed well over 30 fish between us. Once we found the fish/birds it was basically non stop. All on the fly rod again, and we even got a few top water takes this time!

I got out last weekend on the holiday with my father and cousin to try some bass from kayaks in our local river systems. Late start and took a minute to figure out the kayaks, but I got one schooly and another low 20s bass. My little cousin got another similar sized bass that made the trip:
(https://i.postimg.cc/hQb0FbYq/C3-F5-FD15-A8-E7-47-ED-8-E12-3-DD8-CA904-AD9.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hQb0FbYq)

It was a great way to end a week of vacation, and basically 10 straight days of chasing fish in the salt.

Work this week was chaos, and I did not fish until Friday night. Went out after dinner not expecting much, but on my second spot I hooked into a small bass on the second cast. Then after 6 small bass, I hooked something different, and then it leapt out of the water like a salmon. Sure enough my first Shad ever, and also on the fly came to hand:

(https://i.postimg.cc/4mf0fmQ1/3113-BE0-E-715-B-4-AD0-8781-B8108-EA4578-F.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/4mf0fmQ1)

Fish like this are rare in NH and I was pumped to say the least. Thanks to the gentleman who watched me catch the fish, and took a photo for me to confirm what it was.

I then caught a dozen more small bass in the same spot, on the same dinky black Clouser. Right as the tide seemed to come slack, and the sunlight was gone I hooked 3 good sized bass in a row all in maybe 3’ of water tops. All took me into the backing, and made the night top notch. At this point I will not complain about small bass, but the fight a mid 20s fish has on the fly rod is just the best.

My father and I finished with about 15 keeper haddock and as many shorts. My buddy we went with cleaned up, appropriately so, on his birthday and came home with a limit as did several other fisherman. Everyone caught fish, but a few really slayed today. Beautiful weather, and not working made for a fantastic day. Also saw a big wolffish come to deck for a moment, and a blue shark trying to eat a dogfish which was neat.

Lollll. Exactly. I already have 3 Moose hunts booked and I’d like to hunt for myself.

Also, what are we talking for BIG Bass? Like 50 lbers? I don’t mean to sound Jaded but that’s what it would take for me to be happy  ;D

If you want non stop action with fish to take home, October for tog. If you want fluke and seabass, now until September but although I am already hammering them, no one else is really getting them out my way. Yes, I would take my boat as well and I can take 2 or 3 with me. I have been catching bass for weeks now and I'm over it. Too easy and 3 minutes from my door. Yes spoiled. Fluke, seabass, tog and even bonito and cod are all possible depending on the day, winds and tides.

Got rid of a multi trip skunk streak tonight with the nuclear option. Still slower then a while back, but I picked up two schoolies and missed what was likely a better fish when it went around a piling. The best part of the night was confirming the “no see ums” were warded off with some new gear. I wandered into the fray as several other were getting chased off.

Good to see you're still on 'em Zach!

Bug net suit or something?

Simms solarflex, with the bug stopper (permethrin). Other then the few dozen my nostrils sucked up it was like they weren’t there.

Nice work Pal! Been running the equinox series from Sitka with the same results. You get what you pay for!

1 more tonight with my father before the lightning chased us off. He missed one as well when we got there but it was a nice night until the skies opened up.

Went out last night with Steve H trying to get some stripers, but somehow managed to catch this guy:

First one I’ve ever caught, and even if it was just a baby kinda neat coming in the fly.

Bass fishing has slowed down a bit. Lots of bait around, and I have been surfcasting several evenings, and mornings the past few weeks with not a whole lot to show.

I did have a run in with some pogies a few weeks back for the first time, and hot d**n is that a sight to be seen. A couple weeks back, my buddy got a 33”, and a 38” on the fly from his boat. Just helping land that giant fish was awesome, and seeing them work the bunker was mind boggling. I ended up with a skunk but won’t complain.

I went out with the same guy today, and we did pretty good. I got 3, and he landed about 5 early, and then the fish got fussy. They weren’t moving the bunker much, but we were able to get them dialed in with a “40 count”.

I also got a few more schoolies from shore in the fly, but I think now I’ll mostly concentrate on surfacasting from shore.

Here’s the best one I got today:

You aren't kidding, we had the same experience on Saturday. They were so thick I swear I could have walked on them.
