I'm a muskie newbe, but the convential wisdom is to go big at that time of year. Big cranks and jerks--I like the Salmo models and Jakes. Really big inlines and 1.5oz spinnerbaits are go to's for me. I have a split back saltwater X-rap that I love to throw. Get something huge in topwater also. I'm going to get a 5" Sammy soon.

Hello,
     I got hooked on musky fishing two years ago when I moved to northern Wisconsin, and found out they have fishing leagues.  My favorite lure is the "swimmin joe", and  good old bucktail.

Only fished for them once, caught one on Creek Chub Pikie, perch color. Lots of guys I know like to use the F11 and 13 sized Rapalas, perch and gold/black color. Got a tackle box full of lures after my first trip, haven't been able to go back since then.

My avatar is the Muskie I caught. 49" long, unknown weight. Currently relegated to my basement workshop (just moved)

I've been musky fishing for 16 years now and guided for them for 3 years, I use a bunch of different baits for different applications.
There are so many different techniques to fish for muskie but I will try to cover some of the basics;

When fish are shallow and feeding I will burn bucktails and prop style top water.

If the fish are in a neutral mood and hanging on the edge of cover than I will rely on jerkbaits and crank/twitchbaits, this is how I fish for them the majority of the time because you are trying to get a reaction strike out of the fish.

If the fish are in a negative mood and pretty much hanging tight to the bottom than you can throw large jigs at them but you have to work them slow.

If you are looking to find out what baits to throw than I can tell you that I use Suicks, Eddie baits, Hellhounds, Mantas, Hughs Rivers, and Amma Bamas for Jerk/Glide baits

For Bucktails I use Eagletails, Georgian bayts, M/G spinnerbaits and Grizzlys.

For topwater I use Pacemakers, Poes awakers, Top raiders, and creepers

For Crank/twitch baits I use Jakes, Grandmas, Depthraiders, Triple D's, Double D's, Wileys, Legends and Ernies

For Jigs I use 1 to 1 1/2 oz. Jigheads with reapertails or creature tails

This should get you started.

Good luck and nail a pig, Jeff

If they are chasing stuff down than I would go with a topraider or some other prop style bait.

If they are laid up in the weeds than I would go with a walk the dog bait like the Poe's Jackpot or Stidham Z180.

I love nailing a big musky in skinney water on topwater, that and on a figure 8 is 2 of my favorite strikes in musky fishing.
