I have had good luck vertical jigging in up to 120' of water.  I don't see why it wouldn't work deeper, I just haven't had a need to try deeper.  Any heavy spoon will work, I like the crippled herring.  Also, I jig with one rod and usually drag a big live bait on the bottom with a 1 - 2 oz. slip sinker rig.  Good luck!!
