A trip down memory lane
« on: Jun 07, 2007, 06:12 PM »
A co-worker had a yard sale this past weekend, and they had a bunch of unopened boxes of hockey cards that never sold.  He brought them in, and gave boxes to some of us hockey fans at work.  They originally had been sent to one of his sons by an uncle, and they were never touched.

I took my box over to my babysitter's house - her daughter just finished her first season of hockey, so I gave her the box as her seventh birthday present.

For the next 1/2 hour or more, her dad and I pored through 10 or so packs of 1990 Pro Set NHL cards (first series), and had a blast.  A whole bunch of names which stuck out for me while we went through them.  Here they are, with numbering and descriptions from the set -

16 Glen Wesley
17 Dave Andreychuk
19 Doug Bodger
23 Uwe Krupp
25 Clint Malarchuk
26 Alexander Mogilny RC
27 Daren Puppa
29 Christian Ruuttu
30 Dave Snuggerud RC
34 Doug Gilmour
35 Al MacInnis
36 Brian MacLellan
40 Joe Mullen
42 Joe Nieuwendyk
47 Mike Vernon
82 Grant Fuhr
89 Kevin Lowe
91 Mark Messier
92 Craig Muni
101 Randy Cunneyworth
105 Ron Francis
113 Scott Young
118 Wayne Gretzky
124 Marty McSorley
127 Tomas Sandstrom
136 Ulf Dahlen
142 Mike Modano RC
147 Chris Chelios
148 Shayne Corson
157 Patrick Roy
159 Brian Skrudland
172 Kirk Muller
192 Bryan Trottier
207 James Patrick
216 Ron Hextall
226 Ken Wregget
227 Tom Barrasso
231 Paul Coffey
236 Mario Lemieux
250 Guy Lafleur
257 Joe Sakic
259 Rod Brind'Amour RC
263 Brett Hull
276 Wendel Clark
281 Al Iafrate
286 Ed Olczyk
302 Kirk McLean
311 Kevin Hatcher
332 Moe Mantha
343 Joe Mullen [All-Star]
349 Mark Messier [All-Star]
355 Kirk McLean [All-Star]
361 Paul Coffey [All-Star]
362 Mario Lemieux [All-Star]
364 Phil Housley [All-Star]
367 Ron Francis [All-Star]
368 Chris Chelios [All-Star]
369 Shayne Corson [All-Star]
375 Joe Sakic [All-Star]
377 Bob Murdoch [Jack Adams Award]
387 Boston Bruins [Presidents' Trophy]
397 Mark Messier [Most Valuable Player]
398 Mike Richter RC [Rookie Goals Against Aver]
403 Phil Esposito [Hall of Famer]

It was a blast just looking at haircuts and jerseys.  The black and yellow Canucks...  North Stars.... Nordiques... Whalers....  The white Capitals with the sticks....  Her dad and I were almost tempted to only allow her to open cards when we're both there, just so we don't miss anything.   8)

Just wanted to share with everyone....

No gum.  Instead there were cards in each pack worth 10 cents off the purchase of Pro Set NHL merchandise.  They expired in 1992.

She opened the whole rest of the box this morning.  I didn't get to flick through many of them when I got there tonight, but there was an Alexander the Great rookie card near the top of the box.   :thumbup_smilie:
