I asked because I'm pondering a vacuum impregnating system.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Just out of curiosity, what are the blanks you're waiting for?

They are maple.
And the dye is fire engine red.

The theme is red.

The reels are Pflueger Presedent XT's, which have red on them.
And the thread will all be red, but he's going to do some chrome sprinkled into the red thread as an accent.

My Lund is red.

I like red.

Other woods he has used are -

box elder, cherry, walnut, and koa.

We selected the maple because they appeared to show the most grain patterns with the bright red dye I wanted.
Hopefully it works out that way.

All take dye to varying degrees. Some more porous than others. But the vacuum system allows for some variation.

Best part about it is the ability to stabilize the piece with resins after it's dyed.

Has any one priced the kits for dying wood if so what are they running for a kit??

Looking at vacuum pumps they range for good 150 to 500.00  but for harbor freight they run 95 to 150  here's the links to them..
Trying to figure if it cheaper to make the vaccum set up or buy a kit..

Have Jeff check out this link.
https://nvwoodwerks.com/my-double-dye-stabilizing-process/

Good info on the process and equipment needed. I'd do it, but I'm flat out of space for any more hobbies.

just sent it to him.

A friend loaned him a vacuum system to try.
Looks like a pressure cooker with a small vacuum pump connected to it.

That's about it. Probably a converted pressure paint pot.

Next he needs to add a Celtic Knot to the reel seat.

That would be pretty unique.

He has done this, but needs more practice.   ;)
He has done it on burl cork also.

It's all a matter of accuracy and repetitive alignment. Each wafer must be the exact width of the blade cut...each cut must be exactly the same in angle and position. Otherwise, the knot grows or shrinks with each consecutive cut and gets(as we woodworkers say) "wonky".

I'd like to know how he could produce a Celtic Knot on a round blank. It's geometrically improbable.

I spoke out of turn Bob.
You are correct.
He has been experimenting with a lot of shapes like that.
Espe4cially on the less expensive cork.
Also trying his hand at weaves on the thread.
My point was that he still needs more experience.
He was showing me some things the other day, like the knot.
I'll try and get the url and send it to you.
You will enjoy it.

I spent the day in Kenmore and Lockport today. A remembrance for my Bride's sister who passed a couple weeks ago. Very snowy up there. I was happy to get back to good old Macedon Ny.
