Title: Daaaaa Ditch
Post by: westernmas on Jun 22, 2015, 07:13 AM
Went to the Cape like a good son and did a bunch of yard work for my father. On my way to the Cape Friday night I stopped at the canal and managed one schoolie. Saturday was spent working and then I hit the canal Sunday morning on my way home and finally managed a keeper!!!  It was right at 28 and I had no way of keeping it cold so I let it see another day. The fish were definitely moving through all morning and I got it on a top water plug, a first for me.

I wish I lived closer too.  The 2 hours to the canal and then an hour to the house is doing some damage on the wallet.  They need a hybrid truck.  I don't do any towing or anything along those lines so the power/speed really doesn't matter.  I like having the bed of the truck to throw my yak/canoe and all my gear into.

The exact reason i bought a Hybrid hatch back. Lay the seats down and there is a ton of storage (and its locked up) yak goes on top. Car gets 60-65mpg. I can drive the 1.5-2hrs (ea way) 165mile round trip to the salt for about $7 in gas.

Post by: Baitbucket on Jun 22, 2015, 04:18 PM
3.30 hrs for me each way.  If I let the turbo boost I get maybe 6 to 8 mph.  If I drive normal maybe 19-20.  Its worth having the hp and subsequent gas burning!  (mines a wagon)  Current tune has it around 330 whp!  Perfect for getting to the salt fast!  Should be close to 400hp by ice time! (Im a car nut/mechanic when im not fishing)

The speed is nice, thats for sure. I took the money i saved in gas the last couple seasons and bought 2 new Shimano reels and built myself a $200 custom rod. I felt that was a better way to spend my money than literally burning it (in my gas tank). Never having gas be my limiting factor on trips is nice too.

The need for speed is real. LOL. The faster The better. At least that s what all us car nuts think.

I seem to be missing something, but then again I am no gear head... Will's car goes faster than is legal and your car goes faster than legal, so I don't get the "Need for speed"... Hay, to each his own, I don't understand how the guys out in the Mid-West get all excited about sunfish either...

Yup, been there, done that. Had a Subaru WRX STI w/305hp turbo charged 4cyl, all wheel drive, 0-60 in 4.3 seconds, top speed of 152mph (when it would shut down, tested and confirmed).

Sold it because in any kind of traffic its useless and 15mpg sucks. Oh yah, then theres the whole speeding ticket thing too. Nothing will delay and put a damper on a fishing trip like a speeding ticket..

I love knowing i can hop in my car now, cruise to the salt going 80, and know its gunna cost me less than 10$ in gas to do it lol. If i wanna "beat" people there, I just leave earlier.

Bought the car used from a kid that worked for Subaru. He had made a few modifications to it.

As for driving a hybid now. Its safe to assume I grew out of the "need for speed" phase when i was in my early 20's.

Jeez that is a pig.  Care to share what you got it on?  I also see you have a casting pointer finger protector (I think that's the technical name).  I sliced my finger real good last Friday and man does it suck to cast with a slice on the tip of your finger.

What do you think is the most consistent lure/bait for the canal?  I've tried a ton but I never catch fish on the same lure.  Schoolies seem to hit stickbaits like SP Minnows and Bombers but I've never got anything large on those.  Savages and top water for pigs?

That SP minnow is one of the best lures for the canal......and at 9$......price cant be beat. If someone asked me...what should I bring to the canal........  I'd say.....U NEED a green mac savage sand eel.....Yeah.... I'm on their staff...so you think I'd have to say that. NOT TRUE......this has EASILY been my number one canal producer and I fished them hard way before.

 1...savage sand eel
2... sp minnow  in silver or green mac
 3... white bucktail
4... canal style (flat bottom) wooden pencil popper.........Maybe spend a lil extra on this one.... get something nice ( guppy, lefthook, etc)

Head to the canal with these 4 and you should really be looking good. If I could only pick one...... Savage sand eel.... It can be jigged...or just bounced.........can be swam in at mid column......or u can reel it in right on top.

PIGS   are almost NEVER found on top......... I only have one fish under my belt over 40# from top water...and that just happened last year. If u want large...... go deep....... when the canal is boiling with fish and everyone is catching on top..... I'm below them....... looking for the larger of the school!

If anyone is interested...... I am Captain for Team Mass...in the state striper wars. A month long tournament to see what state has the best striper fisherman.  ALL other states are done fishing....just Mass and Maine are left (we pick our own 30 days). Team NY is in the lead with 770ish inches and done fishing.  Team Mass has until July 15th. We accumulated 500 inches in the first week! Check it out...........catch and release tournament. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Surfcasting-Inc-State-Striper-Wars/254242661408560?fref=ts

Well it sounds like I am on the right track.  Now I just have to put in some hours.  I've yet to get one on the savages but will definitely throw them more after your suggestions.  It is just so hard to see fish busting at the surface and not turn to something for the upper section of the water column.

That holds true only until one point in a canal fishermans career. When they fish next to capedeer/fish and see the difference between a 15# top water hit on a pencil or seeing colby pull multiple 30#+ right next to you on jigs. Same school just a very different but proven big fish tactic.

Kids a dedicated fishing machine.

Glad I am lucky to have time on the ditch with him.

Keep it up brother!

Colby, have you ever tried the Bill Hurley soft plastics. He has one that looks alot like the Savage Eel, but much cheaper.

Colby is a machine for sure.  I like to think I give him a run for the money when I'm down there but we fish much differently.  When we team up the bass run (no literally they do!)

My favorites that have taken a few thousand pounds of bass:

1. Ron z 5 oz 10" black tail.
2.  Dead eel on a jig
3. Stick Shadd (pb was on one.  52" released)
4. 9" tsunami shad.

I can fish with just those and do very well.   Hurleys work well too but some nights I've had it where the eel and hurley get ignored while the ron-z gets blasted and vice versa.  I've landed a few up to he high 30's on them.  Replace his head with one with a heavy duty mustad to avoid hook breakage on big fish.

x10000000!  Media reports will lead you to think the place bpils over with 40's every morning....I'd trust what this guy wrote above as highly accurate.  Once you learn to do it right you can pull bass much more consistantly there.

Been here at the ditch since Friday . Getting out in between family stuff. 2 so far. 30" and 32" both on the savage eel. Mackeral color. Killed some time bait fishing today at the west end. Something I rarely do. Was hoping for a couple sea bass for the table. Managed a tautog and small sea robin. Back to jigging just before dark. Pics when I get home.

Historically speaking the tides this weekend lead to good fishing.  Last year was the first year in 4 that I didn't get a bass over 30 pounds.  I've logged on July 5th that size or larger every other year for a few in a row.
