Merc 50 hp 4-stroke bown/white wire

2002 Mercury 50hp 4 stroke

On the front top of my motor there is a brown wire and a brown/white wire that both come out of the same harness. They have male and female ends and look like they should be connected but they were apart when I lifted the cover off. I don't know if they should be together or not. I think they might be for an optional trim gauge, which I don't have on my boat, but I am not sure.  Anyone know what these are and should they be connected?

The brown and brown/white wires are for a gauge option for other model boats or for an upgrade for your boat. DO NOT connect them together....they are a hot wire and a ground wire!! :o Trim gauge wires are a green wire and a blue wire! It ain't broke...don't fix it!!! ;D!!--KP 8)
