whats the temp of outboard water stream supposed to be

Had my 1968 merc 200 20hp since 1998. I've never felt the temp of the water stream before. Last weekend I felt it after running the motor 5 min. or so. I couldn't hold my hand on the stream it was to hot. My home hot water temp is around 132 and it didn't feel that hot but close. So is it normal for the water stream to be hot or should it be fairly cool.

Mac Attack:
You can touch 120 water.
After that the time you can touch it is less as the temp rises.

Now to answer your actual question.
The water is too hot coming out of that motor.
You need to get it cooler.
Pump and/or thermostat.
I would replace both actually.

The tell tale on my '94 25hp Merc barely ever gets above the water temp of the lake. Maybe slightly warmer, but barely noticeable.

My 6hp kicker the tell tale seems to be zero warmer than the lake water. My 150 I have never felt, no idea.

The water comes out right when it starts, no thermostat to open I would guess. The exit hole on the bottom cowl sometimies would plug so I drilled the hole a little bigger(3/32) a few years back it hasn't pluged since. Making the hole larger should let more cooler water pass thru the cooling system I would think.

Its a 50 year old motor so may not have a thermostat. I looked thru all the parts diagrams in this link for it and I don't see a thermostat.

 I'll have to remember to get a thermometer and check it.
