Hats??
« on: Jul 01, 2018, 03:50 AM »
Being of the follicly challenged type
I have to wear a hat all the time, about 30 seconds without one and my head will get burnt to a crisp.

Anyone have any recommendations for a hat that's light, and will breathe, something I can dunk in the water and wring out and will last at least one season??

Thanks

I'll check in often on this thread.

Several years ago I picked up a hat similar to this at Cabelas.  I liked it for the most part but much like my hair I have no idea where it went.  Now I wear a straw hat.

I like the trucker style mesh back with thin nylon mesh. Standard ball cap, thin and cheap. Doesn’t do much for the ears, so I wear a cowboy from tractor supply. Rattlesnake skin pattern. 8)
At the mouth of the river at Sebago in the Spring, it's East to West unless you want a beating from the rest! ;D ;D

Thanks for the responses....I've tried the regular ball caps with the mesh backs and I get burned right through  the mesh.

I'm going to order one of the Simms and give it a whirl...thanks Baydog!!

A sunburn on the crown is something I had never encountered, nor thought I would, until a trip to St. Lucia three years ago.  I thought I had a thick head of hair but somehow got scorched.  Guess I got lucky to make it through 42 years without an issue - combination of being in the tropics and pool time got me.

I have a Stetson straw hat w/ 3" brim - light weight and it allows a good amount of airflow.  Can't dunk it though.  I have another made of a lightweight green fabric, which doesn't allow air to pass through but can be dunked.  Vary which I wear based upon weather.   Think I got both at Cabela's.

There are other style like boonie hat etc.. I suggest lighter color so they don't get to hot on your head quickly?

Say what you want....I prefer a big straw hat. If it's too hot, dunk it in the water and it'll cool your dome for hours. Cheap and effective, breathable, natural fiber, lightweight and ....it has the added bonus of keeping flies out of your ears. Not the buzzing kind, but the fly on the end of your fly line...as it comes zipping by your head after a lousy cast. Spritz it with a little bug juice and the buzzing flies and such will just leave you alone.

Mine cost about $5 at Wally World. They last 2-3 seasons of fishing, gardening, mowing the lawns and just hanging out.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

What about a cold snap cooling towel under a ball cap?? Leave it hang long to cover the back of your neck..
