Thought I'd better start my picture thread here...
We went fly fishing for smallies yesterday after work -- my absolute favorite. We were wading in a little river about 10 miles outside of Madison. Caught about twenty nice little smallies in 2.5 hours. This guy was about the average. He came on a deerhair popper that I bounced off that water level gauge in the background.

Then I got surprised by this largemouth while quartering a streamer under a downed Cottonwood. There was no room in the chest pack for a tape, so I knew I wouldn't be entering a tourney fish. I guess I should make room from now on because I really wanted to measure this fish. I marked her length on the rod and measured when I got back to the car. Somewhere between 20-22" I think. Would've been nice to get her before she spawned. She bit on an conehead magnum double bunny - chinchilla and white. My best bass on a fly.

We had scattered storms last night and this morning. Here's a cool shot from the drive home.

It's about time you got a picture thread going bud! Great pics and that's an excellent Bass...must have been a blast on the fly rod. WTFG ;D :D

Looks like a good day fishin'! Nice bass man!
What's in the hydration pack on your back? Don't even say it's aqua!

The bladder was empty because this was only a short trip and the temps were only in the low eighties, I think. That thing has been a godsend on day-long wades in the nineties. Filled with, I'm sorry to admit, nothing but ice in the morning. :'(
I has however been filled with considerably stronger libations on "excursions" to Lambeau and Camp Randall. 8)

I haven't been posting much here because I've pretty much been doing the same thing most nights. Smallies on the fly are my favorite and I've been sticking to it with good success. Last night was more of the same, but just about as perfect as you could ask for. Worth another update.
The smallies in this spot average somewhere between 14-17" with the occasional 20". I know there are 5+ pounders in the lakes that this river runs between, but I'm still hoping to run across one in this smaller water. I posted yesterday about a dink smallie jumping out of the water to hit the fly as it rocketed past on the false cast return. This happened twice more last night. It still amazes me that they can even come close to it.
I got there around 6:30 and fished well past dark. It's very cool to fish topwaters alone on the river after dark. Not too good for the heart when they hit, but it keeps you awake ;D
I lost count after twenty or so fish. They were VERY aggressive and easy to get on top. I might have gotten as many as double that, not sure. Nor do I really care. It was just awesome to be part of such a memorable night. Wading/stumbling back downstream in the dark is not may favorite activity, but it was well worth it.
I obviously didn't take pics of all the fish, but I think my bass thumb speaks for itself.
Here's the result of the first cast -- white and chartreuse Whitlock style deerhair popper

Sounds like another nice night out for you. I'm going to do some topwater bucketmouth fishing after work tonight down at the "bass pond". I'm hoping for a good evening topwater bite. 8)
I'm hoping for you too. I'll send you some good topwater mojo brainwaves. :pinch: :pinch:

nice fish on the fly rod- my thumb and fingers look just like that after lipping cats all day.

We got out on Lake Michigan on Saturday and Sunday. In a normal year we would've been fishing for more than a month now, but the weather and various mechanical problems have been conspiring against us. The planets finally aligned and let us out of the harbor.
A few of the bigger tourneys start in the upcoming weeks so we really needed to get some fish, both to boost confidence and to start building a pattern. We were successful on both accounts. We launched at 4:00 am and had our limit of cohos and chinooks by 8:30 on Sat. That's not exactly burning them up, but it was good for the confidence. We had a couple doubles and one triple in which we were able to land all but one fish. It was good to get the "boat dance" back -- passing rods, going over and under each other, talking through crossed lines, not getting hyper, we hadn't gotten to practice that stuff since last September.
Sunrise on Saturday

The cleaning station was PACKED. Nobody else was even close to a limit. That's a good feeling going into a tournament. We were more that a mile from the popular spots and I don't think anyone saw us, which is an even better feeling. 8)

Now I know this is going to surprise some of you, but since we finished so fast in the morning, we decided to take the afternoon and fly fish for some smallies. We went to a sweet little Lake Michigan tributary that I haven't been to since my rock skipping and frog chasing days. We didn't get any fish but it was fun to return to my childhood stomping grounds. It was also good to see that this little river is still in fine shape. It would've been nicer to land a few smallies, but who can complain after the morning we had.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi25.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc77%2FXrhino%2Fwhiteriver.jpg&hash=04e189c14c52e24746389c950150a115)
On Sunday morning we decided to fish in the more popular spots, both to check them out and to cover our tracks from Saturday. We caught about half as many smaller fish.
It was a melee out there with boats crossing each other and spooling each other's rods. I think I heard some new words on the radio. :nono: The auto pilot took a dump and by the time we realized we were going in a circle, half of our lines were tangled. After a few hours of trying to fix it, it looks like it might be something on one of the circuit boards by the motor. I gave it to friend who builds and repairs circuit boards at work. He said he'd take a look. :cursing: It will suck to not have next weekend if we start getting into doubles and triples again  The coolest part of Sunday morning was when we almost got boarded by pirates. ;) This tall ship appeared out of the fog right after sunrise. I had my eye out for Kiera Knightley, but she was nowhere to be found. ;D

We fish out of Kenosha in the very SE corner of Wisconsin. The biggest fish was the Chinook I was holding. We didn't put a scale on it, but I'd say it was around 14lbs. They can run bigger, but that's a good start in my estimation.

Thanks! You should brave the east side of our state and get to Lake Michigan. It's a blast!

Yeah, the canoe trip was a great walk down memory lane and the tallship made our morning in Sunday.

There aren't too many of us bass/fly guys around. More than there used to be, but I still don't see that many of us. That's the great thing here, we wouldn't know each other existed if it weren't for MFF.

Too bad we can't drink beer over a PM. ;D I'll let you know when the tourney's are over and we have a spot open on the boat. Once that happens, you'll be more than welcome.

My friend Brian and I went to our fishing trailer this weekend for our annual Mississippi smallie excursion.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi25.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc77%2FXrhino%2Fold14.jpg&hash=c852badae76a968acaafcf3a28f87910)
We had quite the little adventure in an area they call the chutes. It's basically hundreds of little islands where the Black river runs into the Mississippi to form Lake Onalaska. There's tons of water with lots of braided currents, sandbars, rocks, and stumps -- basically smallie heaven.
To make a five hour ordeal short, we got very "turned around." We've been going up there for years without a problem, but the water was just high enough to make everything look a little different. It was pouring for the first hour, just to add to the fun. I was out of the boat countless times to pull us over a sandbar to what we hoped was they way out, only to find another dead end. I stepped off the edge of one bar and barely clambered back into the bow. We were never really in serious trouble and actually had a good time laughing at ourselves. Brian kept spouting made-up headlines like, "TWO FISHERMEN FOUND CLINGING TO ISLAND" -- When asked what they needed they replied 'beer and deet.' " ;D
I took this one when we finally found Gibb's chute, our way home.

No smallies on this trip, but we got a good story out of it. I'm sure that it will become more and more perilous in the telling, until finally, years from now, we will have actually spent two nights surviving on river water and cat tail roots. ;)
Later we decided to stay in the lake and fish for gills. We didn't find the big ones, but the ones we did find were very cooperative. We caught them two at a time more often than not. As you can see color made no difference. We ended up throwing what I would consider really big bluegill stuff to catch the moderate sized ones we kept. Beetle spins, little cleos, kastmasters, roadrunners, all the stuff you would normally throw at schooling white bass. It was a blast.

I caught one nice crappie that warranted a minor celebration.

We sorted through the dinks and kept 15, which resulted in a nice little pile of meat.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi25.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc77%2FXrhino%2Fmeatpile.jpg&hash=c7e74f0ae489ff1b5b1df869beb7410d)
We'll be back up in September, hopefully for a few more smallies and little less adventure.

Yeah, I know. If you look at the pic of Brian holding the two doubles, you can see the Garmin laying on the drink cooler. But that was after our little exploration. By the time we remembered to get it out in the chutes we were too far gone. :cookoo: If we'd been using it the whole time we could've back tracked, but we aren't that swift, apparently.

we just bought the same boat- hate how the deep v is too deep- mite doo the plywood/carpet/seats thing

I took a couple of non-fishing fellow exrhinos out for some channel cats on Friday night. It was almost 80 degrees, humid, raining off and on, buggy, and very muddy. We spent as much time taking off and putting on raingear as we did anything else. :D They loved every minute of it.
The action was just fast enough to keep everyone interested, but not fast enough to be considered a stellar night. We fished from 8:00 to midnight with about 4-5 hits an hour. The fish ran pretty small for this spot but they didn't know the difference. They got the hang of things pretty quickly, but it was fun to watch them jump and stumble around on the uneven ground when a clicker went off. ;D
At one point Spanky wanted to try and cast a baitcaster and I thought it would be a good show so I let him go ahead. I wasn't disappointed. Of course he snagged the brush behind him resulting in a huge backlash, stinkbait in his hair, and he even somehow managed to break one of the paddles of the reel handle. I didn't mind at all. I got the backlash out pretty quickly and watching that little catastrophe will be well worth ordering a new part. I'm just glad they went out with me.

Brian and I went to our trailer in Onalaska for the annual gill trip and to try for flatheads. The gills ran much smaller than average and mother nature prevented us from getting across the lake to the river for the cats, but we had a good time anyway. The gills, while small this year, were everywhere and we got in a little smallie fishing in as well. I invited Pikeguy, but he wussed out. ;)
It's hard to see here, but they were coming two at a time on most casts again.

My share of the spoils. We sorted through hundreds of fish to get these marginal keepers, but at least there's meat in the freezer.

Why do the rods always end up in a massive clusterbomb by the end of the trip? :-\

Tell me about it. We have to bring everything because there could be anything from gills to pike going. It's a pain. :P

::) ::) Thanks boys! I'm spoiled on gills. I'll try to dig up and scan some pics from years past when we were hauling in the big, dark bump-heads. It's really a gill factory over there during open water, but we've never done squat through the ice. :P

I always think we're going to do well, but when we get there it never works. That may have something to do with the fact that we have a self-imposed rule of no booze at the trailer during open water -- beer only. That rule becomes a little more flexible in winter, but so does our wake up time. :-X 8)
I could use all the help I can get on the ice over there, just bring your liver. ;D

Don't worry about my Liver...I have a little wagon it stays in and follows me around wherever I go. It tried to run away once...so I tied it on to that. I still have a soft spot or two on it that I'm trying to get rid of ;D ;)
