Based on the black spots on the dorsal I'm going to say sauger. It's not a saugeye or a Walleye  ;)

what the *&%^*&^  is a zander anyway!??? ???
Title: Re: name that species?
Post by: Niffken on Jun 03, 2006, 12:25 PM
The scientific name for zander  is Sander lucioperca (or Stizostedion lucioperca), and it is a relative of perch.

I think the pic in the original post is a sauger.

That strange fish looks to be an abyss species, dark coloration, large eyes, perhaps a snaggletooth fish. :-\

Some sort of Ratfish or Chimaera , not certain of the exact species.
They are a deep sea primitive relative of the shark.

Sauger all the way  ;D
Title: Re: name that species?
Post by: nacator on Jun 01, 2009, 03:56 AM
[Well, it has all the classic sauger characteristics. the eyes, spots on the dorsal fin thinner body than the walleye. twelve spines on fin as opposed to 14-16 for a walleye. I live close to a lake that has a very pure strain of saugers, and that looks like a classic to me.
