Post by: bigredfishing on Mar 13, 2005, 09:38 PM
I like seeing nice taxidermy work, so lets see what ya got!
I will start it off with mine.

this is the wall in my living room, the top left is my 10lb susquehenna walleye, and top right is my 14lb steelhead, the bottom is my fathers 20lb 7oz steelhead - not pictured is my fathers 7lb finger lakes bow and my 8lb st. lawrence river walleye.

great mounts guys. They are simply amazing. Are those all skin mounts or are there any mounts that are the recreation kind. I am interested in the recreation mounts do to the fact that I like to release all of my fish but wondered how they looked compared to the skin mounts. Thanks and keep those great mounts comin. I know I sure am gonna try and get a few nice lookin fish like all of yours.

I like the whole graphite replica idea, but I don't have any problem with guys making skin mounts.  I've seen some very good replicas and some really poor ones of both types. Those are all some really nice mounts, I don't have any, I have a few pictures that I like a lot and when I'm older and have more $$$ that I may get a graphite replica or two of a bass and a lake trout.

I have a question for those who have skin mounts of fish, like I mentioned earlier in this thread their are two mounted walleye that have been sitting around gathering dust, I would like to hang them on the wall, but they have a thick layer of dust on them from lack of cleaning over the years.   What would be safe and good to use to clean these mounts off without damaging them?
Ive been thinking a good damp cloth would do it, but does anybody use any sort of cleaning agent or liquid?

all mine are skin mounts except for the big steelhead -thats fiberglass i think.the taxidermist made the mold for it from the fish itself -you can see every mark and scale that was on the original fish -the replica looks closer to what the actual fish  looked like than my skin mounts do and it will last a lot longer. it costs a little more for replica's but its well worth it-i'd never go back to skin mounts

Post by: d_balm24 on Mar 28, 2005, 06:47 PM
Those are great I can't even tell the difference between the skin mounts and the replica mounts. I always woundered if the replicas were as nice now I know that they are just as good and you will have the replica for a lot longer.Simply amazing mounts guys.

Cleaned off this one, 12 pounds.  My brother caught it a few years back, in 12 FOW at noon  ???     He was drifting a golden shiner.     My dad landed another one this size at basically the same spot at the same time of day.   I believe that one went 12 pounds too.

very nice collection of mounts... on thing i noticed though that caught my attention enough to scroll back through and check... all their mouths are "OPEN" !.....lol  not a big deal by any means, just though it was strange that every one was!

***well, i guess its just me! i went back through the whole thread and realized that every fish mount shown here has its mouth open. i dont own any mounts, so i am no judge but i assume now that it is popular to show the mouth open as it probably shows the teeth and whatever and makes for a better display!***

Here is the only two mount's that I have on the wall at this time. The first is a native brownie my dad got many years ago in a small stream where there is any trout :whistling:. The second is of a 31" eye I got in Canada about 7 years ago, I got it in july so it only weighed a little over 7lbs.

Dr. IceGeek - I think the mount you did looks better than the first one, more life like, WOW!  My only suggestion might be to fully extend the dorsal since that seems to be the more common posture for perch.  Colors look great and the eye is very good.  Most professionally done fish mounts I see look very artificial when it comes to the white bellies of the fish.  Almost like they use too bright of a white color and extend it too far up the body.

Post by: Dr. IceGeek on Apr 29, 2005, 09:00 AM
Bobman,
Thanks for the kind words and feedback.   I too noticed that lots of people use WAY too much white on the bellies of many fish.  I tried to use many layers of colors to give the paint a little more depth but not overdo it either.  I really appreciate the constructive criticism though,  of course I'm still learning quite a lot, and I am certainly making mistakes, but I try and learn from each mistake I make.  Thanks again

Monophil,
I was kind of thinking something along those lines.  Art for me was always a release (in addition to hunting and fishing) and it seems to be the perfect combination between two things that I really like to do.  I picked up a book last year and started reading about fish taxidermy and then scoured the internet to find info.  Although it seems that many taxidermists aren't really willing to share their knowledge, so much of it has just been trial and error.  Again, I appreciate the kind words.  At some point maybe I'll open something on the side......

Here's my first mount, which I got back the other day. It's a 26", 7 lb. walleye that I caught through the ice on Oneida Lake this past winter (at the January IceShanty Get-Together). This is a trophy for this lake. The fish has a hanger on the back, but I think I'm going to have it put on a plaque.

Zach,
Very Nice walleye!  I've caught a lot of walleyes out of Onieda but even close to that monster.   As far as the hanger on the back...give it some time.  I think it will grow on you.  I don't really like the looks of fish on plaques as it seems to detract from the fish and also tends to make them look darker for some reason.

It is a sheep you see there.  It is some country tyoe panneling the wife picked out about 15 years ago when we bought the house.  The fish were caught on Lake Ontario while fishing with Fish Doctor Charters.  The rainbow was caught while comming into port on the Oswego River and weighed 19 lb 10 oz.  We have two more mounts of fish we have caught there that will be picked up later this month.

I got my fish mounts form AK back a month or two ago and am unsure if I posted the pics or not.

Here is my 16 inch grayling, I caught bigger, I think 20 or 21 inches was the biggest, but a 16 incher at $21 adn inch is a lot cheaper then a 20 inch fish.     Anyways this one had amazing colors to it.      I caught it on a hike back into some mountains abotu 3 or 4 miles back,  way up and in, back into brown bear territory.      Its a memory I will never ever for get
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv50%2Fdeerslayer07%2FDSCF1917.jpg&hash=687818bc89374b798aa5b7f18c9294a8)

This Dolly Varden, I caught out of the stream I lived next to, I wanted a pink salmon, a male in full spawning colors, but was lookign at a 20-30 + inch fish at $21 and inch, jsut not affordable for me.     So I went with a fat 15-16 inch dollie (caught then up to 24 inches but they were scrawny and early, ((pre pink run)))

Here are some of my mounts.  I have been playing around with fish taxidermy for the last 2 years and these are some pics of fish I have completed.  My job is kind of stressful at times and if I don't have the time to go fishing I can always go down into the basement for a few minutes and unwind by screwing around with taxidermy.  Some day I may start something on the side, but for now it's nothing more than a hobby.  I decided to consolidate all of the pics in one thread here.  As always feedback is appreciated and always welcome.

Here's a pic of a pumpkinseed I caught out of honeoye while trolling for walleyes this past summer....my first attempt at a sunfish
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv111%2FIceGeek%2Fpumpkinseed002.jpg&hash=cfee779544bd7f668dcd35ffaa3a3070)

Here's a mount I did for my wife.  It's here biggest perch at just over 13"
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv111%2FIceGeek%2Ffinal012A.jpg&hash=624b0707f7775bfbd0d63b39a290fcc1)

Here's a black crappie I did for my friend for his birthday.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv111%2FIceGeek%2FCF12.jpg&hash=648010a2345d2568e857e59f2c68aded)

A stringer mount of perch I did for a fishing buddy for his 50th birthday.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv111%2FIceGeek%2Fstringer002.jpg&hash=865f58b3d58e9a121a551970a555a81f)
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv111%2FIceGeek%2Fstringer004.jpg&hash=a8da9308756ae3e907958a4346d23123)

My first attempt at doing a fish in fiberglass.  I made a 2 part mold of the fish and then laid it up in fiberglass, put the 2 halves together and then painted it
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv111%2FIceGeek%2Ffinal001A.jpg&hash=1120df25f93eda01019db48f04317088)

Here's my second attempt at a fish in fiberglass.  This one is a landlock salmon in it's silver/chrome coloration. I used the same technique as with the smallmouth, but getting a realistic silvery paint job was difficult....I also layered alot of irredescent paint on it, although it doesn't show up well in the pic
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv111%2FIceGeek%2Flandlock003.jpg&hash=1f4276e42cfb8c58e8c749589f781039)
and up close detail of the landlock
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv111%2FIceGeek%2Flandlock004.jpg&hash=b0bfc980df8421359ab97a566514deb2)

Finally a skinny river walleye I completed.  First walleye mount so I didn't want to ruin a slob so I picked this skinny guy to experiement with....the colors turned out nice in my opinion....
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv111%2FIceGeek%2Fwalleye007.jpg&hash=471c06b2805ce013984ba68da9e984cd)
and up close scale detail and fin details
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv111%2FIceGeek%2Fwalleye008.jpg&hash=297cb62b9c5aab30df357d83b6d54bcf)

As always in my quest to improve I would appreciate any criticism or comments you might have.

Here's a fiberglass mount of a domestic rainbow I caught last year on opening day of trout season.  I made the molds and laid it up in fiberglass last year but haven't had the time to paint it yet until today.  It's around 25 inches and came out of a finger lakes trib.  It's still drying on the paint stick....after that I will put a hanger on it and put it on the wall.....Let me know what you guys think!  First pic is in a room on the floor with the flash on,...second is in natural light.  Feedback is always appreciated.

The reason the pics is so bad is because one of my babysitters actual sat on it LOL and the mount was done by some one that had never done one before

Like Dr. Ice, I also dabble with taxidermy as a hobby.  Here was my first attempt at skin mount northern taken by a friend of mine out of Sodus Bay.  i have also done a few bass and trout but can't seem to find any other photos.

Gump,
Nice work.  I find it really satisfying to work on taxidermy when I don't have enough time to go fishing and I still need to blow off a little steam.  It's a nice combination of things I like to do (both art and fishing)  Keep up the good work.

I'm just wondering what you guys/gals do to clean your mounts?  I have tried air in a can, and I don't want to use a rag, any hints/tricks?

My uncle taught me how to do it. Its not bad, it is however better when you have someone show you how to do it. Go to vandykes website and order one of their fish mounting kits. It comes with pretty specific directions. Know your fish anatomy though. Any other ?'s just pm me

Hookjaw,

I started browsing the web and found WASCO taxidermy supply company.  They have an online catalog at:

www.taxidermy.com (http://www.taxidermy.com)

I just ordered a couple beginner books from them along with a starter kit and had at it.  The also offer a huge selection of how-to videos as well.  Should find everything you need at this site.

Also check out their awards section of their website.  Talk about some awesome mounts!!  Take a look at some of the winners...
