There are outfitters in the states in texas i believe that bowhunt for aligator gar, i watched some streaming video of them hunting them at night didn't look like the arrows had any problems penatrating.

When I was living in Louisiana, the state record came from a chain gang while they were cleaning out the irrigation canals. They spotted a large alligator gar and asked permission to fish for it but were denied. The individual in charge did give them permission to catch it if they could, and they did. I remember it was over seven feet long and I forgot how much it weighed. They relocated it to one of the larger bayous and released it.
Bow fishing is common in Louisiana, and there is no shortage of guides. They go out at night on large fan boats with huge spot lights all around them. Once you see a fish you shoot it, they don't target any particular species.

Holly molly those are big alligator gar.
I wouldn't want them to grab you, at the minimum you would probably lose a finger or two.
I bet they were a blast to catch and land, defiantly a extra large steel leader would be in order.

Those are small alligator gar. I lived in MS and you would cast near a fallen tree and watch it swim away. 6-8' is common from what I saw. Just monsters.

Those gar are some of the best gamefish in the world. They can grow up to 13 feet long and 350 pounds, though anymore one over 150 is big one.
Sadly they have been horribly mismanaged, almost wiped out in some areas. They always got the blame for eating all the gamefish when in truth they ate only small to moderate amounts of other fish. Just another scapegoat. Kinda like pike in my area get the blame for everything.
