The night I didn’t want to go but joe said the weather was gonna come in later.
On the way to the water I stop for take out dinner and pull up near launch to eat. I just finish eating when a guy says the water is jumping. I look and I see pogies. Grab the snagger and couple casts I get one. 20 minutes nothing takes him. I give pogie away and head to launch. Joe arrived we launched I head for them he got some spots he wants to hit first. I get on them call him. He gets there snagged one. I snag 2nd one boooom. Like chores girls the water jump left in front of him. I said you know what that means.”something eating these pogies” 150’ circle comes to a boil with us in it. Pogies flying giant stripers flying out of the water after them. Then the snagged pogie pole in hand gets smashed (3oz weighted hook). I set the hook and game on. As others have taught us it’s about drag thanks it was what landed this fish.
The fish dove down in channel and didn’t want to come up. I dragged her in shallow to get
Up. Felt like hour but 5 minutes in and I still hadn’t seen the fish. I’d get her up a little and back down it would go. Fish was 46” and 36lbs on boga gripper.
Joe story. He thinks the boil is a whale bubble netting the pogies. So gets his line all tangled up. Fish smashes his pogie. He is in a heritage angler kayak 9.5’ft. Ten minutes to untangle before he ever start to reel in fish. Fish 45”@ 30lbs=kayak 114”. 35lbs is impressive ratio you ask me. Biggest fish ever caught in both kayaks. Great night. Thanks if you read it all.
