Sliders are fun to fish.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Use cylindrical foam. Heat the hook a bit and melt it into the foam body. A bit of super glue and tie on a tail of some sort. Not real fussy. They’re bluegills.

Well, with 2 feet of snow outside my door I figured it was that time of year again to sit at the fly tying bench.

Many years ago, I did well on the Delaware system using sow bug and scud imitations but for reasons unknown, they were replaced by other flies in my box. Scanning YouTube and other sites, and  with all the new materials out there, you have all sorts of new ways to tie these things. So I'll be tying various types of these "scuds" over the winter and when I get back down there, Ill see what works best.  First one I found on YouTube is called the Simple Sow Bug so I gave it a whirl.

Here's the link.

Here's my results, tied in a size 14.

Fly Tying is a great winter pastime so I encourage non-tiers to give it a go this winter. Fun stuff.

Heck, I’d almost eat that Bart!

You’re right about tying being a great way to fill the dark days of winter. I’ve been in the wood shop working on Christmas gifts for the last 6 weeks. That’s all done and now I’m starting in on hand made bobbers. Mad a few last summer and got the bug.

A lot like fly tying.

Good stuff to keep idle hands from mischief.

Agree on the multli-species use. I do like to fly fish for gills and I took a ride yesterday and my local lakes are locked up, time to break out some ice fishing gear.

Ah yes spring creeks, and tailwaters too. From my memory, the sowbugs on the Delaware system were good size and greyish in color so I tied a different pattern on a size 10, using grey dubbing and grey ostrich herl underneath. I'm going to keep experimenting with these and eventually the trout will declare a winner.
