Zebco 22 Casting Problem

I bought a Zebco Gold 22 for my son.  About half the time it casts great the other half it goes out 25' and the line catches the pawls inside the reel.  For some reason the reel is engaging mid cast.  Does anyone have experience this?  Is it something that can be adjusted?  I already returned the reel once because of this and the replacement I got does it less frequently but still does it.

Some times it's the line being overlapped and biting into the spool.  I use to use Zebco's and even the Rhino reels.
