You might try climb cutting instead of against the grain. Takes some additional control but will produce a smoother cut on end grains.

I have an oscillating drum sander from harbor freight. Works pretty well. I use it a lot for sanding template work. $60 or so of real help.
If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Hey, you’re approaching “old fart woodworker” status!  Very nice.

You need a lathe. No better way to get lost in creativity. Good for the mind and soul.

Thanks guys!
I’m slowly moving into “Old fart woodworker” status.  😁

Having all of the necessary equipment in my arsenal makes it easy. The lathe may be the only piece of equipment missing. I may need some guidance when time comes to purchase one. Bob may be that guy.😁
I’ve been wood working most of my life, but, other activities have restrained me from doing it more often. I’m finding more time to do more of it as I get older!🙂

I’ll be happy to help Bud. Just keep in mind wood turning is a rabbit hole…..a deep rabbit hole.

Beautiful job. Your son will be proud to pour a “wee dram”.
