Title: Garden time!!!
Post by: slipbob on Apr 26, 2004, 03:24 PM
It's about time for those first fresh veggies.  The asparagus is coming along nicely and so are the sugar peas, lettuce, and spinach.  I was able to plant about 3 weeks ago and now the seeds have sprouted and off we go.
Here's some of the asparugus which returns every year and is planted by rootstock which must be limed, mulched and fed well for best results.

Once walleye season opens here which will be this Saturday we can get some actual fish pictures going here but I love taking pictures just the same even if it's not always of fish.  I hope you find these pictures at the very least, mildly entertaining.  Next week I will get pics of that state record breaking walleye I will most certainly catch. ::)

Very nice Slipbob!!  I don't have a garden space yet.  My wife and I have had our home for five years.  It sits on approximately 14 acres of very overgrown land.  We have done a lot of brush removal/landscaping/lawncare and are just now to the point where we can start looking at places to put in a garden!  Can't wait to get some fresh veggies going and become a little more self-sustaining.

Thanks Cider!  firstice-rules I do love to garden very much.  Every year I expand the gardens.  I mostly do perennial beds because they are nice and come back every year.  I bought my house about 3 years ago and am slowly turning the whole property into a giant garden.  I have a lot more work yet but I'm getting there.

That's it.  I hate spending time mowing the darn lawn.  I have a pushmower and it takes me about one solid hour or more to cut.  I wanna knock that down to 20 minutes and just have some grass paths between the flower and veggy beds.  I need about 3 more summers to pull it off and I will have a 3/4 acre garden.  The problem then is I will need about 40 cubic yards of mulch every year to spread but oh well.  I used about 20 yards last summer.  Lots of work but walleye fishing is just an evening activity.

Nice pics Slipbob. Maybe I'll post some pics of mine in the future. BTW, I hate mowing also. But it DOES beat the heck out of shoveling snow. ;D

First is just an overview of the garden. Garlic is in the first bed.

That's awesome mike692.  You are a true credit to the gardeners among us.  Beautiful setup.  Where do you live?  I am getting ready to get my tomatoes and hot peppers in soon.  I've got some nice habaneros and jalapenos ready to go and it's about time to get the carrots planted too.  I just need to trade off some walleye fishing time for time in the garden.

Post by: mike692 on May 12, 2004, 06:24 PM
Thanks slipbob. I live in the Laurel Mountains in southwestern PA. If you have a late frost where you live, you should try some of those Wall O' Waters. This is my second year with them and I'm sold. So far this year the tomatoes in them have survived a 2 inch snow, and a couple of hard frosts. They are just about ready to pop out the top.
I want to get some things out this weekend. Carrots and some different types of lettuce and spinach. Need to plant some herbs and I am going to take a chance and put some zukes and cukes out. I looked today and my potatoes are coming up as well.

Gardening is awesome!  I like perennials best, but it's all fun.  There's just something about digging in the dirt, it gives me a feeling of utter tranquility.

You got that right otter.  I have about 45 different perennials in my gardens now.  I experiment a lot to see what overwinters best and survives in my relatively sandy soil.  Many perennials are getting ready now and I will update with some photos and botanical descriptions as we go through the summer.  Some of my anthemis is getting close as well as several columbine species and iris's.  I have some early shasta daisies too that will bloom in a couple of weeks.  Perennials rule.  Plant them once, mulch well, and take good care of them and they will reward you for years.  ;D

Post by: mike692 on May 16, 2004, 06:50 AM
I never had much of an interest in perennials until recently. I have grown more common ones such as tulips and daffodils, but not much else. The last couple years I've started with black-eyed susans and purple coneflower. This year I am starting pansies and johnny jump ups. I think I can get them to over winter if I mulch them good. I may, if time permits, order some bulbs for planting this fall.

BTW, I hit the garden pretty good on Friday. Planted green beans, carrots, zucchini, yellow squash, cukes, and a second sowing of lettuce and spinach. Hoping to be frost free until fall now. Although, that full moon on June the third scares me a bit..... ;D

mike692 those are great pics.  My columbine has to be moved it's not doing very well now I have them in too much sun.  I need to relocate them soon for next year but all of the stuff I have pictured survived -30 degrees last winter so they have to be hardy.  The poppies are very nice it's the first year for me with them.  I bought them last spring and I now get to enjoy the blooms finally.  Your greens look great and you do a really nice job with your garden.  You'd  make a great neighbor when I'm out of lettuce.  Keep the pics coming and I will update with the perennials as they come along through the summer.  I just put out my jalapenos, habaneros and tomatoes of which my favorite is the old reliable Brandywine heirloom variety.  If you are looking for some good quality pernnials check out www.bluestoneperennials.com.  I have ordered from them many times and have always been happy with their plants.  They are in Ohio and do mail order plants.  The first year they just get established and the second year is when you really can reap the rewards.

I have heard of Bluestone. They are ranked very high at gardenwatchdog.com. If you like heirloom plants, check out Sandhill Preservations website. They sell heirloom seeds and old varieties of poultry.

My poppies and columbine were both here when I moved in; the poppies spread every year, and if I want to use that bed for other things, I have to keep them thinned. They are both in full sun, and it has never seemed to bother them.

Do you ever save seed from your vegetables? That red leaf lettuce in the first pic is called "devil's tongue". It's an heirloom variety I got from Territorial. The plants this year are from seed I saved from them last year. Almost 100% germination.

It has been very hot and wet here, so I am having problems with slugs and flea beetles. Slugs nipped off some of my pepper plants already. I hate those things. Someday I'm just going to cut the ducks loose in the garden.... ;D
Title: Re: Garden time!!!
Post by: slipbob on May 19, 2004, 03:59 PM
I have only saved seeds from some perennials like hollyhocks and shasta daisies mainly out of laziness.  My brother has used seeds from territorial many times and has always been happy.  I could use some of that wetness because I am on pure sand and if it rains hard just wait 5 minutes and you won't even know it rained.  It's always an extreme though it's either too wet or too dry.  Sorry to hear about the slugs they are a nightmare we are lucky here they are nonexistent but depending on the soil type they can be plentiful.  You have a richer darker soil that will hold the water longer and keep the slimy slugs in business.  It's probably very fertile and needs few amendments but if you keep getting rain it's hard.  You can't make the water go away except for raised beds.  It's definitely easier to irrigate than deal with constant precipitation.   That's great you have poppies they are nice I had some Iris here when I bought the house but I am adding new plants every year by both seed and division of current rootstock.

I have pretty good soil, but it does get very hard after it dries. If I didn't have raised beds, my garden would be a pond. I'd have to dig ditches to divert the water. The way I have it now, the water just runs through the paths between the raised beds. Half of the garden still gets too wet to plant until late spring/early summer.

We can find some for ya Jack.  I know some of the local greenhouses will carry some hummingbird favorite perennials.  Something bright and trumpet shaped is best.  I will check up on it in one of my perennial books as they give you ideas on plant types for different needs like a butterfly garden or shade garden or what not.

I will check up on it in one of my perennial books as they give you ideas on plant types for different needs like a butterfly garden or shade garden or what not.

Look for delphinium, gerbera daisies, sweet william, phlox, digitalis (foxglove), columbine, hollyhock, any day lilies or iris, purple coneflowers, lupine, bee balm, rudbeckia (black eyed susans), or salvias for perrenials.  They will all do nicely around here.

Asiatic and oriental lilies are some of my favorites!

Annuals/hanging baskets: dahlias, fuschia (these are one of my favorites for attracting hummingbirds), geraniums, gladiolus (very cool when you can get them to grow nice tall straight spikes), begonias, impatiens, nasturstium, zinnias, snapdragons, petunias

For shrubs: azaleas, rhododendrons, lilac, weigelia, russian olive, hawthorne, trumpet vine, mountain laurel.

These will also attract a plethora of butterflies!

Thanks for the input Cider you obviously have a bevy of botanical knowledge.  If you like the lilies I have a good stock of them and will post some pics when they are ready.  I put in a few kinds last year including longiflorum asiatics and miniature tigers which are the same as the 6 foot monsters that have to be staked but a 3 foot version.  They are coming along nicely and are without a doubt the most intoxicating of any flower as far as fragrance.  Bring a cut lilie into a room and float it in a wineglass and it brings a great scent to the room.

Yup.  I took a couple botany courses and got into growing orchids and carnivorous plants quite heavily.  Unfortunately, my current home is a large open-plan saltbox that we heat with wood in the winter.  It gets very dry and I can't keep it humid enough for the orchids.  I also had trouble with temperature requirements.  Some plants needed seventy degrees 24 hrs.  Others wanted 70 degree days and cool nights and others wanted cool temps for 24 hrs.  I went from well over a hundred plants to now just two since we bought our house almost five years ago.

I can keep cattleyas alive there but lost my stanhopeas, papheopedilums, dendrobiums, oncidiums, phrags, phalenopsis orchids.  I used to have them growing on slabs and in hanging baskets as well as in different potted media.  I miss having them around and cannot wait to get the right environment for them again.

As far as the carnivores, I played around with various types of pitcher plants mostly.  I grew Sarracenia flava, Sarracenia purpurea, and a few sarracenia crosses, and a couple Nepenthes spp.  I also had some Drosera spp, bromeliads & tillandsias (air plants).

At one time I belonged to the American Orchid Society, two local orchid societies, and the International Carnivorous Plant society.

Someday I hope to have a 12X20 or so hobby greenhouse so I can get back into amateur botany again.  The world of plants is downright fascinating.  I didn't really want to take a botany course, but it was mandatory for the degree.  After sitting through it, I couldn't get enough!

I even thought about starting my own greenhouse business.  Unfortunately, there are plenty of them around here and I don't think I could draw enough business to stay with it.  It would have been nice to work for myself at home being outside enjoying the weather and having time to fish or hunt whenever I wanted to.  My winters would have been wide open for everyday ice-fishing!

Nice pics Slipbob!
I spent the last three days working in the garden. I built a new grape arbor this week and planted most of my tomatoes. I am going to wait a couple days before I put peppers out. I also planted cukes, watermelons, and cantaloupes. Also cleaned out some lettuce and spinach that had either turned bitter or bolted. I planted a second crop of lettuce in the voids.

deerhunter,

I am a tomato freak. I planted a dozen or so varieties this year. When they start to get ripe that's all I eat until first frost. I hold the record for most BLT's eaten in consecutive days. ;D

Here's some nice perennial pics from this weekend that my girlfriend took with my camera.
A nice scarlet poppy.

A longiflorum asiatic lily which are lightly fragrant and good naturalizers.

There were some cedar waxwings in a small tree near my shed and I managed a picture of a couple.  They are very interesting birds and hit a tree or bush in a flock and just seem to eat all of what's there and move on to the next feed.  Great coloration.

Finally a strawberry foxglove which is a true perennial variety.

SB, Those foxglove are awesome! I just brought home a few more perennials yesterday. A yarrow plant, with red flowers, and bee balm.
I have an unused rabbit cage setting in the backyard that I've been putting off cleaning. Well I noticed last week that a cedar waxwing was collecting the fur from the cage for a nest. I figured that was a good excuse to leave it set even longer. ;)
This morning I went down and she had somehow managed to get herself stuck in the cage. I opened the door and took a step back and she was gone. I don't see many of them here so that was a treat to see one that close. They are a cool bird. They rank right up there with a rose-breasted grosbeak.

Sorry Popeye this hot weather did in the spinach.  It's now up to it's usual move which is to start going to seed and it's over for the spinach untill the fall crop.  I'll replant spinach in late August and it's usually ready by early October and good untill freeze up.  My sugar snap peas are almost ready and I'll have lots of those for you.  A nice bowl of fresh steamed sugar peas would be a nice companion to some fresh fish.   ;)  I just gotta get the fish now.

I hate to admit it but this is the first time I have looked at this post.  I am a garden nut.  I especially like my roses.  The pic's above of the asain lilly's are great, they are also one of my favorites.  I took this pic of one of my roses the other morning.  I will try to get more and post soon.

Nice rose is right.  Those are what I don't have much of save for one lame rose bush.  foszey it takes me a lot of time.  Being single with no children allows me more freedom but I usually work every night after work outside for at least 2 hours to keep up.  I'm in the installation phase of a huge perennial garden now that is approximately 200 yards long by 20 yards wide and it should be done in about a month save for the bulbs that I will plant in October.  I am now working on a new veggie garden that's about 30ft by 30ft and I need to rent a small landscape tractor to do that.  I need to expand because gardening is something that just snowballs and it's never enough.  I want to do potatoes, carrots, peas, brussell sprouts, squash, tomatoes, peppers, beans, and god knows what else.  It just takes so much room to do the stuff so you need a big area and have to commit a lot of time.  The problem is I don't fish much now to keep up with it but once October rolls around gardening season slows down and I can fish a lot more.

Hostas are getting ready to bloom and the roses and sage for a second time.  I'll get some close-up pics then.  No bass in the water garden but, there is an 18" channel cat and a 12" crappie.  You would not believe how clean the channel keeps that pond!  It gets alot of sun and early this summer it was getting quite dark and murky.  I dropped in a little cat that I caught in 3 days the water was crystal clear.  ;D  Thanks Mr. Whiskers!

Also, could someone help me identify this.  It came up last year with some mixed wild flower seeds.  I like it but can't figure out what it is.  It has nice white and blue flowers on it.  It looks thorny but is very soft.  The flowers look kinda wicked.

Okay let's dig this one up again, no pun intended.  ;D  This was Saturday as I was working the garden over with the old Troy Bilt Pony getting her ready.  Got some nice compost mixed in here again this spring and the soil is looking good.   These rototillers aren't exactly comfortable to use if you're 6'3".  Not good for the back.  :P  On the bottom right you can see part of my spinach and lettuce patch that had been under a nice cold frame all winter and it got off to a nice start.  I planted it in late September so it would overwinter.

Thanks Roy.  I had to bring some good soil in because the part of Saratoga County I'm in is pure sand.  You could dig all day and not find one rock :o  It just doesn't have any organic matter in it to hold water or nutrients for gardening.  Compost and aged horse manure is key.

didn't you move?  you gardening somewhere other than home?

I'm closing on the new house May 5th the day before walleye season opens and moving late May to early June.  I'm only moving 2 miles down the road and I'm keeping this duplex where the garden is now as an investment.  My plan is just to keep the garden here that I've got going for this year and start the new garden at the new house in the fall.  It's nice because it's so close and I've worked too hard on this garden to just give her up.  I will have almost 6 acres at the new place so I can have that "dream garden" I've always wanted and have the room to do corn and a large potato crop.   :thumbup_smilie:  I can't wait to grow my own sweetcorn but you really need the room for enough corn so you can get good cross pollination and a big tater crop eats up a lot of space too.

Thanks for getting this thread going slip!  I hope to read some tips and provide some also!!  My garden is 5000 plus square feet, and provides me and family with a lot of tasty, nutricious goodies.

Tip #1.  I discovered this when I was planting corn for deer.  When you get the corn planted, overseed it with clover.  Clover is a legume and produces nitrogen at the roots.  The first time I did this was with Silver Queen seed, and the plants were like 12 feet high, and the ears were up near a foot long!

Of course there are drawbacks.  For some gardens, this could be inviting rabbits or woodchucks, but if that is not the case for your garden, you will be happy with the results.

Your more than welcome oc.  That's interesting about the green cover for corn.  I have a very large number of bunnies, turkeys and some deer at the new place so I will need to fence my garden but we'll see how it goes.  I would love to have a nice corn crop.   :)

Hey Slip, can you give me some tips/directions on how your coldframe works?  I have never used one before...Thanks, OC

I first figured out how big my cold frame would be based on the length of the posts I had and then planted spinach and lettuce in that area in mid September so it would come up and get started good before winter.  Then all I did was take some old posts I had that are in the same shape as railroad ties and stacked them 3 high and made a rectangular shaped box about 2 feet tall on top of which I placed a couple full sheets of plexiglass.  I then piled dirt up pretty high around the sides to insulate it from the cold.  The spinach and lettuce stayed nice and green all winter under there and it just gives you a really early start to the season on some greens.  By early March the temps would get pretty toasty in the cold frame from the sun and the plants started growing again and you can have a nice crop of spinach by mid April.  My cold frame was about 10ft by 4ft but I know realize that I need about 4 times that area to have a big enough crop in the spring for my needs but I'll do that this winter by either making multiple cold frames or just one really big one.  I didn't take a picture of it so I hope my explanation is adequate.  You just have to make the sides high enough above the dirt so the plants have some headroom, at least 2ft or you can dig a recess into the dirt and set them down a little too.

PS, my peas are up, and the onions are looking good already!

It's the only way to get a good head start on eatin size greens in April.  Good luck with it and I'll be making a couple jumbo cold frames this fall so I can take some pics then.  I will need a fence for sure at the new house to keep out deer and bunnies but you're welcome in the garden anytime.   ;D

Bartman loves asparugus  ;)

Me too Bartman me too.  I have a patch of Jersey Giant and also purple asparagus.  It's not doing all that great where it is because the soil is too sandy but I will be starting another large patch at the new house soon.  It takes about 3 or 4 years before asparagus really gets going good and you can harvest a lot.  I LOVE the stuff.

It's about time to start an herb garden too!   ;)

yes, yes it is.  We had a nice one last year.  My girlfriend is in charge of that stuff.  Cilantro, Thyme, Rosemary, Sage, gotta have Basil and some other stuff.  Nothing like fresh herbs.

looking for some advise from slipbob and anyone else that wants to chip in....we bought a large property over a year ago and one of the nice  ::) things was a very large garden area separated from the main home site by a heavily wooded buffer zone....its approximately 110' x 110' with nice draining soil....pretty much anything will grow well here...except roots veggies (turnips, etc) are prone to worms...last summer we planted a variety of greens such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage that were all a bust due to heavy infestations of canola bugs....potatoes were also a labor intensive with potato beetles that regardless of powdering and spraying were a nightmare.....here's my dilemna....I have more than enough grass that needs mowing at least twice a week at least until the first part of august...(3 hrs each time)....Mountainmama cant garden due to her back and suggested I seed it to grass.....(no way I'll do that...I have enough already)...today I planted corn and yukon gold potatoes....we have to full length rows of onions.....chard is already coming up from last years planting...we have strawberries around the plum tree in the centre of the garden....looking for ideas on some good groundcover veggies etc that will keep maintenance to a minimum.......lots of cucumbers???....watermelon???  canteloupe???   BTW...we have another plot in the front of the property that will be strictly herbs...tomatoes will go into the garden in about 2 weeks or so....open to any great ideas and suggestions....here's some pics looking from the raspberry patch in the foreground......Grump                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi15.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa398%2Fgrump606%2Fgarden2006002.jpg&hash=2ef5daafa0ce41b39ba9831ad154e16c)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi15.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa398%2Fgrump606%2Fgarden2006003.jpg&hash=dd83b3e48b445f9ae3102543c28f2d9a)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi15.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa398%2Fgrump606%2Fgarden2006004.jpg&hash=25a9f160d3d615a8d2ffd1448693998f)

Grump- Dont know if your a fan, but squashes and zucchini can grow huge leaves and provide excellent ground cover...Try some Belgian Giant tomatos if you can get your hands on some....they get huge and tatse better than any tomato I've ever had....Thats a nice hunk of space you got there to grow some of your own freshies  ;D

looking for ideas on some good groundcover veggies etc that will keep maintenance to a minimum.......lots of cucumbers???....watermelon???  canteloupe???   BTW...we have another plot in the front of the property that will be strictly herbs...tomatoes will go into the garden in about 2 weeks or so....open to any great ideas and suggestions....here's some pics looking from the raspberry patch in the foreground......Grump

Hi Grump, When I have had enough of planting stuff in my garden, (about 60 x 120) I finish off by planting a bag of "sunflower seeds for birds".  LOW Maintenance, and they look good growing.  Corn can also take up a lot of space.  (After planting corn, overseed with clover - the nitrogen from the roots does wonders).  Cucumbers need to be in a hill by me to grow well around here, so they would be a lot of work.  If you have access to a lot of manure, pumpkins, squash and gourds all take up a lot of space.

....thanks bud....I had about 3dozen giant sunflowers that were left out for the birds last winter....looks like some good volunteer ground cover in those spots lol.....just read about clover among the corn....will be doing that....likely going to go with tons of cucumbers, cantaloupe I hope....and likely some pumpkins....regards...Grump

Grump I thought I'd quick throw this in too.. zuchini also takes up lots of space and is EXCELLENT sauteed with other veggies or fried up in batter in the fryer ;).  We always have a few plants in our garden and if ya let them grow bigger, ya can always shred em up and use them in zuchini muffins or bread - mmm mmm good with coffee!!!  ;D

I can't wait for the zuccini and yellow squash to be done. The first nice small ripe ones are the best, a little marinade and straight to the grill they go!!!

Oh yeah and it won't be long for vailda's either.....or fresh sweet peas.....

Everything I have coming up is fine with frost.

Same here.  It frosted lightly but the peas, spinach and lettuce can all take a little frost with no problem.

Nice Buddleia pic dm!!!!!!!!!   :D  I have a LOT of those at my house.  Mostly Navajo Blue color and some real dark purple ones!!!!!!!!!!!  Summer lilacs are another common name as opposed to Butterly Bush.  Landscaping is one of my hobbies and I now have about 50 different kinds of perennials in my gardens but of course I'm moving soon so my favorites will be coming with me.  Good stuff.

so, how is everybodies gardens doing?  anybody eating anything fresh?  I have been eating lettuce and spinach so far.  I almost have the full 5500 sq feet planted.  A few more pumpkins, some squash and sunflowers, and maybe some gourds and ornamentals and I should be good to go.  Then comes the weeding! (ugh)  The peas need it already, and the onions and horseradish will soon need need to be weeded also.  By then, most of the potatoes will be ready to be hilled...

Going OKAY.  I was working harder than a prison road crew this weekend in that hot sun but I got a lot of stuff done.  I was hoping to be able to go fishing but everything takes so much longer than you expect :-\
These pics were from Friday night when I was laying the groundwork for my new perennial bed in the backyard.  I had borrowed an excavator to do the sod removal and shaping.  The bed's about 1800 sq ft which is about all the flowers I want to take care of this year.  I now have to go and move my plants from my other house to this bed which I'm working on this week.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv89%2Fslipbob%2FSpring%252006%2Fc1ee8145.jpg&hash=835168d4ff0ff75244324db8ab2e2328)

Saturday involved 4 loads of compost into the perennial bed and a lot of rototilling.  Let me tell ya, it was farkin HOT :P  After 5 hours on the tiller and unloading 4 loads of compost I was warmed up :o
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv89%2Fslipbob%2FSpring%252006%2F263e9fb4.jpg&hash=a384bdc09d86391fea0250f3d2dcd08a)
Here's my 2 acre field which was plowed this spring and a part of it will be the veggie garden.  I now have more room than I could ever imagine for a garden.  I got some tomatoes, peppers, beans, carrots and brussel sprouts planted so far and some fence up for the stuff that rabbits like to eat.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv89%2Fslipbob%2FSpring%252006%2Fb3cc091d.jpg&hash=37ffac4eee9db43385b8c35922237530)
I'll get some more pics as I move along.

Yeah, it's a BIG job but I'm getting close to completion.  I have close to 50 different perennials and want to move my favorites to my new house so I needed to get the bed done ASAP so I have a place to transfer them to before I sell my old house.  I am not moving all my plants as that would take too much time but I'm taking the best ones.  I do all my own landscaping and gardening and really enjoy it.  I am scaling down my gardens at this place because I want to be able to do more fishing on the weekends this summer instead of constantly moving much and compost around and weeding not to mention the veggie garden.  I got into the problem of having too many flowers and it just became a full time job to take care of them all.  I've now come to my senses.  ;)

Jebus man! You could supply my whole town with veggies from that nice big field.  ;D WTG

;D  Well I'm sure as hell not planting that whole thing :o  We're going to turn most of it into pasture grass so my girlfriend can keep her horse there.

The little dog keeps the deer, moles, and rabbits away. I only shoot what's legal.
I tried woodchuck once (had to  :P).
I didn't like it, but the coyotes do.

TRUE MEN DON'T SHOOT COYOTES!
I may catch some hell for that, but I really don't care.

I have heard that woodchuck livers are supposed to be very tasty, but I never tried them.

ps, I don't shoot the coyotes either.  I like to watch them as part of nature.

here's an update on things around the garden here. we've had pretty much no rain for the last 5 weeks, except for about 2 brief showers that dropped about 1/16". the only things that have been watered sparingly have been the tomatoes, lettuce and pepperplants which might get once a week or less. ground moisture has been good even with daytime temperatures averaging around 90 degrees. When I walked out to take pics this afternoon, a thunderboomer came through and lightly sprinkled the plants as I took these pics, and the sun popped back out on the way to the house.                                                                                                                             (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv466%2Fmauricelegros%2Fgardenjuly001.jpg&hash=ff0c14236ed050671c2ca49049af3e0e)                                                                                                                              (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv466%2Fmauricelegros%2Fgardenjuly002.jpg&hash=2b6f36e415375a36b9ebb9aa8044ccbc)                                                                                                                              (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv466%2Fmauricelegros%2Fgardenjuly003.jpg&hash=20619258e9c38e693017e418728c2bfb)                                                                                                                              (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv466%2Fmauricelegros%2Fgardenjuly004.jpg&hash=2f91de7ae0e23e51876fc7136a11ede0)                                                                                                                              (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv466%2Fmauricelegros%2Fgardenjuly005.jpg&hash=db4d2e16d37ff10cbd783739c09560c9)                                                                                                                              (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv466%2Fmauricelegros%2Fgardenjuly008.jpg&hash=590dbe433a9c0943373cfcda223fcba7)                                                                                                                              (https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv466%2Fmauricelegros%2Fgardenjuly009.jpg&hash=fff3713243a75e2ffc2f2c7409125387)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      strawberries are long since over...raspberries have been producing for over 2 weeks and still going strong.  the squash planted only to take up space and provide groundcover have gone crazy wild with each plant taking up about 12' and now climbing the plum tree....the cucumbers are going crazy too. I jokingly said the other day, that I swear when I finish picking the second row, I go back to the first lol...cantaloupes are already about 1/2 size and likely to produce a few HUNDRED  ::) ::) peas just about done....corn near...Yukon gold potatoes are fully grown..(one is enough to fill a frypan)...all in all....a great year on a sparesly watered garden. Man, I have had a bad year for the garden.  Other projects  >:( and of course fishing  ;D have got in the way.  I didn't put as much time in as usual.  Tomatoes have been OK - we canned sauce and were actually eating tomatoes on Memorial Day weekend (small hobby greenhouse allows me to get a couple of plants in early).  We also had enough strawberries to freeze in syrup and picked a ton of wild wine berries also frozen.  They both make quick and tasty deserts.  Other than that..... not much.  A few peppers, zuchinis, asparagus, potatos and beans.  Carrots and onions are for crap.  We did have brocoli and cauliflower early.  Now I'm hoping for my late escarole to do well.

To be completely honest, ladyfish, I have no idea.  :-\   When it comes to heirloom tomatoes, my dad can prattle on for hours about hyrbids, strains, other stuff that is lost on me.  They grow 'em and I eat 'em.  All I can tell you is that they were all delicious. ;)

This time of year, we eat bacon and tomato sandwiches a couple of times a week.  Real bacon - not the waterlogged crap in the grocery stores - go to a butcher to get the real thing.  Add a little mayo and all of a sudden a sandwich is a good time!

I'm right with you Scansy.  My friend found this little spot for bacon that is un-freakin'-believable!  It's a little butcher shop/convenience store way out in the sticks.  The proprietors are a husband and wife team in their 80's or 90's.  They cure and smoke right there on site.  The service seems terrible until you slow down and get into chatty mode.  It takes forever for them to get your order, but they know my name and remember what I want everytime I walk in.  It's about 45 minutes one way to get there, but I'd drive twice that far for this bacon.  My friends have taken to calling it God's bacon and I can't disagree.  It's the best I've ever had and I used to belong to a bacon of the month club!  Everytime I drive up, I pray they are still alive ;)

Tried growing a giant pumpkin for the first time this year. Got an 80 pounder and a 55 pounder prize winner hybrid. Next year I think I'll try Atlantic giant seeds and try for a real monster. I learned a lot and my daughter loved to help fertilize and water it and watch it grow which was my whole purpose anyway! Here's the 80 pounder.
