Title: Soon to be retired
Post by: Mac Attack on Mar 25, 2022, 03:47 PM
Wow!
Things are moving quickly.

As some of you know, we have sold the lake place on Erie.
We have a sizeable deposit, and the buyer should have the rest in the next couple weeks.
We have moved 99.5% of our belongings from out there home.
We are going out there tomorrow to inspect the place and clean things up a little for the new owners.

My son Jeff is buying the house, and we have a tentative closing date of 4/27/22

I just returned from buying a 12' enclosed trailer that we will use to move out things to Florida.
Not sure if one trip will do it, but we will see how good Donna is at throwing crap out.   ;)

We leave a week from next Wednesday for Florida.
We are taking the motorhome down for a short 2.5 week vacation.
We will be towing Donna's SUV behind it.
We will leave the motorhome down there and drive back in her SUV.

The plan then is to start going thru 43 years of accumulation and decide what goes with, what stays with Jeff or the other 2 kids, and what gets tossed.
With the trailer here, we can slowly start filling it with things that need to go.
If it fills before the end of October, we have to make a decision.
Make a trip down and offload, or trim the load.
We will see.

And then there is the boat...........
I will drag that out of storage and get it ready to sell after we get back from Florida.
Jeff wants to fish a few times before we sell.
We'll see.
It will sell quickly I am sure.

Tick Tock

Won’t be long. Can’t recommend it more. Conquer life’s requirements and move on to doing what you want.

Spent the day with an individual who had his career in software design. He was bartering time for firewood as we cut up a downed ash tree. His take was, he’d had enough of the stress and corporate life. He’ll be part of the crew in a few weeks and seems very excited. A really nice guy. We’ll be glad to have him around…….if he can mow….

Just don’t forget how important it is to have work to do and people to socialize with. Those are the essence of life. Those who go into reclusion don’t last very long.

Mac    Good luck with the Move/downsizing, That has to be the worlds worst Job.  I retired and am still moving, and down sizing. seems to never end.  Bought a small farm in Tennessee, and amazed at how close places like Florida are, having spent so much time in Colorado, and West.

Thanks guys.
We leave for Florida tomorrow about noon or so.
The motorhome is packed, and Donna's Escape is loaded on the tow dolly.
Her SUV is loaded too.
We took the opportunity to pack as much of our other personal belongings into the basement storage of the motorhome and the SUV to save on the move in the Fall when we head down there for good.
I put my pellet smoker in the SUV and about twelve 20# bags of pellets.
I reserved a storage facility down there where we will unload it all.
We have an appt on Friday morning at a place about an hour west of Atlanta for some suspension upgrades I want done.
The place has a fenced in area out back where they allow motorhomes and semis to park overnight and dry camp.
We will get there Thursday night.
They even gave us the WiFi password for the place.
Nice people.
We expect to get into North Port, FL midafternoon on Saturday.
We will stay 2 weeks and drive the Escape home, leaving the motorhome down there.
Should be a fun trip.

I packed poles of course - I'll post pics.   8)

Finally found a rest stop with room.  We are about 30 miles into Kentucky.  The plan was to stop at M34 rest stop on I71, just north of Cinci.
Packed!!!
Tried a Flying J - same.
Hit the next rest stop as you get across the river and into Kentucky and it too was packed.
Crazy!!!
I pulled into a truck weigh station maybe 15 miles further south and we found a spot to spend the night.
I have a stiff Maker’s Mark and water and heated up some dinner.
Watching the 70’s Show off the antenna.
Running the generator tonight.
All is well.

Maybe he's going to Nashville then to Ga or springs or shocks then to Florida.

Got in to Safe-T-Plus in Tallapoosa, GA about 90 minutes ago.  Off-loaded Donna’s Escape from the tow dolly and removed the dolly from Betty.  Then parked them off to the side out of the way.
Parked Betty and just finished some dinner and a Bud Light.
We have an 8:30am appt in the morning for some suspension upgrades.  Koni shocks, larger sway bars front and rear, and their Safe-T-Plus heavy duty steering stabilizer.
This will take them a few hours.
Then off to the first rest stop over the Florida line for the night.
We are whipped!!!
It was a very long day.

Trip update.
Still in Tallapoosa, GA.
The suspension upgrade work we had done on the motorhome here at Safe-T-Plus took a lot longer than everyone expected.  Things went well, and the upgrades were well worth it, but took long.
End result is that we didn’t get back on the road and will stay the night here in their lot.  No tv or WiFi, but I have Maker’s Mark bourbon.  And another guy here gave me an IPA.  Anyway, now getting to the campground on Sunday instead of Saturday.
Life is good.
Here’s a pic of that IPA - it was awesome!!!

We are now sitting at a truck scale that has overnight parking about 25 miles south of that welcome center.
We will see if anyone chases us out

Many years ago my twin and I took a trip to Massachusetts non stop from Indiana as we lived in Mass a few years before. We were just out of high school and dumb so we didn't think of making a reservation anywhere for a layover. At some point we got so tired we were afraid of falling asleep at the wheel so we pulled into a Rest Stop in Massachusetts to get some shut eye. We had just fallin' asleep when bright light showed in the car and it was a policeman. He wanted to know what we were doing there. We told him and he said it was too dangerous to stay there and to get back on the road. Huh? I was wondering which would be more dangerous: the rest stop or the falling asleep at the wheel?

Glad you trip is going well. Keep us posted!

Yea, back in WNY too I heard.
We leave to head back north Friday morning.
Get home about midafternoon on Sunday.
An easy 2 day - 2 night trip.

Then pull our stint back north until about mid to late October.
Then back down her by 11/1/22 for good.

As I've said, Donna is done with work 6/30 and me on 11/18, however, I'll have 3-4 weeks vacation to burn up so I'll leave about mid October.

We bought a small enclosed utility trailer.
We will start packing it slowly.
Probably make a short trip down here this summer in July or August to bring a load and get it into storage.
Maybe we can coordinate the trip with a house buying trip ?!?!?!

It's nice down here.
No more snow and really warm temps, which is what we really like.
But the largest benefit, there's no effin snow.

Good looking house, my mom and husband just bought a house in Orlando so helping them move down there from Texas here in a little bit. Sounds like the housing market down there has been crazy like it has been around me, houses that are good go within days of being on the market. Some people paying crazy prices for houses too.

Yea, prices are stupid!
And there are zero houses for sale.

The lake place is officially sold.
Check cleared today.
I will hand over the keys in the next day or so.

And I just got a text from my son Jeff.
He just finished closing on the house.
His name is now on the tittle (and a new mortgage).
That check will take a few days to clear but shouldn't be a problem.

Then we will wire the rest of the money to Florida to secure our new place.

Things are moving forward.

One short trip to Florida to take a trailer load of belongings down Memorial week.
Then finish working for our respective jobs till we retire, Donna on 6/30 and myself in mid to late October.
Then Donna and I will take the last trailer load of belongings down there with us to live out our golden years.

And he will meet with his brother to put together an offer for me.  Promised to have it completed and to me by Wednesday.

They accepted my 8/31 retirement date (actually leaving on 8/15 using remaining vacation time).
They also made me an offer to stay on in a reduced capacity, working from the new home in Florida, for a bit less salary for 2 more months (Sept and Oct).
Discussed the offer with Donna over the telephone with her at work a few minutes ago.
We will discuss further when she gets home later this afternoon.
Unsure if I will accept.

In any event, I'm moving to Florida permanent on or shortly after 8/15.
Which is good.

We could even do a head boat or charter something if you want.

Yea Bob, I'm done.
I have officially paid my dues to society.
Time for Donna and I.

The plan is to get down there and take the remainder of august to get as settled as we can, and then we will take all of September and do whatever we want, when we want.
30 days to unwind and chill.
This will probably involve tons of liquor, sex, and fishing.
It might also put me in the ER.

We went back to Ashley Furniture to look again at the 2 bedroom sets we narrowed the search down to.  Today was the last day of the most recent sale.
We tried to buy it and get it delivered down south to the new place.  Manager said they couldn’t do that.  However, quietly, he told me to order it on line and then I could get it delivered down there.  Cool!
While we were there we also found a storage bench for the foot of the bed.  And when I located it on the website it was $200 less than the sale price here in Buffalo.  Score!!
We also selected the mattress we want.  I hate mattress shopping.  We probably tested every mattress in the place 10X each.  Anyway, the mattress we want is out of stock on line.  We will wait till we get back down there and head over to the Ashley store in Port Charlotte and buy it there.  By then it will be Labor Day weekend and I’m sure there will be another sale.

I want new living room furniture.
We will wait until we are down there to start looking for that.

Wooofreekinghoooooo!!!!
My retirement truck is at the dealer.
Finally!!!
I ordered it in January.
It was done being built on April 18th.
But it had to wait for chips.
4 projected ship dates came and went.
We leave permanently for Florida on 8/16 and I didn’t think we would have the truck.
I’m going to go out and inspect it later.  I’ll take a few pics and post them.
My day just got good!!

It's cactus grey.

Way back I was looking at another vehicle and the color of that one was (something) sand.

I reread that earlier this morning.
I certainly didn’t write that with the intention it came across as.  So I removed it as you saw.  Then got to thinking more on the color.
So I went to the Ford website and saw you were right.

Picked up the Ranger today.
It’s nice.
Smaller than the F150 and definitely lighter in the back end.
I need to get used to it but I like it.
Will fit our new lifestyle better than the larger truck.  Rated to tow 7500, just like the F150 was.  But it’s 2WD as the F150 was 4WD.  I had Ford install the electronic locking differential in the rear end to help at the slippery launch ramps.
The B/O sound system rocks!!

Good saltwater rods, but not the greatest for casting in the surf.

Everything going south is packed and in the garage.
Man, we have a lot of crap!!!
We made well over two dozen trips to Goodwill.  Not to mention the ton of things we gave away and tossed to the curb each week.
Anyway, I pick up a Uhaul enclosed trailer early tomorrow morning.  My new BIL and a customer/friend are stopping by to help Donna and I load everything from the garage into the trailer.
My truck is packed as well as Donna’s Escape SUV.
The plan is to get things loaded, and then grab an early lunch at Charlie the Butcher’s up at the corner so we can get on the road by noon or before.
First day is only 5-5.5 hrs to Columbus, OH.  Some guys I’ve worked along with from Honeywell are meeting us for a small party they are giving Donna and I.
Then Tuesday we travel just south of Knoxville to have dinner with guy and his wife that I went through school with.  Should be fun.
Third day we go to Valdosta, GA to spend the night.
Fourth day on to our new home.
A relatively slow paced 4 day trip down.
We did it this way because Donna is nervous driving a long trip like this.
She will be fine.
Long time coming.
Right now I’m watching some golf on the tube and taking a break.
Jeff is getting some Korean Chicken Wings for dinner.  He leaves later tonight for a jobsite in PA.

Title: Re: Soon to be retired
Post by: Mac Attack on Aug 19, 2022, 10:28 AM
Yesterday we finished the trailer and unloading both vehicles.
I then took the trailer to uhaul and went to Home Depot to buy a small 7 cuft chest freezer.
All of our frozen food from back north was in 2 large coolers and most was thawing.
Everything was safe, but I needed to get it back into a freezer quick to avoid spoilage.
Our side-by-side fridge/freezer wasn't large enough for one of those coolers, let alone both.
Worked out really well.
Not too large and there's room for additional down the road if needed.
I have a ton of homemade soups, stews, and sauces, etc.
We need to work on eating those and I need to stop making more until we deplete the current stash.  lol

Donna started unpacking boxes while I was gone.

Last night I worked on the hot water tank problem.
Tripped reset on the thermostat.
I reset it.
This is the 2nd time this has happened.
I will monitor and replace it if it does it again.

Today we are chilling a little but also emptying some more boxes.

The mountains (yea - plural) of boxes we have is outrageous!!!

A tip to all of you - go through your belongings often!!!
Throw out, donate, give away, etc.
Don't get to the point we were.
 :rotflol: :rotflol: :rotflol:

New windows (hurricane proof and thermal grade) being installed next Monday.

Still waiting on the new bedroom set from Ashley's we ordered 3 months back.
They said 14-16 weeks when we ordered it.
However, the small bench/chest was supposed to be in stock with a 2-4 week delivery and it just showed on Wednesday.  lol

It's Friday - Very happy to finally be here and I'm not going to kill myself today.  I have 4 boxes of liquor to locate and unpack.   ;D

4 guys here today.
All great guys.
English is rough, but so is mine.   :rotflol:
This is the one going in the dining room.
Donna is VERY happy.

Windows are all installed.
They came out freekin awesome.
Super differnece over the old ones.

Like this company's work so much that I called the salesman and scheduled him to stop by this friday.
We want to enclose the screen room and make it a year round room.
We will see what they can come up with.

Thursday we have a sales person stopping by to quote on new blinds for these new windows.
The old ones were fine (by my standards), but Donna has different ideas.

I will give it 3-4 months or so.
Keep Donna happy, and get her EVERYTHING she wants for this place.
She asked me about painting the window shutters.
I told her to call a guy and have new ones installed.

Anyway, in 3-4 months, after we sell the motorhome, I will take Donna to look at new pontoon boats.
 :whistling:

There WON'T be an argument on the boat.
 8)

Things are going quite well.

BTW, my planned shed expansion is currently a thing I go to bed each night thinking about.
Stay tuned.

Glad to hear everything is going well for you, you have a lot on your plate but looks like there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Can't sleep.
Story of my life.  lol

Ordered custom blinds yesterday for the new windows.
Again, Donna is happy.   ;)

Later this morning we have a contractor stopping by to give a price on converting the front screen room into a ful season room.
Right now, because it's only screen, it gets wet out there when it rains.
The floor is concrete, but still makes things a mess.
I will then add a wall AC unit out there.
We will then have an extra more useable room.
Donna wants to use it for her plants - she has a lot.
I will put one easy chair out there for a quiet place to read and relax.
I will also move our small chest freezer out there and get it out of the dinning room.   ;D

At some point will head over to the storage facility with a load and also to go thru things currently over there to possibly bring a few things back here.
Later in the day a run to Goodwill with some stuff and also a run to the landfill with some cardboard from the broken down cartons.

Word to the wise - go thru your crap every 4-5 yrs.
We brought down a lot of useless junk.
Mostly because we simply ran out of time up north and it actually became simpler to pack it than sell it or try to give it away.
We have 3-4 of everything.  Crazy!!!

Who is Mack?

I like AC
Especially when sleeping.
But out working in the yard, I like to sweat.

We got the blinds ordered.
The walls, windows, and door for the screen room too.

I need a break.
But more importantly, Donna needs one.
Contractor comes back tomorrow, for some confirmation measurements.
Sunday I’m gonna take her to Stump Pass for a walk in the sand.

Should change the title of this thread to, "Now Retired".
However, I'm doing more work than before retirement.  lol
We have been stupid busy trying to put things away.We are taking the opportunity to sort thru things and "trying" to make a sound decision of we need to keep something.
(or if we actually need 15 of something)

I have made 4 runs over to Goodwill and 2 runds to the landfill.

The 5 x 10 storage unit we rented is PACKED.
2/3's of it Xmas decorations - lol

However, my shed here is finally getting sorted through so that I can find something when needed.
I have a contractor coming this week to give me a price on doubling the size of it.
It is currently 9 x 7 and I want to push it out another 9.5' - 10' making it about 20 x 7.
This will then allow me to move the junk from the rental facility into it.
I will also build a very long workbench along the back long wall allowing me use my rod lathe and mount the bench grinder, vice, drill press, etc.

Today I decided we need a break as noted in a previous post.
Because we can't take Macy to the beach (dog ordinance), we will hit a huge flea market up in Sarasota.

I'm making Donna breakfast first.

Happy Sunday - I hope most of you are fishing.

Got to the flea market and saw signs saying “no pets”.
So we walked the outside stands.
Then grabbed an ice cream cone on the way back home.  Got one for Macy too.
Got home and assembled a beautiful little pantry cabinet.  Came out really nice.  I have some sanding to do on the door so it opens/closes perfect.  Then Donna wants to put a simple clear coat on it.
Now watching the final round of the Fed Ex Championship.

Donna reminded me of something earlier.  Wednesday was actually my last "official" day of employment.  I have been using up vacation time.  So yesterday I was officially retired.
Things have been crazy busy for Donna and I here at the new house in Florida.  We are making progress but are a long way from being done..............if that ever happens.
We had new windows installed and they are wonderful.  We have also ordered new blinds for the windows and also new windows and a door for the screen room.  Currently, the screen room cannot be closed, and it gets wet out there every time it rains hard.  So, we are yanking the screens and installing new picture windows and also a window on each wall that can be opened for a breeze when we want to go that route.  We are also replacing the door with a sturdier one that has a window in it that also opens for ventilation when needed.
Yesterday we moved a bed, a dresser, a chair, a sofa, and 2 night stands out of the master bedroom.  Our new furniture, minus the new bed, is coming later today.  So, the current bed and the dresser are being moved in the spare bedroom, with the remainder of those other items either going to a neighbor or the Salvation Army.
I also had Geek Squad connect my wide screen tv to the surround system.  I spent 2.5 days trying to figure out the HDMI eARC CEC system and finally gave up.
We still have a few remaining large, planned projects.  We will double the size of the shed.  In Florida, this requires a few more permits and approvals than required up north.  So, I will start this project next week.  The next is our water lines.  We think they are polybutylene, which is bad juju.  They deteriorate in 20-22 years and then leak.  So, I need to get a plumber here to inspect and if they are, give me an estimate for replacement.  We will also ask him/her to give us a price on upgrading faucets in the place.  Last item is the roof.  I need to get up there and personally inspect it.  The home inspection said it was fine, but I want to see it myself.  I want to see how long we have before replacement is needed, and also see how many layers are up there currently.
And lastly, next week, I need to get that motorhome and tow dolly both listed for sale.  I cannot buy a boat until I have room for it.  The motorhome and dolly are in our storage spot in our park's storage compound.
We are making progress, but things are still far from done so we can chill.
We are loving life!!!

Happy Friday.  😎

Think we’ll just stay here. Sounds like far less headaches and expense. And…there’s nothing about Florida that ever attracted me. Been there many times….not interested. Some different fishing, but no woods or hills or seasons ( other that hurricane season).

To each his own I guess.

If you do a little research you’ll find that retirement has been identified as the 10th most stressful life event one can adjust to…..among the top 45. Not easy to adjust.

Took me 25…maybe 30 minutes. Had to drive home from work.

Saw some of the local wildlife this morning.  A really nice Blue Heron.  And a little guy my grandson CJ named "Chompy".  The little gator is in a small pond near our house and is only a couple feet long at best.  The neighbor told us a small gator will move into that pond here and there for only a little while.  The pond is so small it doesn't provide enough food for a gator to grow larger and survive.  So, after they eat what's in the pond, they pretty much move on in search for a larger one.

Donna took a couple photos of the front of our place this morning.  Notice her Florida license plate.  We are officially Florida Residents now.  No more NYS income taxes.............or snow!!!!  It's 80 right now but they are calling for rain later.

Today the blinds people come and install the new blinds on the new windows. The screen porch you see in the photo is also getting new windows and a new door. we want to weatherproof it and make some more room, taking the current 1500 sqft to over 1600. This will be Donna's plant room. I have been getting quotes on making the shed larger too. Going to double it from 7x9 to 7x18.5. Lastly, we are having all of the water piping replaced. It is currently polybutylene, which is bad juju. Taking the opportunity to add a sink in the shed and also replace all of the sink/tub/shower fixtures too. Things are coming along. Slow, but moving forward.

I agree.
It's about 2-2.5 hrs north of us.
My grandparents lived there back in the early 70's and it was crowded then.
I was up there with the kids and Donna back in the early 90's and didn't like it.
Where I am it was wide open 30 yrs ago.
But it has been filling up.
Lots of construction.
I would rather have less people, like 25-30 yrs ago, but I still want to be down here.
So, I take one for the other.
After I get this motorhome sold and get the boat, we can head out on the river.
Not a ton of boat traffic on the Mayaka.
Nice and peaceful.
And if you head upriver, banjos and gators.

Gonna move this discussion back here where it belongs.

Really rough last buncha days boys for sure.

My brother’s place had the roof blown off during the hurricane.  He and his wife chose to ride out the storm there in the house.  Not good.

He is disabled and fell during the mayhem.  His wife couldn’t get him up.  So he spent the night on the floor throughout the hurricane with no roof over him.  I cannot imagine what that could have been like.  His wife finally grabbed some semi wet comforters and curled up on a back bed to try and get some sleep.  Not good.

Their place is a mess.
Their park, was the worst hit.
Donna estimates that 90% of the houses are totaled.
It looks like a war zone.
I’ll post pictures in the next few days.

My aunt lives over there too.  She’s my godmother, and my mom’s sister.
Her place is intact, but no power or water.  She lost her carport and some siding.  She was lucky.
Again, she chose to ride it out there.

BTW, I invited her and my brother and his wife to go to Miami with us in our hotel room.  They were stuborn.  I tried and tried to convince them and Donna and I finally had to leave.  It kills me, but I tried.  They are all still alive.  Miraculously!

I have to go to North Fort Meyers in the morning to help a friend with his mom’s house.  He and his brother drove down here from Buffalo non stop.  Typical drive down here is about 20-21 hrs.  It took them about 30-31.

On my way to help I’ll stop in to check on my aunt.

Our place -

We got lucky.
Some roof damage.
Some siding and trim damage.
Lots of trees and branches came down.
The debris cannot even be described.
Unbelievable!

We had water when we returned yesterday about 4pm, but no power.
I got the motorhome out of storage and brought it over to the house.  Got the generator in it fired up and got my fridge and chest freezer up and running.  Also some lights in the house and cell phone chargers.
I also
Plugged in 2 of my neighbors to the generator.

This morning, about 10-11 or so, we lost water.

About noon we got power.  For an hour.

We got back the power tonight about 6:30 or so.  It’s still on and it’s 9:30 so I think it might stay on.
However, the rv generator is still running and powering the fridge and chest freezer just in case.
Still no water.

That’s enough typing for now.
Life is great.
Florida rocks.
Mid 80’s and sunny tomorrow.
😎

The guys are coming up here tomorrow.
We will work on clearing my aunt’s carport and getting all the scrap out to the road so the salvage crews can take it when they come thru.

The roof of our screened room is shot.

I was hoping to avoid filing an insurance claim but may reconsider.

Thanks guys.

The photos, as most of you know, don’t really show how bad it is.
Our part sustained the least damage, yet ours is in the middle of the 5 parks.
I would say maybe 5 -10% of the homes cannot be lived in.
I’m my brother’s park, 2 parks from us, 10% can be lived in.  Their park is a disaster, as the one next to us on the NE side is.

It’s bad down here.  Real bad.

We have power.
The other 4 parks do not.
None of the parks have water yet, even ours.  Maybe later today they are saying.

Mac,
I am glad your doing ok. What we are seing in the media is the foundation of our country = neighbors helping neighbors.
In my work experience i had recently changed from working as a lineman for NYSEG over to the Bell System in the Hudson Valley, NY = spring of 1972 when Agnes devistated Corning, Elmira, Painted Post etc.
The crew i was in had the honor of spending 2 months(july & august) in Painted Post & Corning, rebuilding the pole lines, running and splicing 100's of miles of cables because just about everything was destroyed.
The memories that struck me most and continues today was all of the residents in those areas that had lost so much = just like you and your family, friends and neighbors.
The residents in those areas worked side by side to help each other.
I recall multiple times working up on a pole and people that lived on that street would come out and offer us food and water. They would have barbeques running out in the streets and invite us to come down off the poles and join them for some of their food.
What you and your family are doing to help others, puts you in that special place = Americans
For those of you that are young, look up Corning 1972 on Youtube to see what happend and then look at Corning today. Its communities coming together and Florida will rebuild.
John

Thanks John.

Yea, I rode out a hurricane in Myrtle Beach back in the 90's (forgot which one).
It was bad, but not like this.
Still, people all helped each other.

I went through the Blizzard of 77 back in Buffalo.
That was really bad.
But people did the same, helping each other.
Shoveling, checking on people, food, etc.

Same down here.
some neighbors of ours had a ton of meat that was going to spoil - so organized a bbq the other day for everyone.
We all got together and shared a few things with the meat.
I donated my grill, as did 2 other guys.
We had badly needed fun, but also bolstered each other's morale.

Again, thanks

Filed with FEMA this morning.
Probably won't get anything, but I filed.

Then my buddy Doug and his brother Darryl showed, and we went to my aunt's place.
We cut off/out all of the carport and stacked out at the road.
Now she can enter/exit her house the normal way.
Before today she had to go out this really bad screen door and thru the back yard near the canal (gators and snakes), and then thru the side yard to get out front.
See the photos below of her place before we cut everything off.

(https://i.postimg.cc/CBSg15g9/IMG-6022.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/CBSg15g9)

Sorry, didn't take photos of how it looked afterward.

She was thrilled.
She still has no power or water and refuses to leave.
Tomorrow I will be seeing her late morning and I will work on her some more to get her to my place.

Anyway, we stopped at my brother's place to inspect the tarping process the contractors my SIL hired are doing.
It's coming out really well!!!

Then to my place.

Doug and his brother went up on my roof and did a photo shoot-movie-inspection thingy.
Found about 20-25 shingles gone.
I had a pack of shingles in the shed and hauled it up them and they then replaced the missing shingles for me.
We still need a new roof, but we needed a new roof before Ian.
This bought me time.

I offered some drinks to the guys before they shoved off, but the refused.
They have a 22-24 hr ride back to Buffalo.
Heros!!!

Lastly, after they left, the water came on.

So, our place is now secure, and we have water and electric.

The beer's cold so Donna and had a couple.
then Donna took a shower.
My turn next.

Baby steps.

Tomorrow, I go visit my brother at 10am
It's his birthday tomorrow.
Sux!

Then to my aunt's place.

We lived to lie about it in our senior years.   ;)

Not many deer down here.

I have power from the motorhome generator.  Not enough to run the ac or the entire house, but enough to keep my fridge and freezer running and also the fridges of 2 of my neighbors.

Power is still out but my generator is still keeping the food in 5 homes from spoiling and the beer cold.

The power guys are finally here working on things.  I spoke to them earlier.  We were shut down to protect the guys working on things in the two parks on either side of ours.  I asked them to please get us back up and running before 1pm so I can watch the Bills game.  😎

The sound of chainsaws has replaced the sound of horns and sirens.  Lots of trees down that are being removed.  Already, the place looks different.  A shame that we lost so many trees.

One more casualty to report.  A tree came down on my motorhome and damaged the brand new roof I had installed last Fall.  Here’s a few picks.

Took me almost 2 hrs to clean up all the power cords.   :rotflol: :rotflol: :rotflol:
The AC is back on.
My cousin showed up a few hrs ago.
He came to help my aunt, which will give me a break.
He is staying here as she still hasn't got power, and she won't leave her place.

Tomorrow Donna has some surgery.
So, my cousin being here, allowing me the time to be with Donna is a good thing.

Thanks guys.

She had some skin cancer removed from the top of her head today.
She has more to have removed in 2 weeks.
It's freaking her out as you can imagine.

Long day.
Went in at 8am.
Left there about 2PM.

Two sessions.
The first didn't get it all, so they had to peel more skin off and retest.

Afterwards, two skin grafts with 17 stiches outside, 9 inside, and 11 staples.

Now she is dealing with the pain.
I want to take it away for her but I can't.
Helpless.
Tonight, will be rough.

The worst part is that she has more to have removed in 2 weeks.
That remaining cancer is slightly smaller, still..............

Sux!!!

Again, thanks!

She's in there now Wally.
She was REALLY looking forward to it.
This morning the head hurt slightly less she said.

When she is finished, we are heading to the landfill.
 :thumbup_smilie:

I'm a regular over there.
It's about 8-10 miles from my house.
We generated so much cardboard from the move, and Amazon purchases to outfit the house, it's easier to simply break down the boxes, fill my truck, and haul it to the dump.
Leaving it for trash day means it's part of the "recycle" waste.
That stuff goes into a blue garbage tote, and I would need 100 of them to handle the cardboard each week.
This will probably be the last trip I think.

Title: Re: Soon to be retired
Post by: Mac Attack on Oct 14, 2022, 12:38 PM
Donna is doing much better guys.
I'm very happy for that.

However...........................

Here's the new "shaft up my butt" -

Most of you know we bought a motor home.
And we did a ton of work to it - $$$
Well, a tree came down on it during the hurricane.
And the insurance company is totaling it.
We are unsure of the amount, but I went online and looked up the NADA and it is somewhere between $15-18K.
We have about $40k into it.
lol   :rotflol: :rotflol: :rotflol:

Here's is where it really gets good.

The insurance company now tells me the deductible is $10,000

A month or so back I decided to take it off the road.
So, I also decided to remove the glass coverage and the collision to save a few bucks.
I kept the comprehensive of course.
The original deductible was $1000.
During the change, the deductible "somehow" got changed.
I didn't ask for it or approve it.
However, the new policy came in the mail, and I never noticed that change.
So..........I never questioned it or had it converted back to $1000.

So now I have roughly a $40,000 motorhome that the insurance company is totaling for maybe $15-18,000 (or whatever), and my deductible is $10,000 of that.
So, my loss will probably be in the $30,000+ neighborhood that I will have to eat.

Too late once they start the process.
I'm researching all of my options.  Including FEMA.
I still don't have a definitive answer from Gieco on everything.

Donna got her 2nd surgery today.
Just got home, after taking her for ice cream, because she was a good patient.   ;)
They didn't remove the stiches and staples from the first surgery because it didn't look healed enough.
They will wait for 2 more weeks and reanalyze.
The spot removed today required 2 attempts to get it all, as the previous one did.
The spot today was a lot smaller than the first, so it only required half as many stiches and no staples.
No skin graft either.
All in all, she did well.
Next 2-3 days will be rough for my patient.

She is sore today.
But not like the first one she had removed 2 weeks ago.
This one was a lot smaller, and not as deep.

I have an insurance inspector coming today to inspect the house damage from the storm.
Has nothing to do with the motorhome - still waiting to hear something concrete on that.
Still glad we are finally moving forward on the home though.
Title: Re: Soon to be retired

Inspection went well I think.
We will see what the final $$ is in a couple weeks he said.
I also spoke to Gieco on the motorhome.
I got some “unofficial” semi-good news but will refrain from saying exactly until we get the official notice late next week.

This hurricane is still going to cost us a lot of money.

Time heals.

I’m not nearly as pi$$ed off as I was a week or two back.  It’s only money and we are still alive.

Onward.

Hope you get good news from Geico soon 🤞🏻
How’s Donna doing?

Donna is way better this round.
The cancer size was less that 1/4 of the previous one.
So, even though they needed to cut twice like they did for the first batch, they didn't have to remove anywhere near as much surface area as last time to get it all.
Only a few stiches, no staples, and no skin grafts either.
So her pain is significantly less.
Now she heals.
Goes back in 2 weeks to get the staples from the first surgery out and hopefully all of the stiches.
Last night she slept in the bed instead of the chair!!
Overall, she is doing well.
Thanks.

Thanks guys.
I have passed on your well wishes to Donna.
Next Monday we go back for her staples and stiches to be removed.

I got a good call from Geico on the motorhome yesterday.
They have agreed to lower the $10,000 deductible to $1000.
Not the $500 that it actually was, but a far easier pill to swallow.
Now to wait until the adjuster contacts me in a couple days to see what the final payout will be.
I'm still going to lose my shirt on this thing, but we'll see what happens.
Baby steps.

Well last least that's an improvement!

Yup

Just got off the phone with the adjuster.
His number was better than I feared, but still $15k below what we had invested into the motorhome.

So I started horse trading with him.

I sent him all my receipts.
Which totaled over $18k.
He called me back to say they cannot do anything about the labor in those receipts as it doesn’t increase the value of the motorhome.  I don’t agree.

Say you buy additional overload springs to enhance the unit.  These are worthless without the installation.

Anyway, they are looking at getting the number higher for me.

Stay tuned to this channel.

Finalized things on the motorhome.
They raised their figure by about $435.
Still about $15k below what we had into it.
Need to FedEx the title to them tonight.
They will pick up the motorhome early next week.
Then we will have a wire to our bank account for the funds.
Not good, but closure.

Onward.

Got the gutters on the back of the house cleaned out this morning.  Nice strong ladder.  Which is good cause I’m scared of heights.

The wrecker came and picked up the motorhome earlier too.  Should see the money in our acct the next couple/few days.

Still waiting to hear the results on the house claim.  Supposed to hear on this later this week or early next week.  Then I start the contractor hunt.

Yup
Gut another one headed this way.
It’s way smaller and will travel across the state before getting here; losing a lot of its force.
Wind and rain.
We are expecting maybe 45-50 mph winds.  A far cry from the 150-155 mph winds from Ian.
We buttoned things up here earlier.
Should be fine.

Nice but I don’t see any fishing rods…

I know Dom.
I kept thinking about the fact I coulda been dragging lures behind 2 rods for the whole trip.
I was only idling.
750-850 rpm - like only 1.9-3 mph the entire time.

Next time.
But not the scheduled boat trip on 12/6 we have planned.
There will be 6 other people on board.   And Macy of course.   8)

Post by: Mac Attack on Nov 19, 2022, 02:05 PM
I started this in another thread and decided it really belonged here -

I will always miss Fall perchin.

And of course, a few other things.
But there are a few things down here that I can do that take their place.
There is no "perfect" place in the world.
No matter what anyone says or thinks.
What someone else likes, isn't always what others might enjoy.
And vice-a-versa.

From say November thru May, it's really awesome down here.
Otherwise, it's hot and humid.
If you cannot handle heat and humidity.................

As many know, originally, we were going to keep the lake place and do 5 months up there, and 7 down here.
We simply didn't want the extra "everything" that is required to own 2 places.
The work, the 1500 mile move twice a year, double the problems, increased security requirements, stress, cost, etc.
Donna brought this up to me Fall of 2021 when I was winterizing the lake place.

To be honest, our actual original plan was to move down here permanently.
But along the way a few years back we decided to give "snowbirding" a try and decided to upgrade everything out at the lake for our summers.
After the 2 years of building the new place Donna asked me "Aren't we supposed to be simplifying our life in retirement?".
I thought about it and decided she was right.
I asked her if she was 100% sure because once we sold the lake place, we couldn't get it back.
She was sure.

Soooooo.....................we now party down here.

The hurricane really took its toll on us and really tested our intentions.
We still haven't received the insurance numbers yet.
Afterwards, we then will need to bring in contractors to bid on the repairs and some changes I want to make.
So it is frustrating that we still really aren't "settled in".

The motorhome is gone.
We lost a bunch of cash on that deal, but as Doris Day sang about, "que será, será".
This, however, did allow us to move forward on the boat purchase.
I think the boat will allow us to get and away from things occasionally to de-stress a little.
So that is good.

The main thing I need is more shed.
My shed is only 9x7.
It's packed and I have a 5 x 10 storage facility pretty full.
I'm going to double the shed to 18 x 7.
This has to be done by a licensed contractor according to our retirement community rules and regs.
So, I will have the same contractor do this and the repairs.
This means having to wait.
Probably until after the first of the year at least I'm thinking.

Baby steps.

Tonight, we going to see an Eagles tribute band.
I bought a VIP table that also includes a buffet.
We asked our neighbors to come with us.
Should be fun.

It's an artificial we bought 10+ years ago.
Our house up north was small (975 sq ft), so we looked for one that was narrower so it wouldn't take up the entire living room.
And I insisted it be LED lights.
Wasn't cheap, but in the long run..............

I don't do trees anymore. Too much work putting them up and taking down.  :rotflol:  If I had little kids it would be a different story.

Actually working in retail for several years ruined Christmas for me. Same Christmas songs over and over again 8 hours a day for 3 months straight.  I thought I would go berserk if I heard Grandma got run over by a Reindeer one more time!

Title: Re: Soon to be retired
Post by: Mac Attack on Nov 30, 2022, 08:07 AM
We still do it too as you already know.
The live trees down here aren't as prevalent as up north.
They set up large tents with pre-cut trees for sale.
Big red and white circus tents.
I'm not sure there's anywhere down here where you cut down a tree, although there are a ton of fir trees native to Florida.
Today I'm wiring together some jumbo xmas lights.
they are about 12" tall.
I got them at Home Depot.
They are LED and work off 3 AA batteries (4.5 VDC).
there is a small 6 hr timer board inside too.
So, when you turn them on, they shut off in 6 hrs.
But I want to hang them up high and also don't want to chew thru 3754 batteries in the next month.
So, I bought a 5 VDC power supply and some 20 ga 2 lead wire and are creating a strand I can hang.
I have 10 of these bulbs and will make two strands, each with 5 bulbs.
I'll take photos when I'm finished, and they are up.
This is my project for today........along with the other "normal" strings of lights.
Title: Re: Soon to be retired
Post by: Mac Attack on Dec 01, 2022, 02:05 PM
I gave up on the large bulb strings.
WAY too much BS trying to solder two leads of 20 ga wire and one lead of "like" 1000 ga wire to a tiny terminal with 66-year-old eyes and fingers.
On 10 of those large bulbs.
Ended up in far too many obscenities being screamed.
The neighbors now have a true idea of who/what I am.
LOL
 :rotflol: :rotflol: :rotflol:

We got the other lights up.
Did not do the screen room this year as we have windows and a door being installed at some point and didn't want the lights in the way.
I'll take a few photos later when it gets dark and they all turn on; then post them here.

The update -

I haven’t been very motivated to fish.
Basically, all (most) of my gear is in a storage facility.  My shed here is only 9’ x 8’ and it’s jam packed!!
I was in the process of looking into having it doubled in size.  Not simple as our park requires permits, engineering study, etc. before approval.  I never got anything done on this before the hurricane.

The insurance company seriously under payed me on the settlement.  I need a new roof, and a bunch of other repairs that will cost a lot of money.  So the shed project stalled.

I hired a PA to help me fight the insurance company.  The PA warned me up front this process will take about 4-6 months typically, but they assure me they will get me more money.  They get 10% of whatever extra money they get me, so it’s no cash out of my pocket to pay them.

Sooooo……… nothing happens for quite some time.

I’ve been tossing spoons and swim baits off the fishing pier here with little success.  However, I’ve only done that 3X.  I really need to pick up some frozen shrimp and squid.  I’ll then at least catch tons of saltwater cats.  This will at least scratch the itch.

Ok, now comes the boat.
Fishing from it would be better.
However, launching it from the local town launch isn’t simple.  The tides come into play, and the trailer needs to go WAY into the water for the boat to float off it.  This is common with pontoons.

Anyway, launching alone, or even with Donna sux.  Not impossible, but a big time PITA.

I’m looking for a boat lift for rent nearby.  There are a couple for $450-500/month.
With the insurance/repairs/shed up in the air, I’ve decided to wait on accepting a monthly expense like this, and the 12 month lease that comes with it.

So, everything is tied to this insurance thing.  Kinda.

We have more guests coming this Wednesday for 3-4 days.  When they leave I’ll have a little more time to set up a few bait rods - and scratch that fishing itch.  I made a promise to myself to do this.

Lastly, my brother is still in very rough shape.  He was moved from Sarasota Memorial to a rehab facility closer to me.  I spend time here and there visiting him.

My life is pretty convoluted.  Retirement was supposed to be less crazy.  Lol

Oh well.  I don’t work for a living anymore.  🙄

Donna and I went down to the fishing pier and tossed some spoons and swim baits.  No fish were harmed.  Nice relaxing evening.
