Title: Bat houses?
Post by: taxid on Apr 26, 2021, 09:03 AM
I have bats between my fireplace and attic and other than blocking them out once they leave at night, I'd also like put up a bat house nearby for them to relocate. Doing research it appears mulichamber is better (1 to 4 chambers at least 20 inches in height and 16 inches wide.) Other than a "designer" series on line that has a ridiculous price to it,  the bat houses I run into are don't fit the above criteria.  I guess I could build one but time of essence right now. But may end up doing it.

Anybody have any leads on bat houses the fit the above criteri? I don't mind spending money but 200 to 300 dollars seems a little silly for a bat house. Always stayed away from things that are "designer" as that's usually over priced and for Yuppies.

I notice a lot of the ones I see for sale are probably made in China. Would prefer USA.

Thank you Brad!

No problem I would hate to see you evict them and not have a place for them to go. You might get your self in hot water with the Covid 19 no eviction stuff going on 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. If you provide a new place you should be ok. Before anyone jumps all over me it's just a joke

No worries.  :rotflol:

I do know a lot of our native bats have been wiped out by a virus. Not the same one of course. I found a sick one a couple of years ago. Weak and couldn't fly.

If I was looking I would turn to the Cornell Cooperative Extension here in NY. Looks like Purdue has something similar. Give them a call and see

Thank you gentlemen. I went ahead and ordered the one Brad gave a link to. It fits the criteria I found for bat houses after doing some research.

The fun part will be putting the ladder in position. It's a monster aluminum ladder that weighs a ton, and the area where the bats go in and out of is at least 25 feet above the deck which is about 10 feet above the ground. (It's where the stone ends under the roof). I need to get the ladder on the deck with no help. Yee Haw! My back will be sore for a few days. And I have starlings making a mess up there too.

I used be uncomfortable at heights but got over that maintaining and staining the log home.  I had no choice. :rotflol:

Mount it on a pole way away from the house. They’re messy little buggers.
I’ve built a few. They’re pretty simple . Where you put them is the most important.

Don't wait too long as I hope to have all the trout out by the end of May or sooner before the ospreys show up. I'll be shutting down the trout pond permanently after that. Make you sure you contact me before coming out for an appointment and specifics if you decide to fish.

Thanks again for the link.

Be careful on that ladder. I spent years up and down ladders.

Ladders are why man invented the bucket truck.

Thanks for the concern, but although I'm not afraid of heights anymore I still have very healthy respect for them. And I don't look down!

I wish I could use a bucket but it would have to be a really long one as the deck is in the way.

I ran them up to 135’. Never had an issue.

Took a fall off an extension ladder in the 70’s. All I did was make a wrong move and out it went from under me. Smashed wrist, broken ribs and black and blue stripes from my knees to my neck. Landed on top of the ladder with my wrist under it.

Not any fun at all. They set it two times. I was sure the Inquisition was back in town.

Take your time and be careful.

I fell of my 20’ extension ladder 3 weeks ago.  Only 6-7 steps up but I cut my fingers up and sprained my wrist.
No more.
I’m done.

Send your kid up the ladder. Only ladder I have is 5’ tall.

Way back when I first started with the lighting company I was on the crew changing lightbulbs and retrofitting fixtures. All day long up and down 8, 10, 12’ and extension ladders. Then after a couple other guys got hurt in falls we bought a couple scissors lifts and a tow behind 35’ boom. Eventually we.
 bought a bucket truck.

That was immediately mine and mine alone. I ran around the state servicing exterior lighting and signs. I was the only guy who knew what he was doing with that stuff. My partner and I serviced signs and lighting that were up to 100’ in the air. I really liked running the big lifts. Nobody bothered us when we worked on the big stuff. He was the only guy I’d go up in a lift with. I miss working with Edgar. He was a good guy and a good friend....and almost as fast as me.

After I fell I did.
Called my youngest to come over and finish the job for me.
I was replacing some siding that was peeling off from a heavy wind.
No more!
A 6’ step ladder is now my limit.

I needed an TV antenna changed out at the peak of the roof, and the guy came out to do it and took one look and said, "no!" and left. As you can see the pitch is quite steep.  :rotflol: This was before I had a metal roof installed. At least there is some grip with shingles.

An Amish crew was building my garage and an apartment above it at the time, and one of the boys hopped up there and got the job done. No fear whatsoever. But then I've seen them walk back and forth upright on ridge posts like it's no big deal.

I bought a 5 chamber house that will hold up to 600 bats. Screws will be replaced with stainless steel and the top sealed a little better. The outside of the backboard will be painted as it's only plywood unlike the rest of the house that is cedar. The organization for bat conservation ceased to exist in 2018 so I'm sure it's just a selling gimmick. That said I think it will do the job.
