Title: What a Launch
Post by: sbfpa_Mike on Jul 04, 2006, 01:51 PM
For those of you who didn't see the Space Shuttle Discovery launch, you missed an AWESOME spectacle. NASA did an incredible job with cameras and audio for the TV viewers to really see how things go. GREAT JOB NASA. :flag: :flag: :flag: :flag: :flex: :flex: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

Did anyone else see what looked like a "tile" fall off after the main tank separated ? It was on the middle right half of the screen . ???

If you can ever see a launch in person, by all means do it. I was fortunate enough to attend the John Glenn return to space in 1998. I was on top of a motorhome that was parked in front of all the media (CBS,NBC,CNN, etc.) It is the most incredible thing that I have ever witnessed (and felt). Istill get goosebumps just thinking about it.

Stuff has fallen off of every shuttle launch since the beginning.  People are just hypersensitive to it now.  It is designed to survive with a certain percentage of tiles missing.  Check out photos of past shuttle landings and you'll see spots on the craft where tiles have come off.  Quite frankly, if people were this concerned with NASA and astronaut safety during the Apollo program we would never have made it to the moon.  The Apollo craft were made with duct tape and toggle switches  :o!

What absolutely blows my mind is the velocity at which they travel...when they last showed the trajectory table, it listed the velocity at around 11,000 MPH!!!!   :o :o :o :o The fact that they can attain speeds that fast is completely mind-boggling...

2.3 billion sounds about right to me. Those things are so expensive. I personally am not a big supporter of the NASA program, but I find it absolutely mind boggling what those men and women ( and vehicles) do. 17,000 mph! Can you imagine that? Going 100 and something on a roller coaster was enough for me.

I agree with you on the entire statement and add that the world has far more important things to spend money on besides a pipe dream of living on the freaking moon .
Lets find a cure for cancer and aids . Lets feed and vaccinate children that cant fend for themself and the list could go on and on ! just my .02

The shuttle is a cool piece of equipment and it does have other uses than trying to find signs of past life on the moon but if they can do things like this ... Why is it that all these countries involved in the international space station program cant see that there are so many other more important things to do with all that money .
There are literally billions of dollars spent each year by each of the countries involved and they cant see that some of that money and technology should be spent on finding tyrants like BinLaden or disease research !
Something wrong with the worlds priorities I think . Some people need to take a step back in time and enjoy life for what it is and not for what it could be .
Technology sometimes isn't what its always cracked up to be .
