As requested, let us know what you perfer
-
who requested this?
this is going to be pretty dang lopsided
-
No contest...ice, ice, ice, and more ice. It cant get here too soon, or stay too long!! I think about icefishing a little more often than sex, and that doesn't leave a lot of thinking for anything else
-
While I love to open water fish, I chose icefishing...there's just something about it that's just addicting. I love the feeling I get when I'm catching tons of perch and they suddenly disappear (on the Vex) and suddenly one mark appears all by itself...because I just know that the strike I'm about to get is going to be from a pike or a walleye, or a big bass. ;D The steady action is nice too... PLUS...Seeing a flag go up is one of the most exciting things in fishing  , because you just don't know what's going to be on the other end...If you don't get excited when a flag goes up and you can see a fish taking line from your spool, there's something wrong! :D ;D ;)
Bring on the ice! 8)

:rotflol: :rotflol: :rotflol:
although there are a few people on here from down south that think ice is something that goes in your drink
-
Icefishing without a doubt. Been going for 30+ years and it never gets old.
-
No contest, give it to me frozen! :thumbup_smilie:
-
the open water guys seem to want to stay anonymous ???
-
it doesn't matter to me either way but i said open do to the fact you can catch a bigger variety of fish ;D
-
I'll take ice all year, i hate this weather, high nineties tomorrow.
-
I think my usual away messege sums it up:
"warm beer may be warm but it's still beer.....but everyone knows it's much better ICE COLD!
down at the river waiting for it to freeze"
90+ for the next few days is making me want the ice even more
-
flyfishing VS. icefishing
i picked icefishing. very close though..
id say deciding factor is that i can flyfish all year round(bow river stays open) but ice is limited
-
open water fishing is just to pass time untill first ice!!!!!!!!
billybono
-
I chose Ice fishing as I have more time in the winter than the Summer what with all the haying that needs to be done doesn't leave much time :( I have only been out 4 times this summer but I'm hoping that will change since my cousin got a boat ;D
-
dont forget the fact you can pull all your stuff out with you with regular ease, cookout with all your buddies, keep your beer cold, wander the lake without wasting gas, NO BUGS, hop in your shanty for an afternoon nap, play catch while waiting for a flag, you always know when your buddy has a fish because he screams flag at the top of his lungs, so theres no lying about the one he caught an no one was around to see, etc, etc, etc...
-
thanks guys....i guess now that this is in my head im going to respool my tip-ups.....were only a little over 5 1/2 months away :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:
i HATE the hot weather...once its above 90 for more than a day you can smell every single thing that has been dead in the woods for the past 6 months

billybono
My thoughts exactly.
-
What first important thing You can now buy beer before noon on sunday?
I chose Ice because it is soo addicting and after spending 64 days on the ice last season its now addicting as ever :) something about sitting still and being able to jig that gets me going.
-
I like open water fishing, but ICE FISHING gets my vote. ;D The season is shorter, but the fun is much better. Coming from the south as a boy to NY as a teenager, I did start icefishing till in my mid-20's and never even knew I could still fish thru the winter. And to catch fish thru a little hole in the ice, no way, but from the first time I did it, I was HOOKED. The walls close in on ya during the winter if you can't do anything, and now, the walls still close in on me if I don't get out at least 1-2 times a week. ;D And know that I have a sonar fishfinder for the ice, isn't hard to keep me off the ice. 8)
Bring on the ice, it's less than a 1/2 year away. :o The month of Dec. sucks until the ice firms up. ;D
-
up until two years ago i thought that ice fishing was a joke. not any more. as soon as things firm up i'll be out there as often as possible. ;D
-
Ice hands down....its going to be more than just lopsided lol.....you can prepare for the cold, but there's nothing you can do about the heat, bugs, storms, poison this, poison that...you can keep warm properly prepared, but you cannot stay cool if the temps climb crazily....plus...I like the fact that once you drop anchor, your in one spot......awesome...Grump
-
Open water, why sit in one spot to wait for fish when you can go find them.
When theres ice on your lake though, what else can you do? ???
I wish I had the time to ice fish, but it seams like its a PATIENCE game and I just dont seem to have that!
I dont even sit in a tree stand for hunting,I GO FIND DEER!
-

If you have a power auger and a portable shanty, why sit in one spot? Sometimes I will run a reef into deep water, and the auger never has the chance to cool down. I don't think ice fishing is a patience game, guys with patients don't catch as many fish as the guys who go "run em' down".
-
that's right, pop holes in every piece of ice you think that the fish are hiding under. icefishing can be as little or as much waiting as you chose to make it. i find that the more i move the better i do. i love to "run em' down."
-

I bought a power auger for last years "Whitney Point Crappie Derbie",But it got cancelled due to not enough ice! :(
I guess ice fishing is a sport you need to be aquired to "LIKE" that is,sorta like the taste of spinnache...

well attending events like that i can understand why you feel like you do ;)
thats a stupid zoo!!!!
i was fishing on ice that day about 100 miles away, while they claimed lack of ice there.......
nothing like zero degrees at 4 am, hot coffee, driving to the spot!!! except, setting up your first tip up, going to set up the second and the alarm on the first one goes of!!!
sorry jet, i live to ice fish....i icefish to live

Alright I guess I'm going to be in te miniority, but OPEN WATER all the way. Don't get me wrong-I love ice fishing, but there is something about warm weather and being in a boat that i can't get enough of. Hardwater fishing has it's fair share of excitement but i would much rather catch a nice brookie or salmon flyfishing.
-

I agree, and there is so much more opportunities to fish with open water.
And dont forget that the winter cold sucks!!!!!!!
But this thread is a double edged sword.
When theres hard water there is not alot of open water.
So maybe it should say I.E: Summer VS Winter What do you perfer???? ???
-
nah, I love ice fishing but i guess i love the open water a little more nothing like drifting a bobber at the niagara river,or casting a spoon for steelhead or salmon in the harbors of lake erie and ontario.wading chautauqua lake in the wee hours of the am for walleye.Dont get me wrong theres nothing like jigging for those big gills at silver lake through the ice, or the walleyes and white perch at chautauqua through the ice.I guess its kind of a trick question when you think about it. If it was january probably would have said ice fishing who knows....
-

like was said earlier, you can keep warm outdoors in the cold, your stuck with the heat
i dont see how the opportunities are greater with open water ???
unless your like thestanimal, and would rather cast a fly, thats all that ice fishing limits you? casting
When theres hard water there is not alot of open water.
im kind of confused by that ???
-
im kind of confused by that ???
I edited sorry.
It might of cleared it up.
-
I really like ice fishing ! But I also like to troll just off the beach on hot hot day!!BB
-
This is a very hard one for me.
I love ice-fishing because I get to hang out with friends, party, and the fish are a bonus. Some crazy things have happened and the advantages listed above definitely apply...
I love open-water because I am better at it and can actually focus on the task at hand.
What to vote? I'm going to flip a coin...
:afro:
-
Sorry to disprove your theory Arch, but I gotta pick OPEN water.
why? thers 10 people that voted open?
how many admitted it?
either way, as long as were all fishing
-
i love them both. i can come up with just as many good points for both. i'm with d-man, gimmi a coin 8)

You icefish just like you would in your boat. You still fish breaks, weedlines and supended fish. If your flasher isn't showing fish just move somewhere's else.
-
Ice fishing hands down, I don't get a chance to open water fish much. But I don't mind the warm weather. I know that some of you guys get unbearable heat, and it's been a hot summer here, but I dread to hear the day my furnace kicks in. $$$$$. I plan to burn a lot more wood this year.
-
I voted ice- its fun if you set tipups cuz then you can mess around but if you jig and move it gets tiring- i love to setup 6 tipups on a underwater hill and just sit around and talk- maybe jig for tasty perch
I wish iceout was way better here for trout though
Gotta buy some more tipups- christmass prescent- and ice armor gloves to stay warm- good boots too'
gotta stay dry and protected from wind- thats why I dont like openwater- the waves keep you from fishing an exact spot- fish are grouped up better too
il be doin the ice alot this year
-
Ice all the way ,its a sickness ;D I had to do a large amount of reasearch but finally found some close by,40 miles Nothing but rainbow and brookies though. Sure do miss the panfish and walleyes thru the ice .
-
Ice fishing hands down
Now I just got to find a job back north where there actually is ice :-\
-
I have to vote for ICE FISHING!!! I rarely fish open water but I get onto to the ice as soon as it is safe and fish as often as possible. Even with our rather short and thin season last year I managed 12 days of ice fishing and one day of cutting the shanty out of Saratoga Lake! Let's all hope for more ice next year.
-
as much as i love jiggin up lakers in the middle of the summer I would have to say icefishing takes first place. I love jigging and its a lot easier to jig verticly when your not movin all over the place in a boat! Plus im young so the cold doesnt bother me. Besides, thats what my portable is for! I have a little heater inside so half the time we are in t-shirts anyways!!!

Love them both, its all fishin! but i have to choose here, and because of that, i choose open water. Mainly because I seem to find alot more time and oppurtunity to get out in the spring , summer and fall and can always find good conditions somewhere. Last years Ice season here in WNY was less than stellar. And for some reason i always find myself down at ghetto beach or small boat harbor. If i jumped around some of the inland lakes, i might enjoy ice a little more.
-
As much as I enjoy the ice, my vote goes to open water. I love getting out in the boat on a calm, cool morning with the fog rising off the lake and the loons calling.
-
Good call flip
-

maybe its because i dont have a boat, but i would much rather walk out onto the ice with the fog all around, no noise from engines, seeing the deer cross back over the ice from licking the salt near the road back into the woods and hearing that coyote up on the hill whinning, drilling my first hole and dropping that first tip-up down, setting up my shanty and cracking a beer  plus its alot more exciting to see that flag pop up than a rod tip twitch  JMO
-
Could use some ice today for sure. I seem to find more time to ice fish lately so I'm going with that.
-
I love ice fishing, but I catch a lot more fish during the open water season.
-
I really love them both but for me the open water scene is more productive and easier on the back. Plus I won't die if I fall in most of the time. I also get to fish with my dad and my kids as where an ice season like last year made it virtually impossible to take the oldsters and the youngsters.
-
You guys are all crazy ??? Go back to IceShanty :) :P :P :D
Billybono...
Ice fishing is a past time to make the winter months go by quicker .....Although, as you all know, I am an ice fishing addict but nothing's better that waking up on a cool summer morning and launching the boat to a foggy sunrise!!
-
ice hands down, more time available in winter----although i should make more time during the open water season
-
I love to ice fish. No sunburn, no bugs, and the fishermen usually out number everyone else out there. Being able to meet and fish with lots of different people is probably the best part of icefishing. IMHO
Don't get me wrong. I'll go fishing anytime I get the chance.

Yeah, theres nothing better than takin a week full of dewy mornings out on the Lake, gettin some rays by late morning, catching some fish in between, and looking forward to goin back to camp to grab lunch, and take a snooz then gettin back up to go right back out again for a couple hours, takin your own sweet time lol. This time your lookin forward to goin back for a charcoal grilled steak dinner, then back out again for the evening bite. No more meals left, so this time your coolin off and cant wait to get back to camp and set up a nice campfire......put your feet up, open a couple cold beers and realize ya got 6 more days of it!!! Head in and catch a good nights sleep to start all over again the next day!! Nothing like an open water, warm weather fishing vacation! NOTHING!!!
-

thats what i like about ice fishing, you dont have to go anywhere to do all of that, no going back in, just fish and have fun
-
Oh dont get me wrong, i love being out in the winter.....I think im the only one around that keeps his fingers crossed when the weather man mentions a Snow squall advisory lol. Or is upset when it stops snowing out. Im HUGE on winter, LOVE IT! but if im gonna fish in the snow and Ice, It'll probably be on the streams trying to find open water to float somethin by a steelheads nose. I truly dont understand how people live down south where the leaves are always green and on the trees, the water is always warm, ya keep the same wardrobe in the closet all year round, and all ya fish for are large mouth bass (lol j/k) Anyway, I get everyones points to Icefishing, in fact i think one of the coolest things about icefishin is goin on the ice during a good snowfall, getting in the hut, and firin up the lantern, sittin there fishin in a t-shirt and watching the wind blown snow whip by your plastic window , somethin cool about that.
-

i dont think i could live down south :-\
-
After reading all posts, I choose Icefishing. ??? Yes, I live in the south. Everyone has priorities, I had mine when I moved here. Ice does not have enough of a positive economic impact in my house, soo. :nono: The reason I choose ice; It levels the playing field. Strip away all the electronic gizzmos, you and I have the same chance on the ice. :flex: Strip away all the electronic gizmoos in the summer, you still have a boat and I don't. :'(
Mike

Keep the fridge closed until fall :D
-
Keep the fridge closed until fall :D
3 of the 4 pics in your signature are on the ice, would you like to change your answer ??? ;D
-
It was a tough one for me I catch more fish in the open water but the heat sucks, the pleasure boats suck, and the fact that I can only fit one other person on my boat sucks. Therefore I choose ice because a large group can hang out, drink beer, watch flags, and jig up some perch, gills or eyes.
And as stated earlier you can always warm up but sometimes you just can't cool off. Especially when its freakin 99 degrees outside.
BTW thanks Bassjunky
-
Any time you can fish is a good time. I can't pick one that I like more. I have all the gear to fish either way so I am all set. We should add a both catagory for those of us who are standing on the fence and like the looks on both sides. I do like the looks of a Landlocked Salmon tail walking behind my boat, but I like the tug of a 10 pound touge on a jig stick.
-

I like the feeling of a tug on my jig stick too!
-
Its refreshing being on the ice by 5 30 in the morning-I keep two spair sets of cloths under the seat
I always got some deer soup from the crock pot and an ice cold drink- hell its hardly about the fish ;D
-
It's a tough call for me but I went with ice because  ICEFISHING RULES
I think it is because it's more social than open water
-
Ice definately. For alot of the reasons previously mentioned. Especially no heat and bugs. Also no noise from engines continuosly on ice.
Nothing beats being on ice and the fog rolling in. Dead silent all around you for 50 miles until the howling of a pack of wolves on shore makes the hair on your back stand up.
Around here in BC we have to occasionally (in summer) get confronted with bears. They like the same areas I do. I usually leave. In winter they are hibernating :thumbup_smilie:
In winter it is much easier to get to your destination as the ground is frozen. In summer sometimes you have to 4X4 and winch into an area for the whole day. Kind of get played out. Reminds me of my days pulling cable when logging. Winching and 4X4ing sounds fun to someone that hasn't done it alot.
I like fishing with not alot of people around so less people on ice.
-
open water all the way, maybe its something about age difference but I HATE COLD!, and i dont mind the heat. the mosquitos havent been bad at all this year either
maybe the fact that i catch wayyyy more fish in summer helps to ;D
-

ha im just pullin yer leg

You guys are all crazy ??? Go back to IceShanty :) :P :P :D
Billybono...
Ice fishing is a past time to make the winter months go by quicker
says who???? you???? thats crazy talk.........salmon season is just a way to make winter come quicker ;) it is nice to see this site pick up compared to this year.....the shanty should be off the chain when the REAL fishing starts ;)
1 more thing...farmers and icefishermen make the best engeneers!!!!!! i have a 17 year degree in both ;)
billybono
-
Open water fishing for me. It’s more productive and you have more water to fish.
-
just wondering but dont they have electric motors in canada?
ha im just pullin yer leg
I have one but the yahoos that are on same lake as me generally don't. Guess thats why sometimes I like to go to electric motors only lake. I'm talking real silence bud, not the humm from the electric motor.
I find way more water to fish in winter when compared to summer because I'm not hindered by 7ft waves on some big lakes here. Also in winter I'm not drifting over that sweet spot, I'm directly above it, not moving. Much more productive in winter, ya just gotta move a bit. Summer fishing makes me fat. Winter I'm moving more to find fish. Summer way to easy.
Makes me lazy and looking for the easy way.
Flyfishing can be fun and I'm going to try it on ice this year with my chronimids and Marmish rod :w00t:
To each his own ;D
-
Ice fishing all the way...I can sit out there at minus 20 and enjoy myself.....but sitting in a boat with a heat index of 109 like we had yesterday?? I'm glad I wasn't out there....Esox
-

-
ice fishing is my favorite by far but the summer is also good cause of carp and riverjigging for walleye and pike
-
I have to go with ice fishing !!
Just seems to be more productive for me .
The ice fishing community is a lot friendlier too .
Theres nothing like waiting for that flag with some good friends along and a grill full of venison going .
-
I love going with 3-8 people plenty to talk about and a big enough spred to guarantee fish
Gotta love the guys that take a nap- tell ya to get any of there tipups- then 5 out of the 6 go off with perch- you sytart hootin and hollering and he grabs numer 6 with a screamer of a brown trout
Ice fishing is all about peace and generosity
Told my folks all I want for my bday/christmass is a cannon downrigger setup-ice jiggin combo- new scooper- my dads zute suit ( he said take it ;D ;D kept me sweating in -10) and some other icefishing gear
This sport sucks up alot of money- ive dumped 1k dollars in the last 2 months and not much too show for it
-
This sport sucks up alot of money- ive dumped 1k dollars in the last 2 months and not much too show for it
Haha thats cheap your still young wait till you factor in Boats, trailers, shanties, snowmobiles, 4 wheelers lol
-
Its hard to beat sitting out in a t-shirt at last ice....hardwater, no contest.
-
I picked open-water simply because the season is longer and I catch more fish. Not much beats a 20" trout 3 feet in the air with a #12 hare's ear stuck in his lip. Ice fishing is only | | that far behind though because the season is shorter and so much sweeter because of it. I can't really decide. Can I vote twice? ;D After saying that, not much beats a rod twitch on a frozen brookie lake just as the sun cracks the hillside in two either. Do I have to pick?
What is sweeter? I don't know......All I know is I want it to be HUNTING SEASON!

I see that the majority would rather be ice fishing. I would be willing to trade my 2hp Jiffy Stealth , my ice shack on wheels, all my ice fishing rods and tackle and my 2005 Ranger XL Twin to one of you that would rather be ice fishing in exchange for your Ranger Reata 1850. :o ::)  :rotflol:

I haven't quite figured that one out yet. ::)

The reason ice fishing is so popular it doesn’t cost much to fish. What equipment do you really need to get involved with ice fishing? Years ago ice fishing was for the die hard angler. Today anybody can do it. With more people getting involved the cost of the equipment will go up. Lake access is getting harder too find every year too. I’m not thinking about ice fishing this season but more boat fishing during the winter. Let’s enjoy the nice weather we are having. Don’t rush the boating season away. The Next 5 months open water fishing can be very productive. Screw the ice fishing.
-
Screw the ice fishing.
You're gonna regret saying that....... :o ::) :nono:

Cheap? if you wanna catch squat and sit on a bucket
clam shelter-300+

clothes+boots- 75 if your cheap
hand auger - 50 power auger 370
all this and your just getting started- maybe you meant to say its not hard to stay in the sport

and don't forget tip-ups @50 a piece plus bait (smetls) 9. dollars a doz,and my boots alone are 200. being able to walk on water ...priceless ;D
-
The Next 5 months open water fishing can be very productive. Screw the ice fishing.
Come on, Ray. I can't believe you said that! ;)
-
I will fish for anything, at any time of year, BUT......
I would rather walk on water.
-
I would rather walk on water.
Are you Chris Angel????
-
Are you Chris Angel????
???
-
Ice! Nothing like the race to a flag. Can't wait.
Pikeon!
-
???
ignore him, hes a dink
troutman, the next 5 months is great fishing, the best open water has to offer, but nothing compares to the few months we get on the ice, and your right, if you know what your doing its not too expensive, heck i got a nice brand new eskimo shelter off season for under $200, my 5 tip-ups where about $8 apiece, jigging poles at walmart $15-$25 apiece, $40 for my hand auger, and heck, anyone that hunts is mostly set anyway for clothes and boots so that doesnt really factor into the question, buy your stuff out of season when stored need to get rid of the stuff for the year and its really cheap so for under $400 you can be comfy out on the ice, its a short season and people are willing to spend the oney for it because it is for die hard fisherman
-
Are you Chris Angel????
No.
-
Lets just pray for a cold winter- not cold for 3 weeks then unsafe then cold the unsafe type deal
-
I voted open water.I mainly target salmon for their jumping abilities and the ice puts a little damper on their acrobatics.I'm also wayyyyy more successful on open water.well,at the fishing anyway ;D
-
I just voted open water, but ice is way ahead! :o
-
I just voted open water, but ice is way ahead! :o
the definition of corporal punishment is living without hardwater
-
I picked Icefishing! I only like icefishing more if we have enough ice to fish. Last winter sucked!!!!!!!!
-
Cheap? if you wanna catch squat and sit on a bucket
clam shelter-300+
vex-250
jigs+rod-at least 75 if you have an arsenal for pannys/bass/eyes
clothes+boots- 75 if your cheap
hand auger - 50 power auger 370
all this and your just getting started- maybe you meant to say its not hard to stay in the sport
Well...you don't need a Vex, and you don't need a clam...been ice fishing for almost 40 years now and have managed to get along just fine without having either....I don't mind sitting on the bucket and I catch a lot more than "squat"....
My buddies will tell you that I fish any kind of weather during the hard water season....and even in the most extreme cold days I don't spend 10 minutes in a shanty, if somebody has one. Esox

i almost feel like this should be said in a confessonal....
i am 24, i've been fishing since my dad thought i was big enough to hold a zebco 202, for almost 22 years now. i only started ice fishing three years ago. in those three years i have become, as some of you have said....ADDICTED!!!
if you live down south and have never brought perch up through the ice, i'd suggest saving some vacation days for early january and literally cath the fever.
my vote goes for ice fishing hands down.
i do fish the open water, but merely to tide me over...and to find different bodies of water to ice fish later in the year.
josh
-
I love fishing no matter what season, spring summer fall or winter. I fish all of them, no matter what the weather. Its just being out there, My vote would be in between. I usually only get to fish a lake that kind of dies in the winter, except for pike. But im out there anyway. In the summer its a great fishing lake. I do have to say im much better at open water fishing than I am icefishing but enjoy both
-
I never heard of anyone ice fishing around my neck of the woods. I have had passing thoughts about trying it maybe I should act on them this winter.
Derek
-
where's your neck of the woods ???
-
Eastern Kansas.

i'd send out your bigger buddy first :o ;D

I have developed a love of all seasons when it comes to fishing. I gave up hunting 10+ years ago to funnel all my time and money into fishing. I very much enjoy both the solitude and social aspects of icefishing, and have become quite fond of the elusive Silver Lake perch. In the same breath I also enjoy floating around with 40, 50 or more other boats before morning tournament blast-off, sucking in the 2 cycle exhaust that fills the air, and wondering if all the preparation I put in will make me competitive in that days event.
I simply cannot pick one season over the other. They are both quite different. I can't wait for each to begin and I'm sad when each ends.
-
very hard ice more the better..
last year i spent 180 days on the ice..
-
Ice for me, although I enjoy my spring fishing, ice fishing is my preference!
-

A fellow member and I were discussing this on Friday and I think that a lot of people choose ice because they don't have a boat.
Of course there will always be the ice maniacs, but I honestly believe owning (or having access to) a boat makes a HUGE difference...

I absolutely agree. Ice fishing opens up A LOT more territory to those who are used to being shorebound.
-
Open water for sure.I like to see the fish jumping and carrying on.I like to cast and retrieve.Jiggin to me is almost as boring as trolling.Wake me up when the fish hits.Tip ups are the same.Wake me up when the flag pops ok? ??? ??? Although Lance has showed me that theres definitely an art to jiggin em up.
Ice is cold too.Not to mention getting out to the spots. If you don't have a quad or a snowmobile its a whole lot of walking.Cold walking I might add. :-\ Not to mention the fact you could all of a sudden be walking along and the next second trying to swim out of freezing cold water all bundled up.
I'm too fond of launching my boat or canoe and motoring over to my spots. If you prefer river fishing as I do the ice is usually non existent or too iffy to go on.Nothing about it appeals to me other than hanging out with some buddies and partying ;D.I know you guys love it but fishin isn't half as much fun on the ice compared to open water for me.To each his own.I love seeing all the pics over at IS during the winter. All the pics keep me going through the winter and anxiously awaiting spring. This year I'm going to try to get out more and see what all the hub bubs about. :o I might even buy an ice rod and a few tip ups.
-

Don't give up yet !!
Ice fishing takes a lot of patients and you have to put your time in as you would with open water or hunting .
If you hooked up every time you went out it would be called catching not fishing .
Stay with Big Red he'll hook you up .

No offence BB,but doesnt anyone take into consideration that fish are more active during warmer weather? And you can catch way more fish during this time.
IMO its more of a "LOVE THE STYLE'" of fishing than actualy catching fish. Its sorta like a Fly Fisherman against a Spin Fisherman.Purists against a meat hog,I guess I just dont get it.
-
exactly...ice fishing sucks...your right ! stay home!!!!!!! lakers are such good fighters in the summer ::) ::) ::) ::) and drilling holes isnt any fun ::) ::) ::)

your 100 percent right...stay off www.iceshanty.com and stay off the frozen lakes...its no fun whatsoever

Ice fishing doesnt suck, dont get me wrong BB.But to say Winter fishing is better than Summer fishing "BY CATCHING STANDARDS" is wrong IMO.

IMO.
key word
i have never seen or heard anyone say anything about a difference in volume, although the fish tase better from the ice cold water, you have no bugs, you can hang out with your buddies, eat and drink all you want ??? i have by far gotten skunked more on the open water than on the ice

That is alot of Pike BB,WOW!

Tough for you to keep that nice tan though.
hehehe
But my auger is far better on fuel than my boat!
I know arch.....I'm still loosing it.
Mac
yes you are
you have to admit though after a day on the ice you come home with worse racoon eyes than youll ever get on the water, and your boat gets good fuel when i drive
-
im a huge icefishing fan. i like the idea of putting myself in the perfect position, no waves......no boats or jetskis to contend with. plus, the cold, fresh air is good for you. i get more exercise in the winter than anyone in the state of michigan i think. i welcome the freezing weather with open arms. its much easier to stay warm, than it is to escape the heat ;D

I'd have to say I feel the same way. I get mad when its not cold in the winter. I prolly get as much exercise as you huffin all over the lakes of Oakland county.
BB thats looks like a great day on the ice. WTG man!! I can't wait for ice

Really Ponticrack lake was the only one that was safe all year.
I'm looking forward to a few meals of bluegills. Sittin in the shanty, drinking beer, going through some cargo and watchin flags
-
i dissagree good buddy....a lil drive of less that 50 miles would have revealed all the ice you could ever want...i only got denied on ice once all year...and i fished 3 or 4 times a week ;)

Yeah, i didn't venture real far last winter. I usually fish on sodus (which had about 2 weeks of good ice). I'm not one to venture out on 2-3 inches. I like a good 8 in.s +. I did my annual trip to black lake....nada. It happened to be the 2 coldest days of the year. We got skunked, froze our a**es off and spent most of the weekend in the camp or bar drinking. The first day it was so windy you couldn't bring a tent shanty (60 mph winds) and it was -35 with the wind chill. I guess i'm more of a fair weather ice fisherman. It was so cold that the insulated bait bucket turned into a popsicle in 20 min.s (in the shanty w/ a 2 heaters going). The year before at black, it was sunny (warm enough you took your jacket off) and the fish were biting (100+ perch and 20 pike). That was fun!! The ice was 2 feet thick and we drove our vehicles out to "the spot." ;) That was real cool!!
-
Bill -
He's speaking about catching fish I believe.
Not about having ice to fish attop.
I think he wants the fish to jump out of the hole into his bucket.
Probably not used to actually FISHING.
Sounds like he more used to CATCHING.
Sucks when there's a bit of work involved to locate fish that bite.
;)
Just an observation.
Mac
Mac, i was referring to both. I only got out a couple of times and got skunked both times. I do "work" at it. It would be nice if they jumped into the bucket. But i enjoy the fishing more than the flesh. I'm just a scardy cat when the ice goes from open water one week to 3 in.s the next...then thaws...re-freezes. I've had my fair shares of coming REAL close to going in the drink. I guess my bitterness also had to do with the lack of snow last year too...since i'm an avid snowmobiler. I need my winter "activities" to stay sane. Which i think you are. :D
-
Just an observation
Mac,
Who are you Isaac Newton?? :D
(i don't know if you saw the movie "Dazed and Confused"....that was a pretty funny scene)

I thought it was the f-bomb :o....so i figured i'd keep it CLEAN!! ;D
-
Man this is a tough poll, I love them both. :)
I will have to vote for open water thought, like others have said nothing like taking the boat out a 5:00 or 6:00am and watching the audience of wildlife at this time of year.
I usually move around alot more during the summer and usually have better luck. Plus I am not a fan of cold weather - 40 to -50 deg C makes it tough to enjoy the fishing, I am definatly more partial to the heat than the cold. :azn:
WW
-
I am definatly more partial to the heat than the cold. :azn:
you have heat up there ???
-
LOL, yeah but sometimes it feels like it's not enough no matter how high you turn it.
My little wood burning stove in the shanty gets quite a work out.
WW

OK, I'm fence sitting. I like them both. There is no choice for that ;D
-
OK, I'm fence sitting. I like them both. There is no choice for that
Flip a coin! That's what I did. 8)
-
OK, it's not a coin flip but ......I choose open water. My wife likes fishing when it is warmer out and she goes with me more often. She is my best friend and I like fishing with my friend.
-
ice is the best you can get more guys on the ice than you can get in the boat, plus you dont need ice for the road sodas.
-
I would have to say that ice fishing is what I perfer but I don't get to do it as much as I would like to. bear
-
ice fishing with out a doubt ;D :rotflol:
-
I spent many a winter day ice fishing. Trudging em down and elbow greasin' my holes with a manual auger. Had a lot of fun doing it.
But hands down open water fishing for me. Summer, winter, spring or fall it doesn't matter. Point the bow east, clear the inlet and go hunting in the atlantic. I don't like having boundrys when I fish. Don't like to see the land. When its water all the way around and nothing to see but a tuna bird here and there I am happy. We've got 450 gallons of fuel on board, enough to carry us up to the canyons off North Jersey or down to the South Carolina border. Somewhere between are the fish. Thats the part I like. Millions of square acres of ocean and your best guess.... Thats the challenge that fires me up!
-

Wow, sounds great. Except for the part where I'm hanging over the edge of the boat chumming! I got sea sick one time on the Cape May (NJ)/Lewes (DE) ferry. Maybe that's why most of my fishing is wading in a river.
-
Ice fishing no question ! Went over 30 times last year Bring on the ice FRED

itsjust a differnet feeling to be on the ice and fishing.

ice fishing with out a doubt :thumbup_smilie: :clapping: 8) ;D
