Title: Pikemaster789's 07 open water adventures pg 6 white everything 7/23
Post by: pikemaster789 on May 01, 2007, 05:18 AM
Well made it out this weekend to my lake and did some fishing for the opener. Went out friday night before the opener in hopes of getting some crappies. Caught about a dozen and only two were worth keeping. My dad got a real nice 12"er. I was also throwing a #1 mepps for craps and caught 3 pike

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy128%2Floserkid789%2F100_1202.jpg&hash=f3d8ca6aefec96436abc3c093e24d840)

a healthy 24" essox

dad and I then got up early to hit the river for the trout opener. It was running high, fast and dirty, but we were going to give it a shot anyway. He got the the first fish on a #1 mepps

7.5"

I then followed with a beautiful brown. I was drifting a hole, had a strike that broke my line clean. Retied drifted the hole again and caught this guy with my other hook in his mouth too! ::). When we cleaned out his belly, he had about 36 earthworms give or take a few. whata fattie

11"

went back to the cottage and did some fishing again. My mom bought a license for the first time in about 10 years ;D so I took her out to teach her to cast and fight fish again. She caught a couple of nice gills, and I put her on some nice bass that sucame to a live minnow. She was suprised when they started peeling line off the ultralight rod and 6lb test. One came in at about 16" and the other 17".

also caught a beauty of a dogfish

nice fish, ever have trouble keeping the dogfish in the boat? lol

actually yes I do, he jumps in all the time, and then cant get back in the boat, but he wont go to the shore, instead he follows the boat around. He is fast as hell too. Ill guide him back to shore with the boat but he takes right off back after the boat as soon as I pull away.

thanks bud, Im trying to get everyone involved instead of just my dad and I. Some casting skills and baiting skills need to be worked on before I wil take them out to cast for fish instead of just still fishing

I will be headed out this weekend to the lake for some pannies, and pike. Ill also be going after some browns and bows because the restraunt that mom wants to go to for mothers day is very close to a secret productive trout stream. There happens to be a shopping area close to it too. That way we can go do our separate things for an hour ;) Pics will be taken.

I followed up with one slightly smaller from the same spot

will be out on lake st clair this weekend with hopefully some good results

fish were caught strictly on live bait. was using worms, daces, stickleback and chubs

We have been out, in fact, a couple of weekends ago, I caught a rockbass that would've given your tourney entry a run for it's money...he was quite the little guy.  Slime got a walleye on Saturday, we did a tourney for the fire dept. in Algonac, but I didn't catch anything but the trolling motor.  I fed a lot of fish though... ;D

haha sounds great. The rockbass never fails. Its good you keep feeding the walleyes, make sure there is some big ones in there for the summer tournament  ;). so lets see you caught a trolling motor and an anchor now?

thanks, they fight so well. Wish there was more of them in my lake. I saw one in there last year that had to be close to 23" and 10lbs. Just wouldnt hit though. Guess that is why he was so big.

Once again i had a great weekend of fishing. Went to a secret spot on saturday for browns and smashed them. No monsters but a lot of keepers. I probably caught 15 fish, and only 5 or so were not legal. All browns and two small bows. Also caught a deformed brown trout that looked like it was a cross with a bluegill. Sunday my dad, uncle, and I went out and action was medium. Did great with the gills and caught some real monsters. They faught awsome. Also had a couple of largemouths thrown in there. Next weekend is the 1 year anniversery of the massive carp run. Hopefully Ill be able to get some monsters. IM still pushing for a carp category in this years online tournament ;)

I had one on the 1st page, but I deleted it to keep room for new incoming pics as I go along. Ive had a big problem with my reel, the one I use to cast for pike. I havnt had a chance to invest in another one yet. Im pretty much strictly worm and minnow on ultralight right now. That is until I get the new reel. I might invest in one this weekend. I also catch a few pike each weekend but their not worth the pics. usually 16-22"

Just kidding with ya, didn't need an explanation. You're like me as you target everything that swims.

Get that new reel soon as May/June is prime pike transition time.

I have stores that have good reels by me, but I have a gift certificate to bass pro. I just havnt made my way to bass pro with gas prices and all. In addition I rather use the gift certificate then pull money out of my pocket.

Ill get you a pike this weekend ;)

Just more of an update. No fishing pictures. Some carp were coming in but didnt get any takers. Cleaned up with a meal of pannies. Bluegills were on the beds and active. Also caught a few bass lingering around in the shallows. Caught several pike but nothing to write home about. Heres one pic of a huge stick pike

Ahhhh, that pic brings me back to my logging days in college.

I dont think they make a lot of money, but what a fun job the original loggers had. Go out cut and haul logs until dark and eat like there is no tmrw. Those guys had a to be some strong people. I always wished I could go back and spend a couple of days with the loggers who used horses, two man saws, and were river rats.
That's ok, in a nother year or 2 the deer will have lots of new growth and raspberry plants to eat.

That is the specific reason the DEQ clear cuts certain areas. They usually do 30-40 acre sections here and there. Young forests "support the most creatures best" when compared to older forests. Deer, rabbit, grouse, woodcock populations should be hopping in there the next 10 years or so. And then it will soon fade off into a middle aged forest which has concurrent young forest and old forest wildlife. The only animals that kind of get pushed out from clear cutting is the bears, cougars, and bobcats. They are more "old forest" animals. Clear cutting doesn't technically kill the trees there either. I know almost all broadleaf tree stumps send out new shoots. The one area by me had poplar shoots growing to 7ft after one summer. After two years its hard to walk through there. The forest floor is then open to sunlight to let new seeds grow also...and eventually pines will come back. And almost all animals like a soft bud on some young trees.

PM I went to college for Natural Resources management. It really helped me manage for wildlife after I graduated.  I like to keep a big raspberry patch growing by my tree stand,. It really attracts the deer.

last summer i was picking berries in a open pasture and i looked next to me and a doe and a fawn were doin the same thing i was ;D

Thats awesome, how close were they? I was picking berries one time on a trail and I jumped up a fairly mature fawn. I froze in my tracks and then ducked. The deer was so curious of what spooked him, he walked back to about 8 yards from me to try and get a look. He just stood there looking around for about 3 mins, then slowly worked his way off into the woods

Just a little update. I havnt really been able to get out fishing because of finishing up school and working everyday. Ill get some good water time in soon. Well I quickly discovered a small drainage ditch creek right next to my work. I also discovered some small carp in there. So when I get off of work, I walk to the creek and fish for 15 mins before it gets dark. Im 3/3 trip to fish ratio. batting 100% not monsters biggest was 20 inches.
Also went out to a trout stream on sunday and got caught out in a thunderstorm but managed two nice browns. I also had a tournament worthy bass take a few smacks at my bait but then he refused. I will get out next weekend for sure. Good Luck yall

Made it out this weekend and did a lot better on the river than I did on the lake. Bows were hitting good, and I probably landed 15 or so trout. Bluegills were just finishing up spawning with not much size to them. I couldn't locate the big ones. Water was very warm.

I warmed up with a few trout on worms and then went to a mepps. First rainbow I had broke my #0 mepps off and 4lb test. I had to switch to a #1 which was just as productive.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy128%2Floserkid789%2F100_1247.jpg&hash=feb8f5e17ac4f90f1c276cf4685d84fc)

I was watching this one in a hole for a while. He kept hitting the surface but would avoid my worm. Eventually I got him to take it.

I then finished my limit off with a beautiful brown. I wish the camera would have caught his color better. It makes him look pretty light.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy128%2Floserkid789%2F100_1250.jpg&hash=04432cd4457c4fc197c06a3317d75604)

Then back at the house we had some active spawning sunfish who I snapped some pictures of. IF you guys get to watch fish spawn up close like this its really neat. The way they lay eggs, the female just takes off and the the male guards against all intruders by flaring his gills out.
yes a little fish porn

Ill be out on a week long vacation starting next Saturday. I have a pretty bad injured ankle and hopefully that wont impair me from getting to some good spots

Nice looking bows and browns Pikemaster. :)

I like the photos of the panfish. It's always neat to see fish in there natural environment.
Man, the panfish males really differ from females in color eh.

definitely, they are very entertaining to watch, guarding the nest and flaring gills. There is a big color difference between sex especially in sunfish and bluegills

Ive thought about it before, but didnt have the right aerator to keep them healthy. There is a bullhead that just started a nest under our dock and should have nice eggs by next weekend, maybe ill snatcha  few. I did that one year but I think they got to warm before they got settled.

Well I have some more pics I have to upload but here are the first few from my week long vacation. I didnt take a ton of pics but there was a lot of nice fish caught. A few 18" LM bass. A couple of nice smallmouth. Monster gills and the panfish were on fire. I really hit the pike the day we had a cold front come through.

firstly we tried out a new 10 acre lake that very few people fish. We found out it has a lot small forage fish, great pike. and many big turtles. The reason it needed exploring was the DNR planted 30,000 walleye this year in this only 10 acre lake. So in 3 or 4 years ill be back for sure with the jigs. We caught a few fish and then fished the near by trout stream with limited sucess and one keeper brown.

a 24" from the new lake

nice pike pm wheres the bass?? u catch alot pike on those stickbaits?

absolutely, that is one of my favorite lures, and a rapala HJ-10 firetiger. you can burn it in or work it slow. it only goes to about 8 feet. I like like to jerk it in. I also use a #5 black fury mepps with a bucktail. Those are my two go to lures for pike.

the bass are a funny story. I fish below a small d**n probably 40 feet. and there is a small trail to the top of the hill and the top of the dam. I ran up the hill to fish the other side and nailed a nice lm bass probable 18". I went back down the hill grabbed my camera and went back. nothing. then went back down. Later I came back up without the camera and nailed another big bass. Went down got the camera came back. nothing. Went down again and later said im coming with the camera. I bring it and get a nice smallmouth. There is a big sea wall I have to lift the fish over and as I was doing that the smallmout fell off and no picture. so I made about 6 trips up and down this steep hill and it was roughly 95 degrees below the dam.

A couple of night later I nailed another 18" lm on my way back to the cottage but my dad didnt feel like taking a pic and it was getting dark. No big deal. Ill get you a bass pic next time im out and about.

Man, that's a very colorful browntrout, I don't think I have ever seen one with that big of red spots on it.  Good looking pike and carp to. 8)

Good shot of you removing the hook from the pike, man you have to be carfull with those toothy guys, one slip and your cut.

I to like to use a firetiger huskyjerk, actually firetiger is a good color in general.

The snake shot is unique one. It has quite a mouthfull with that bullhead.

I was quite shocked when I pulled that brown out too. I was like wow those are the biggest and brightest red spots I have ever seen on a brown. I caught a couple more that resembled that too.

Do you use spreaders on your pike when removing the hook? They work magic.

firetiger rules!

I dont even know if that snake got the bullhead down. I saw one earlier in the year with a bullhead and he was working on it fro 30 mins before he dissapeared. It didnt seem like he was making progress with those spines flailed out

Well time for an update. My friend and I went out to a local lake on Thursday and had limited luck but caught a lot of bass. I didn't take any pictures. Sunday my uncle, my dad, and I went out to lake st Clair. We got started and caught a quick white crappie which led into white bass, and white perch. We also picked up a few sheepsheads, gills, and LM. But the majority of everything was white

It didn't upload all the way and cut off like a white bass and the biggest white perch. Ill try and upload the whole thing later

we started at 7 in the morning and it was quite cold, so I had a long sleeve shirt on and no bathing suit. My stetson hat is up north at the cottage

nice fish how do the white perch taste?

they tasted good. Panfish, whitebass, and white perch all seem to taste the same (good) the way we cook them. Ive never had a bad panfish. We just breadcrumb them, little season salt, and a little miss dash, and bake in the oven.
