Title: Whats working this spring?
Post by: jjf on May 10, 2007, 08:06 PM
Seems like the trout threads have been weak  this spring so I figure I throw a question to all. What have you been having success with this spring for trout (browns, brookies, bows. I'll start by saying that the following three items have been working well in streams:

Dead drifting a trout worm with a split shot about 12 inchs above it.
Pin Minnows, all colors
Panther Martins, gold flasher with black bead

Alright, who is next :P

All of the above, and while fly fishing I have had good luck on san juan worms, pheasant tail nymphs, and buggers.

Is a toronto wobbler the same as a lake clear wobbler ???

No not quite , To wobblers are thicker casting spoons and aren't quite as round.

salted minnows, yellow/silver and black/gold panther martins, yellow/silver rooster tails in streams, small little cleos in small ponds, bigger little cleos and stickbaits (green and silver) on "the big lake"

I'm gonna have to see if I can find some of those Toronto wobblers, I like the looks of them.  ;D

I've had the best luck using brown trout colored f-5 or f-7 rapala for browns on the west canada this year. silver pheobes and yellow/red panther martins w/ silver blades have worked at times too.

In the hands of a skilled user, flies catch more fish. It's just that simple!

Is that post offensive to you? I would gear fish if it was more effective. You can't argue with me. Flies catch more fish. The question was "what's working" FLIES ARE WORKING!

What are you doing man, following me around and trying to pick fights? Just chill out dude.

pgkris....you can't lie to me!
I fly fish...avidly.
I lure fish...avidly.
I bait fish...avidly.
I know what catches bigger and more trout. I'm not saying you can't catch alot of fish on flies. I'm not saying you can't catch big fish on flies. These things are true. But I know the whole truth. ;)

It seems to me like you were the one picking a fight with Mr. Twister. The question was "whats working" LURES work for Mr. Twister and others. You sound like a snob.

You could try to make a post about your preference for flies without sounding like an ass.

Cannt  we all just get along ;D   :afro: Just to help us get back on track with this thread I have got to give another big endorsement to the Yozuri Pin Minnows. What a great lure. I landed an 18 inch brown, my personal best, the first week of the tourney and I couldn't find the camera :pinch:
OK, one more time what has been working for you this season. 8)

Sorry about hijacking your thread jjf. Also sorry to hear you couldn't get a pic of your fish. I'll have to try those lures never seen them before.

Ok heres the deal.  I always start with spinning tackle, panther martins, mepps aglias, small rapalas, and spoons.  I have BADLY outfished flyfisherman using these tacktics.  And not on crappy stocked streams, I'm talkin' famed catskill streams like the Beaverkill, Willowemoc, and neversink rivers.  BUT I always keep a flyrod handy for when trout are selective.  Also I have had times on the neversink where I would throw these lures for about an hour with no hits at all, then I would switch to something like an attractor wet fly, and hook a nice trout on the second drift.  Also when fishing reservoirs the best bait for large trout (for me anyway) is to use minnows on slip sinker rigs.  Lure fishing catches a few trout, but usually arent the monsters you can get with live baitfish.  And when fishing new water it is always better to use spinning tackle because you can cover more water quickly and find the fish.  Then you can switch to live bait, or fly gear.  thank you.   ;D

I have been having luck trolling with weeping willows (copper colored), speedy shiners and streamers. I am an avid flyfisherman and have to state when I am not trolling with hardware I am casting a fly and outfishing most folks once I figure out whats going to work. I use to spin cast only but since I learned how to flyfish I have caught a lot of fish, BIG FISH!!! I suggest wetting a fly if you haven't yet.

myself i like lures or bait but I think its all in the person fishing and their experience with the gear...i go fly fishing with a buddy he catches more and bigger trout than me ...we fish another time with lures i catch bigger and more than him, im sure if we both fished with our prefred gear we'd do about the same. I must admit tho a fish..any fish, on a fly rod is a lot more fun and rewarding than one caught on spinning gear

i have always used tackle mostly trolling and i started flyfishing this year and since i have just started i'm not that good at it but ive caught about the same # and size of fish as with other methods so when i get better at flyfishing i'm sure it will be very effective. and i have to agree that when using a fly rod landing a fish is WAY funner so it's all up to the fisherman what he chooses to land the dream fish. as to the original post i find that a weddingband of any color with a worm is best when trolling and a micro leech fo the fly is what has worked for me so far. and let up on kris hes just a little stuborn thats all
