Title: Has Anyone Had Any Luck Lately?
Post by: black hills tj on Jul 07, 2011, 03:43 PM
As the subject suggests, has anyone caught anything lately?  I haven't been out much, but the few times I have gone out, the fishing has been pretty d**n slow.

I'm just short of being convinced that the two of us are the only ones alive out here, Rich.  Haha

Sounds like S.D. has only 2 fishermen in the whole state!!!! :rotflol: J/K.......... I'm jealous about all the pheasants you guys have........ I get to hear all the stories from my grandpa about growing up as a farmer kid outside Aberdeen................

IceShanty gets some decent traffic, but MFF seems pretty slow... :/

Yeah, Illinois has so many sites that this is not used....... I use this one for Michigan mainly and to check out how the rest of the country is doing......Hoping to make a pheasant trip to SD this fall.....

I was hanging out here for a while, but it was so slow I went back to the Shanty. I posted pics of my catch from last Saturday on the Shanty. Its on the main page. I've been doing well at Sheridan and Deerfield. I usually hang out at Deerfield during the hot months because it seems a little cooler up there. Catching trout and a few perch at each one. More perch at Sheridan, and bigger ones. I go every week, and I have got a limit of trout every time.

been gone for a while myself... partially because its so slow and my old computer can't keep that many windows open at a time!  ::) Haven't been out since the end of July at Angus that had fishing slow as h3ll for walleyes, but Bluegill were everywhere! Caught them trolling even out in 40'!  ???

I have had decent luck fishing Rapid Creek. I caught all but one off of nymphs.

Planned on getting out today but the storm that rolled through last night left me a mess to clean up. Sounds like good odds of very nasty weather all across the state today especially in South Central and South East SD today. Be careful out there this weekend. Good luck but keep an eye on those clouds boys and girls!

been out quite a bit, only on the sh*ttiest of weather at Orman. Not been very kind to me, just a couple slots. Pike on pactola. Haven't targeted trout yet.

If you love Trout, and boy do I, then may I suggest Custer State Park. Any lake. Just pick one. My 5 year old got a very nice 14" rainbow and a nice 12" rainbow at Sylvan. Threw the 12 back but kept the 14 because it got hooked deep. He was using Powerbait. I got half a dozen nice rainbow and one small brown on a Red Copper John nymph. Got all of them in just over a half hour. The weather is amazing, the country is absolutely beautiful. Take a kid, get out and enjoy it!

Did a tournament yesterday at Angustora. Between 3 of us in the boat we only weighed in 2 fish. One was just over 15" and the other was the big fish of the tournament weighing in at 3 1/4 pounds and 19" long. Caught 7 under 15" between the 3 of us. Walleye were slow for everyone this weekend. Smallmouth were biting good though and so were the perch and crappie. Nice weekend to be out, regardless.

Slow Death for Rainbow Trout....who knew? I sure didn't. Took a belated Fathers Day trip up to CSP at Center Lake yesterday and after realizing I left most all of my spinners and trolling stuff in the pick-up, I decided to try some slow death spinners I made. Caught 12 rainbow in about 3 hours. 2 were over 15". Only kept 1 big one that got hooked deep. He was right at 15 1/2". It was beautiful yesterday, love that lake. Hope it's so quiet on the board because everyone is out catching "the wall-hanger".

Nice work! I've not been on a boat at Center, is it electric only, no wake?

Has anyone been catching any fish down at angy??  I am headed there this weekend and have not been there yet this year.

@KingCat- It is no wake. My pops has a little gas motor but we opted to drift with the wind and "troll" that way. Worked pretty well.

@jgouldin- Angie has been slow lately. All the Walleye we caught or that people I know have caught have been under 15". Jigging minnows still seems to be the best. Smallies and Crappie were biting there late last week on jigs. Good luck.

Well went to angy today and had a good day all in all we caught 32 walleyes and kept our 4 person limit average about 17 or 18in with all four overs about 22 also put 2 overs back in the water.  Fished from 7 to 24 feet of water and caught fish at all depths also all day long from 7 to 3.

Angy was very good to us again!!  We caught 30 walleyes only kept 12.  The 12 included 4 overs two that were 25in. (both were not going to live) and  the rest averaged like 17in.  We also released six overs today one that was over 27in and weighed 7lb 5oz and two other 25in.  We focused on shallow water today 6 to 11ft.  I will post a pic of the 27when i get it downloaded.

I really dont know i think really lucky!!  That was the most over 20's i have ever caught in one day.  The only thing i can think of is getting away from the crowds at angy.  Find fish that dont see a million lures or baits a day.  All fish have had empty belly's and hungry.

Nice work, Gouldin.  I'll be camping at Sheridan this weekend, so hopefully between campfire "activities" and skiing, I'll bring in a good sized pike or something cool.

Slow death is a type of hook.  It has some bends in it and the worm kinda spins around.  Works great for pulling behind bouncers.  I know that Mustad makes them. I have heard that they started using them first here on the missouri river and kinda went crazy from there.

Got home early last week from a fire assignment in Colorado and Wyoming. Took my 6 year old out (a.ka. The Bluegill Whisperer) and we hit up Pactola. He caught about 30 fish. Combination of really nice sized Bluegill, medium sized Perch, and some Rock Bass. I caught one 12" Northern on a jointed Storm lure. We only fished a couple hours because it got too hot. Haven't been out in over a week now. Between work, little league getting done, and the weather it just hasn't worked out. Hoping for some cooler evenings to go hit up Pac or maybe even Deerfield to see what happens.

I am heading to the mobrigde area this weekend and was wanting to pull some plugs and have never been there out of a boat so was wondering if anyone has any info for me?  depth? place? flats? trees? points? weeds? or anything.

I have had the best luck finding the fish in the water.  Fish tend to have a hard time breathing if they are up in the trees.  Also, from my experience, the whole lacking legs thing makes it difficult for them to work their way through dandelions.

Well we learned a lot on our trip up to mobridge and have a lot more to learn.  We fished 7 spots and caught fish in all the spots anywhere from 10 feet of water to suspened walleyes over 70 feet of water. All smaller fish biggest was 17 but  lots and lots of pike.  Was a fun trip all and all.

Stockade was a bust today. Mossed in almost everywhere we went. I imagine if a person had a boat they might do better. I'm also convinced that if there are bluegill or perch in a lake, my 6 year old will find them. Only 6 bluegill ("For how old I am, huh Dad?") and one wormy perch. The weather was off and on all day which didn't help. I am now on a losing streak. Since June 19 I haven't caught anything but one little Northern. Need to break my streak soon. I'm the like the Colorado Rockies of fishing right now.

headed up to Roy Lake last weekend for a little vacation. Old stomping grounds. Fished bouncers and slow death, hammered the eyes, one went 32.5 the other 28. Not too shabby. Anyone been to Orman lately? Drove by, she's looking a little sad. I'll probably get out there this weekend and get a closer look - walleyes should be pretty well on top of each other now, eh?  ;D

It was a tale of two days for sure. It was the best of fishing, it was the worst of fishing. So Friday a buddy from work and I took a quick little impromptu run out to New Underwood and fished most of the late morning and early afternoon and caught a bunch of perch and bass between the two of us. A few of the perch were pretty decent. He caught a very nice 15" or 16" Largemouth. I caught a 13" Largemouth on my final cast. Didn't keep anything bu had a great time. Saturday I decided to take my little guy (aka The Bluegill Whisperer) out. We started at Sheridan. This proved to be a mistake. The lake is kind of a mess. No docks along 385, a ton of boats and party-goers on the water and along shore, and not one bite. The boy broke his new fishing rod in half when he got snagged up and was devastated most of the day. We ran down the road to Pactola and didn't even manage a bite there either. Actually, the water level at Pac has gotten kind of low. Hoping with some cooler weather, things pick up a bit. Seems as if it's a little slow for everyone.

i really haven't heard any reports lately, other than trout in the streams up here by Deadwood. i'm thinking things should be picking up soon... or i hope. And then there's always ice fishing  ;D

sorry to hear about the whisperer's rod, hope you got him a new one!
Title: Re: Has Anyone Had Any Luck Lately?
Post by: black hills tj on Aug 24, 2012, 01:05 PM
Bummer on the rod.  I guess that's the only good thing about Scheel's rods...if you spend the cash to afford their million dollar pricetag for what they are, they'll replace them without any questions.  What rod did he have that broke in half when he was snagged?  I've bent rods completely over and none of them have let go yet.  To include...various Ugly Stiks, a Pfleuger rod, a Fenwick, a Scheels brand rod...

What do you mean by no docks along 385 at Sheridan?

The fish are always biting at Sheridan and Pactola...you just have to find them :)  Bigger lakes mean bigger fish, but more room for them to hide.

fished a couple hours yesterday. trolling motor crapped out so just drifted and really didn't pay a lot of attention to fishing. played cards and drank rum. did catch one small fish, sounded like fishing has been decent still. water is pretty low.

@TJ- I have 2 rods for him and I actually bought him Zebco 101's. At $9.99 for the combo, we can afford to break one or two. His feelings were hurt worse than the rod I think. The dock thing: When we were there last the docks along 385 were out of the water and they had the whole lot blocked off. There was a backhoe sitting there and they had orange barrier out in the water. I imagine they were trying to make some kind of improvements. Haven't really gotten out much lately. Used my float tube to fly-fish and got a couple decent and one really nice rainbow at Canyon Lake last week. Yesterday after an ambulance shift I stopped quick and fished Lakota. Perch were all over and feeding quite a bit. I had limited gear and was after a Northern. Got hit once pretty hard but that was it. Didn't have much time. Hot the next few days. Going to wait for a little cool down before I go back out.

Went out Sunday and I'm not sure which was worse: the fishing or the weather. Hit Stockade and never got a single bite. Tried several different presentations and moved all over the lake. After we left we stopped by Lakota to see what was happening there. Nada there either. It was fun hanging out with Dad though, and even though the fishing and the weather was terrible it was still better than what I could have been doing. Going to put the casting stuff "away" for the winter. Unless some very compelling opportunity comes along, I think I'll stick to the fly-rod until hard water shows up.

The "Bluegill Hunter" had himself a good day yesterday. A couple little perch and this pig on a Northland #07 Bro's Mealworm under a slip bobber. He got the big guy all by himself with the exception of me netting it. We turned it loose to maybe catch him through the ice later on.
